Next PSP Firmware Date? GPS? Maps?

It seems April 20th is going to be an anticipated date for PSP fanatics. Sony seems to have pushed back the release of the white PSP from the 12th to the 20th. When asked why, they said, "... for undisclosed reasons..." In the article, there's a supposed leaked Japanese commercial showing off the PSP with some GPS software, but the funny part is there's no adapter in sight. Could this be the built in GPS functionality Sony mentioned last month?

The GPS functionality was supposed to be released in October of this year, not April. Also, at the end of the commercial, we see the date again, April 20th. Sony mentioned that future PSPs were supposed to support these new map libraries, could this update be it? Who knows, only time will tell.

This story sucks? This story rocks!

home brew is the best i will not give it up for anything $ony try to offer. only if the psp load game faster from umd then i will update my system. so until then i will stick with loading off my 2GB MS. plus if i want a GPS system for my car i would get it already. I survive without one till now so I'll manage to live without it a little longer.

GPS catches my eye big time. I know I can speak for all homebrewers and say, "Is it worth it?" Despite the new functionalities that will arise from the upcoming firmware, I'm unsure if I'm still interested in keeping my homebrew. It's not impossible to crack something right? I sure hope so =D

Notice the price? Or what at least looks like the price? Just under 4,000 something which is probably Yen. 4,000 Yen is about $30. That price sounds like the price of some UMD software to me.

uhhm i dont think so to use wifi u have to be near an access point and i doubt if u get lost somewhere in some desert or woods that there will be a wifi access point

Sony is all set to launch Map software for the Sony PSP on April 20th in Japan. Sony has partnered with Japanese map data provider “Zenrin” for the PSP Map application called “Minna no Chizu”. The Map software comes on a UMD and features map data for the whole of Japan.

Sony PSP Map application does not come with a GPS receiver and is mainly like Microsoft’s MapPoint for Windows.

PSP Map program has 360 degrees revolution ability for the city maps and can be used to find places of interests like restaurants, shops etc. You can search for addresses, add places to favorites and add comments. Those comments and favorite places can also be exchanged via Wi-Fi with other Sony PSP users.

Sony Style will also sell additional contents called “Guide Information” to be used with the PSP Map software. These additional contents will cost around 105 yen each. The data would be downloaded onto the user’s Memory Stick.

If there is no GPS hardware included or sold as an addon, then cleary this does not turn your PSP into a gps map unit.

Its merely an electronic version of a regular map.

Just because the libraries are added in the next firmware update doesn't mean there will be functionality.. That comes later when the hardware is released. GPS/Camera ect.

Allright I'm gone. Just canceled my google->pspupdates subscription. :/

I hate this site because newsposts are too often mixed with idiotic rumours the posters make up themselves because they are totally uninformed.

This software set to release on 20th april is merely a map-guide software WITHOUT GPS (AS ANNOUNCED) and only with maps of TOKIO included. So this is 100% useless for all of you.

GPS will probably be released much later in this year.

the real umd games are just better in the long run.

Homebrew is what's keeping me from getting rid of my psp.

I've liked seldom few umd games, only about 6 to date.

All the people commenting here all have 2.01 or higher, and can't use the best of the homebrews. :/

If you have a 1.5, homebrew is the best thing out there, official games can't even compare. Snes runs at 90% speed on 1.5, so shove it up your ass homebrew/snes haters.

-420, an amusing date because stoners all over the country (The US) will be toking up on this day. Historically, you'll smell more weed in the air than any other day of the year.

-GPS, As we all know, video proof is often unreliable. That doesn't necessarily mean that it's wrong. Wait four days, stop complaining, and see if the update really does come on the twentieth.

-1.5 users, BUY ANOTHER PSP. Don't care how you do it, just do it. 1.5s are becoming extinct, and you can't let their legacy die. In several years, when there's firmware 20.01, you may be sitting on a fortune in your left pocket.
