PSP firmware 3.00 file system changes |
Ó
This may not be that useful to those of you who don't understand all the techno mumbo-jumbo, but with developers hard at work on firmware 3.00, with a version of Psardumper for 3.00 being released today you can rest assured that if any progress is made in decrypting the elusive firmware, it'll be here on PSPUpdates first. In the meantime, we'll leave you with a few screenshots of 3.00 from 0okm. Remember, if you do upgrade to 3.00 you won't be able to run any homebrew applications!
Thanks for the tip Jordan!

This is prittey cool.
WTH does that mean? does it mean that we cant connect it to the pc anymore?
It means the File System has changed.. You can still connect to your PC as normal... They probably changed to FAT or FAT16, which are both supported by Windows.
I think it means that the internal flash memory now uses a different file system. The memory stick will remain the same. So no difference for the user. Only this is probably trouble for developers becasue they have to understand a new file system before being able to write to flash0 safely.
does this mean that fat and fat32 wont be recognized anymore, even if we format the mem stick on the pc?
the flash's file system has been changed, not the me stick small little annoyance, a sad attempt to ward off hackers, or maybe done to make something else work better? whats that certificate utlity thing?
so if it dosent use FAT does is use NTFS? cuz if it does they may be releasing a 4gig+ Memory sick, because NTFS is better with GIGs :) but im probaly wrong :(
there is a 32 mb internal flash memory where all the firmware files (1.5, 2.0, 2.8 etc...) are kept, and the file system (way its stored) has been changed. just like how you can change the file system of a hard drive (fat16, fat32, NTFS), sony has changed their internal flash format to something else most likely in an attempt to ward off hackers by making them more difficult to be read by conventional means (all previous internal flash have been fat32)
Please remember to read the full article instead of skimming. It does say that the flash0 doesn't use Fat32 anymore, meaning the PSP's on board flash memory. This does not effect the memory stick or connecting your PSP to a PC in any way.
0okm's original statement was, that he could not find a FAT12 identifier. Although most people and the QJ bloggers might not know, there is more than just FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS. Discussion is running if it might be kind-of encrypted.
it might use PFS like the original PS2 does... not sure if PS3 uses it
Could it possibly be a linux file system?
check fedora core 5 linux ps3 on google u ll see :)
When I initially read the headline I thought, so we will finally be able to use 8GB+ sticks huh. But nobody talked about this. I am guessing this lets us use bigger memory sticks, and possibly need to reformat large sticks or somthing? 8GB Mem stick pro duo would sure be nice! oh my!
wow how can people be that dumb.... its been almost 2 years since the psp came out and still people in the homebrew community don't know the simplest of stuff cause they don't read thoroughly. waste of time damn noob asses
this update is the first step to psp indpendence. 3.0 is the best thing that ever happen to psp keep it up sony i love my psp
Dude, 3.0 Can suck my balls ( And Homebrews ).
The PSP uses internal(flash0) and external(memory stick) memory to store things. Things relating to the system are saved to internal flash. External flash(the Memory stick/card) is used for game saves, movies, music, etc. Only the internal flash file system was changed. BTW, here is a list of file systems: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_file_systems
This is interesting...
Raphael is right. 0okm told about FAT12... not FAT32. This explains what a noob some QJ-editors are (probably not all). Do they actually understand what 0okm is talking about? FAT12 has a limit to 4 GB. This change is interesting because it might allow us to use large memory sticks or external harddisks. This is just guessing since we do not know yet what the new filesystem is. Nobody is talking about a reformatted memorystick so FAT12 is still supported (otherwise it wouldn't be backwards compatible).
Way off base.
amos, a ver, vosotros sois tonto o que? no sabeis leer o que? mira que esta claro que hablan de la flash, pues nada, vosotros dando por culo con la memory stick, sin duda, sois mu tontos.
go make me a taco and jump a border
make me read the whole article
Actually the filesystem of the flash doesn't have anything to do at all with the Memory Stick filesystem. 2.80 brought support to bigger memory sticks (AND the flash filesystem was still the same), so it propably has a FAT32 driver for ms0 access. Maximum partition size for FAT12 is 32 MB, FAT16's maximum is 2 GB (or 4GB in some implementations). FAT16 is mostly used in mobile devices, except for e.g. MP3 players with hard drives.
He can speak spanish if he wants to.
where's the ball sucking feature? Couldnt find it under Game.
before you open your mouth please have a clue as to what you are talking about. NTFS is a journaled file system, and wouldnt work worth a damn on an embedded device... As well the overhead on it is massive.
every single guy who has posted have not got a clue what they are on about. If you want to read true (not boring) info check the qj.net staff and developer posts. All these other guys are just idiots! all ya'll
i dont have a psp but i just want to know how do u update ur psp,how do you download the update or what ever
Oops, yes MaTiAz, I reacted a bit too fast ;) Thanks for correcting me. But still... the article 0okm wrote did not reveal anything about FAT32.
tthere is a feature on the psp so when u select it it will connect to the internet and check for updates. if there is it will tell you and ask you to have enough space on your mem stick to download it. once it is downloaded you can choose to run it after you download it or update the psp later. if later, you go to the game section and select it. it is in a eboot.pbp form. hope that helps. besides you should get one while you have a chance otherwise you wont be able to have homebrew. i own both NDS and PSP and i think psp is WAY better.
how stupid did i get, i upgraded from 2.82 to 3.01 now i learnt that someone called by the name of dark alex has almost unecptypted sonys firmware so that possibly means that hes almost made a downgrader from 2.82 to 1.50!! why did i upgrade to 3.01 now i cant down grade till some brainy guy comes.
all i want is to play downloaded ISO's on my psp. firmware 3.01+
PSP does'nt use FAT12 filesystem, it uses FAT16 or rather a custom Sony version of Fat16. Partition size is'nt limited, so Sony can make the size anything they want, which they did for FW2.80, raising it from recognising 4gig to 8gig. Only the file size is limited to 2gig, which is perfectly fine for any UMD game as a UMD only holds 1.8gig and there is always more than 1 file on a UMD. he only problems people will face with 4gig and 8gig sticks is if you have a single movie file which exceeds 2gig.
