SCEE has sent 'round some news regarding the release of firmware 1.80 for their next gen PS3 video game console. Two of the notable new features in this firmware update are PSOne/PS2/DVD upscaling and Remote Play for the PSP handheld system.

PS3 - Image 1

Version 1.80 can now upscale PlayStation and PS2 games as well as DVD movies up to full 1080p HD resolution when viewed on a compatible HD TV set. This upscaling capability is normally associated with top range DVD players, and now PS3 owners can enjoy their games and movies in 1080p HD.

The newest firmware also allows users to enjoy Remote Play on their PSP across the internet. Please note that this requires a PSP that has firmware 3.50, which will be available at the end of this month. Version 1.80 also allows users on a home network to view and play media content stored on DLNA3-enabled devices (PCs, laptops) on their PS3.

Other enhancements include the ability to print photo images stored on the PS3's hard drive or on inserted storage media on a variety of Epson printers. PS3 owners can start upgrading to firmware version 1.80 on May 24.

» firmware 2.0

By Toby Bialas on May 14, 2007

There's been a whole bunch of buzz about this today. The initial post at The Official Playstation Forums around page 208. A veteran poster revealed some insightful info about the supposed new update for PS3 (details below). After plenty of hype and speculation, the poster came back to say her account was supposedly hacked and she is sorry for any inconviences that may have been caused.

But the news has spread far and wide, apparently already to Attack of the Show on G4 just a while ago. So it still remains unknown if Firmware 2.00 is actually near and includes all of this cool stuff or not. Gamers Day is this week, and more than likely Sony will announce anything new there, so we'll keep you updated.

this update might not be global. just looking at the US PS Forums and other sites and they think US and JAP wont be getting this update coz of the EE chips and how it wasnt meant to handle 1080p upscaling, while the software emulation can be changed to handle anything. only time will tell

by Blade - 2007-05-23 05:49
» Its been confirmed to be world wide.

Over at NeoGaf an insider confirmed its worldwide including scaling. It may affect the BC on the US/Jap versions tho since it will most likely switch to emulation. Maybe the EE will be deactivated. Honestly the Euro BC list isn't to bad and to have upscaling it may be worth letting go of a few games for awhile.

by Extinction - 2007-05-23 06:32

Hardware emulation does not forbid upscaling.

It's a post processing affect, mewaning once the PS2 hardware renders a frame, the PS3 hardware takes it, upscales it, shows it. With no change in emulation

I'm not a PS3 fanboy or anything, and I own a 360 elite. But I always loved the ps2 and it's games. Every time there was a new accessory (Headset, slim ps2, wireless controller, multitap, HD Component Cables) I got them. I actually think I will get a PS3 JUST BECAUSE I can play my old games in 1080p. I would pay 600$ just for that. I never thought PS3 would ever mean anything to me.... » What about 720p output for Bluray

I just spent freekin over $3k on a new 1080p TV because I was sick of Bluray movies not being able to be played at 720p on my old tv.

Is this going to save some peoples butts and allow them to watch Bluray's at 720p? Else it is 1080i or 480p which sucks a donkey kong nob imo.

Seems like now the scaler could do that, hopefully they implement it so 720p TV owners can enjoy High Def from their Blurays.

Also, they always say remote play for psp but what exactly does it do, there has been a form of remote play for a few fw versions now.... Can you actually play ps3 games with your psp yet or is it still just music or movies access... If so they should call it remote "watch" or remote "listen" cuz you not be playin nuthing doods.

The cell is capable of post-processing any video that it can play. Go to AVSForum and read up about HTPC's. It's amazing what a few filters can do to a video with a capable processor. The cell is more that stout enough to upscale/sharpen/denoise etc...

i stands for interlaced which means that the screen uses every other horizontal line of pixels on the screen. p stands for progressive which means that every pixel on the screen is being used. So 1080p is better then 1080i.

» Will it...

So it'll upscale DVD's and games to 1080p, but will it also upscale to 720p for the rest of us?

by Folding Junkie! - 2007-05-23 10:59
» 1080i vs. 1080p

1920x1080i uses every line just not all at the same time. What this means is that when the screen is drawn it draws 1920 pixels for lines 1,3,5,7, etc... then in the NEXT draw cycle it draws 1920 pixels for lines 2,4,6,7, etc...

1920x1080p draws 1920 pixels for line 1 then does the same for lines 2,3,4,5 etc... all in the SAME draw cycle.

A little math for reference:

1280x720p + 1280*720 + 921,600 pixels/draw 1920x1080i + 1920*1080/2 + 1,036,800 pixels/draw

1920x1080p + 1920*1080 + 2,076,300 pixels/draw

In summary the difference between 720p and 1080i is negligible at best. With high motion, such as sporting events or anything with quick camera pans, the 720p is actually far superior and some people have sensitive enough eyes to pick up the flicker of an interlaced signal making the 720p signal their preferred choice. 1080p however is overwhelmingly superior resulting in a superior resolution with flicker-free and simply stunning performance.

» This update is far better!

In game XMB access? Wallpapers? Do you sit and stare at your XMB? Why in the world would you want that instead of scaling abilities for video and BC games. That is for a future update!

While waiting for some blockbuster PS3 games to hit the shelves I am extremely glad that Sony is doing something for it's multimedia capabilities. Contrary to what the dotes who hang out here bashing Sony have to say I bought my system for it's innovation and forward thinking design. This might even help them sell more consoles, rapidly increasing the rate at which those blockbusters do hit the shelves.

I am talking about innovation in a different way than the gimmicky Wii. I am not saying there is anything wrong with the Wii. Quite the opposite! It may well save a bunch of obese children and keep many senior citizens bones strong and healthy. I really don't know! I think after a while the aura will go away, though. It is another unique and innovative system just not a next generation one. That is the reason for it's low price and rapid sales. I don't care if it outsells the PS3 until the end of time, it caters to a different crowd. Someday it may even be cheap enough that PS3 owners may not mind sharing some space with it. Until then we will have to wait and see.

On the other hand with the PS3 we have a true next generation system capable of stunning next generation graphics in games and jaw dropping videos due to it's BD capabilities. We also have an upscaling DVD player now too!

In my opinion the people Sony are well aware of what they are doing and I am willing to wait patiently while their plan unfolds. In the meantime updates like this one will keep me a happy PS3 buyer.

» Multiple PSPs?

Is it possible to use Remote Play with multiple PSPs on one connection? I wonder if it would be possible to play multiplayer or access the PS3 XMB with more than 1 PSP.

Your DVD's will not be in 1080p they will only be scaled to that from a 720x480 source. Only BD goes from the disc to your screen in pristine 1080p quality all the way.

by Folding Junkie! - 2007-05-23 12:16
» I am not sure...

.... but I think that is probably a safe assumption. It will most likely depend on what you set for your TV's acceptable resolutions in your XMB.

Figure it out somewhere else! If I wanted to help people with PSP problems I would be somewhere else. If I wanted to help you pirate games then I would be an enabler. What I am really saying is I could help you, but then I would have to sue you.

Pirates are bad enough but noob pirates are even worse! I do know how to help you, believe me I do. I just won't! If you had lied and said it was yours I still wouldn't have believed you, but I might have directed you to help. You blatantly admit your theft, though.

I am sure that this rant didn't deter you so do yourself a favor and start learning things on your own. Self Study! It's a great skill to have and will help you all the way through your life. Having research skills is an awesome alternative to becoming a dumb***.

» Advantage?

Depends on your opinion, I guess. I don't normally mind the music chosen by the developers. In most games I want to be able to clearly hear the sound effects also.

I also have a very nice 5.1 PC sound system with many more songs on its HDD than my PS3 has. If I want to listen to my music while gaming it suits the job just fine.

This is good news for once. Old games wont look much better in 1080P, less jaggies maybe, but the textures will still be super low res.

I do think upscaling movies to 1080 is a good idea they should implement on the 360.

This news wont sell a single PS3.

by Folding Junkie! - 2007-05-23 13:16
» So negative!

Are you positive about that? That announcement by itself most likely won't but it is the fact that with every update the PS3 increases it's cumulative worth. This machine is so much more than just a gaming rig. Far too many people can't see that!

Now that thats out of the way. They had in game xmb access in a old video I seen and we need it because we still have to exit our game when someone send us a message is dumb. And how is printing pictures from the ps3 more important then setting a wallpaper. I know some of you fanboys sucking sony's d*ck and get all offended when I say something that most ppl could agree with but look around.........why are we waiting for this simple task and not give us the ability to set wallpapers from the start. Do you see the custom wallpapers that ppl made for the psp? There awesome and I bet 90% of you have your own wallpaper and im just saying it makes no sense why this wasn't added out of the box even though it will be in the future. Now before you cry baby's start whining why don't you go play a xbox 360 and start sucking Microsoft's d*ck because you might have something thats worth arguing about. yes i do stare at my xmb because theres no games to play and thanks to sony I can play ps1 games in 1080p and print out pictures of your mom naked because i paid 600 dollars to do that...Now start crying

Why post this when nobody bought the PS3 (well maybe the guys who bought the N-Gage)? Anyways so now PS3 gets video upscaling, my 360 has it already since launch, this really shows the only worth consoles to buy are the 360 and PSP (but still the best games are pc games).

» I...

I agree with joke, nothing good added to the ps3 and the xbox360 still has more features and even though sony prmised lots of crap my 360 has better graphics (ingame, not cutscenes) than my friend's ps3. In addition 360 online is better cause it doesn't lag and all my friends play xbox Live (in fact, even Phill Harrison of Sony America couldn't answer a simple question "what about ps3's online future? how will it compete with Xbox Live?", he was for over 10 seconds saying "uhh" and then he said he had no comment on that! For christ sake the PS3 sales show the PS3 is a lame duck, why would I buy a console that will fail in a few years and turn out to be a Gamecube? The Ps3, being in most areas inferior to the 360 and costing 200 dollars more thinks it can just rely on the Playstation name to succeed? The only good thing about the PS3 is blu-ray but that is still not enough to sell an overpriced bulky piece of junk, now blu ray players are expensive but in a year or 2 they will lower to less than 200 dollars, just like the DVD players, and who needs a blu ray now when few blu ray DVDs are available and even VHS movies are still rarely found at rental stores (blockbuster only but still, like * years after DVDs arrived).

1) CAPS are like walking into a room and SHOUTING! Nobody likes it and it makes you look like a fool.

2) You are not the only one. True but why worry about that before truly useful things.

3) Nobody has posted claiming that the printing feature was useful. Go through from the beginning and actually read what we are talking about this time.

4) Screw the numbers I will be in double digits soon. Good point about the PSP wallpapers, many people have made them and some are pretty cool. What you failed to mention is that the PSP was originally shipped without wallpaper support either. It also was packaged in a firmware update.

Finally we have the comments about someone's mom. Wow, that one is really original. I don't know who you are posting to with that one and I don't really care. Go whine somewhere else!

» Location Free Player

Please correct me if Im wrong, but before the Location Free Player was only accesible through a closed wireless network, aka. on the same wireless router. Now, you can access the content on your PS3, from your PSP, while you are vacationing, oh lets say, across the Atlantic!

This firmware update is good, but will be great paired with the PSP firmware update, and subsequent custom firmware from D.A.

Really, imagine this: Setting up a download queue for movie trailers from PSNetwork on your PS3, leaving for class, being bored in class and accessing your PS3 with the PSP Location Free Player, watching freshly downloaded movie trailers in class. We live in a ***** great period of human history. Cheers.

Is there a ready decrypted 1.8 ps3 firmware? What kind of files does it use in the flash memory (prx for psp im assuming the same for ps3)? how big is the flash memory? And... psp use firmware 1.5 as the standard firmware for homebrew. What is it for ps3?

That's the best firmware update yet. PS3 and PSP's functionality are ever-improving. Where are the haters now?

Now there's no need to buy a high-end DVD player or BR player. For all its features and technology, PS3 completely justifies its price. I just gotta wait for my favourite games. =)

This is only my opinion though and you are free to have a different one. As a matter of fact you may prefer 1080i more Please don't let me influence your decision I just wanted to explain the differences to you.

This much I can tell you! My TV is flickery in 1080i. This may be inherent to my set but I don't think so. I just don't like an interlaced signal on any digital set.
