PSP Firmware 2.80: Video Tips and Tricks |

- Videos in the "VIDEO" directory can have any naming you want ! (no more MAQ*.mp4 naming required !!). However, the title of the video that appears on the PSP is now based on the file name and not on the information inside the file anymore and the thumbnail (.thm file) didn't work anymore in the "VIDEO" directory.
- Atomchanger is not required anymore! I've been able to create valid files using only megui and avisynth. I've tested with 2 videos (25fps 320x240 with 48kHz sound and 25fps 368x208 with 44kHz sound) and they both worked fine.
- The PSP seems to do a check on the reported Profile/Level. I've found that "Main Profile - Level 2.1" and "Baseline Profile - Level 1.3" worked but I haven't had any success with anything else. By example, "Main Profile - Level 1.3", "Baseline Profile - Level 2.1" or "Main Profile - Unrestricted Level" didn't work....I've done some further testing and it seems some cases that didn't work were because of a problem in my x264 settings at the time of the test. Actually, for the Main Profile, any level set <= 2.1 seems to work. I've tried exactly the same settings (PD-PSP profile from megui) with level set a 1.3, 2, 2.1, 2.2 and Unrestricted. Files with level set at 1.3, 2 and 2.1 worked.
-The PSP videos that can be downloaded from "Google Video" website reports a level of 5.1 and are rejected by the PSP.
-I suspect videos encoded using PSPVideo9 are affected by the same problem and can't play in the "VIDEO" folder. - Video Encoding for the PSP is now much easier than it has ever been...Standard encoding tools can be used. By example megui (using x264 neroaacenc mp4box) avisynth can be used and gives really great results.
-Files with .m4v extension works. It seems that files can use either .mp4 or m4v extension.
Ghim was able to download some movie trailers encoded for the iPod from the QuickTime website. According to him, he renamed his downloads to .mp4 and copied them to his PSP. "They played fine" according to him. He also tried to keep the original .m4v extension and they worked as well. He was able to play the "Ratatouille" Teaser (320x132 AVC @ 23.976fps Video, 44100kHz AAC Audio) and the "A Scanner Darkly" Trailer (320x172 AVC @ 24.000fps Video, 44100kHz AAC Audio). Most likely, Sony implemented this feature to use the PSP to use "already existing video podcasts."
Take note that these are only his personal findings and if someone could confirm them, it would be good. Two heads are better than one, as they say. So you're on your own if you try it out. To get the videos to work in the Video folder did you place them in the folder the a podcast creates? Becuase I've tried both and they don't seem to work either way. Explain further please.

all this stuff confuses me. I've had my psp for almost a year and I still dont have a clue what E-loader is, devhok , and many more things. all i know is that filmware updates are my new enemy. I'm stickin with 2.71 untill They get a new downgrader.

You can have pictures/folders in /PICTURE with the exact same filenames as those in /PSP/PHOTO, and the PSP will still know which are which.

I feel bad for people who still have no idea what homebrew is. Its not even that hard to figure it out. You actually have to be semi-retarded not to understand it. Its mostly drag and drop. I keep meeting people with psps that are 2.6+ or whatever and they had no idea what theyre psp is capable of. Having homebrew opens up totally new horizons to our device and Sony's attempts to thwart our efforts are only going to work on idiots who had no clue what homebrew was in the first place.

2.8 was made to support video podcasts (which are downloaded to the root:/VIDEO folder on your PSP). Videos in this folder should NOT be encoded with PSP Video 9, or they will not work. These video podcasts were encoded for video iPods, and do not require special MP4 header data.
Ill try this stuff if 2.80 devhook comes out.

is all you sony bashers, just because they want to update THERE hardware to stop you guys using isos ( oh and dont say i use it purely for homebrew apps, total bull***** and u know it)
but most of all , take a step back a minute and actually get yer heads out yer arses and realsie without sony you would have NO machine be it 1.5 or 2.8 to play with at all, so hows about some respect here.
If you still want to keep your videos un-organised, you can use the M4V#####.mp4 type names. But if you want to watch videos that've been converted for iPod OR want to keep videos in folders then get yourself an iPod video converter and put all the files into the H:/VIDEO/ folder (where H: equals your PSP drive).
how is it easier than ever if it rejects a bunch of videos and wont use the thumbnails anymore? I am fine using pspvideo9, its easy and great quality, very user freidnsly gui too adn free. Theres no use for other apps anyway.

Ok if sony so great a corporation why dont they let us play full res video for psp. I say the people who come out these updates are idiot. Look at the homebrew developer coming great things like radio, pmp(full resolution video), and ya tetris(i like playing tetris on my psp), other great games and application. So can 2.8 do that huh can they?

I have to agree with you. What's with Sony not supporting the full 480x272 resolution for videos? It's not like UMDs don't. I mean, that's the only way I might even CONSIDER... no, EVEN THINK ABOUT upgrading. Oh yeah... and PSP Video 9? It's so slow... I recommend everyone going to PQDVD.com to download 'PSP Video Express'. Yeah, it's free, and it encodes at a very fast speed.
How would Sony enable radio reception without the need to purchase an accessory when the PSP does not have the requisite hardware to support such a function?

Some of us really dont care much for homebrew. I've done it with my Dreamcast and Xbox and its cool for awhile but it's not for everyone. Stop flaming the upgading type

The only reason why they do the updates is because of iso's and emulators. If those things didn't happen sony would care less if you use it as a remote. Stupid people have to always F^CK up everything
I have a modded XBOX and stuff, but I upgrade my PSP because I know that until Sony decides to make a firmware that allows regular homebrew and blocks out kernel mode I can run all the homebrew I want and not risk bricking my PSP. If Sony never gets around to that, big deal, in the next few years prices will be dropping on portable devices meant to run 3rd party software, so I'll have something like that with all the capabilities of homebrew on the PSP, but probably easier to use.
Until then, I'll continue my mission to get live streaming audio to work in RSS. IceCast and Darkice with the lame encoder works for a few seconds at a time, so I know that's off topic but someone here should find that find interesting. Just stream to IP:PORT/FILE.MP3 and load it into an XML file for the RSS Channel

well it seems update 2.81 just arrived. Sony must be slipping. It is now possible to use the psp as a deathray emitter. They said " We release this to our faithful updaters, as a cry for help. Upon update your psp will give you detailed instructions on how to catch a homebrewer. It will then be up to you to eliminate them. We thank you for your assistance. You can STILL use Google Videos , just just cant put them in the new "Video" Folder on the PSP's root menu.
You have to put them in the old folder you always used.

i think there are a couple of programs that can downgrade psp ver. 2.5 or 2.6 but i thinkits really risky u could brick it or most likely

Have non of you people ever heard of IRC or what? If your going to sit here and bicker and ***** about what firmware is better and why, then why don't you take it to IRC and quit spamming up the comments section.
And seriously, anyone who says any firmware besides 1.5 is better is ignorant, because you obviously have no idea what firmware 1.5 is capable of.
I'm going to give the end all be all answer to shut you all the hell up. If you own a PSP with firmware 1.5, you can go easily download a copy of Devhook .46 Full, and slap a few mods on it like screen capture and reboot to 1.5 and non of it needs to be written to flash. Devhook basically kicks the ass of any other firmware besides 2.8 at this point because of the ability to run anything PSP related at 333mhz, including Web Surfing. That feature alone is enough to make people downgrade, simply because it ends lag in games, and it gets wifi going like 30% faster.
Then, you can hop on the homebrew train and get some kick ass ports such as: Doom 1&2, along with a *****load of .WAD's. Quake. Basically every video game system under the sun at this point as an emulator, including all the roms for them. I personally like having Snes so I can play Super Mario World mods. Also, another good one is Daedalus, the N64 emulator, which is just kicking ass and taking names. And in the near future, PSP One. There's a *****load more stuff I could say here, but I can't think of anything else offhand that would go here and I don't care to go search for more.
There's also a rediculous amount of homebrew that's made from scratch, and the list is much too long to list here. One of my recent favorites is ThrottleX, an fun puzzle racer thats in 3D.
That pretty much sums it up in my opinion, I honestly don't think I even need to point out any features that other firmwares would have that I don't, seeing as how there aren't any at all, besides the extra crap from 2.8.
I'm perfectly capable of ripping DVD's, converting, and compressing them myself and slapping them on a psp, so I don't really need a retard proof "Video" file either.
Anyone who can't do any of this stuff just shouldn't have a PSP because they're too retarded for the technology they're in possession of.

yea...well if I changed my psp to 2.81, there is no way I can change it back to 1.50? cause it sucks not being able to play roms and stuff on my psp.....
