The following is an interesting PlayStation Portable OS development (read: firmware) update found by QJ.NET reader and forum member Robin123 over at the official PlayStation online site for Asia. It mostly revolves around PSOne classic Biohazard Director's Cut having a problem running on the PSP with official firmware 3.52.Here's the official statement found on the said site:
If you are using PSP with OS version 3.52 to play PlayStation classic game Biohazard Director's Cut (CAPCOM) which is purchased at Playstation Store, there might be malfunction happening in the ORIGINAL, BEGINNER, and ARRANGE modes.
The malfunction is expected to be fixed in the next PSP OS Update (tentatively scheduled in the beginning of September). The game is running properly on PlayStation 3. We apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused.
Please kindly be advised to update your PSP to the latest version once the next software update is available.
Hmm, coincidentally the slimmer and lighter PSPs are also expected to arrive this September. As Robin123 pointed out, it feels like our beloved homebrew developers will be busy once again.

Or.. as you point out, the current PSP's can also use 3.60, but maybe with just the TV-Out options disabled or something.

And yes, a "new firmware coming in september" is pretty much a non-story since we've known since E3 that the PSP 2000 was running on 3.60.
