More bad news for PSP custom firmware users. Apparently, the upcoming Gran Turismo PSP will require you to have the latest firmware 6.00 installed before playing the game.

According to reports from TheSixthAxis, SCEA has given some lucky websites
a voucher code of the game for them to review. The download weighs approximately 937MB and requires the latest PSP firmware 6.00 installed. Now this is not really a surprising move from Sony since most of their latest PSP releases required a mandatory installation of firmware 5.55 that came along with the UMD.

Gran Turismo PSP will be released October 1
.

NEED DAX

OMG! we need CFW6.00 or 6.00GEN before Oct.1st
by Colak - 2009-09-13 18:30:21
Save us Super-Alex !!!

Ohhhhhh my god whyyyyyy! I been waiting to play this for months. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Sony is coming for us all. Run for your lives. Argghhhh.......
by darckcast - 2009-09-13 18:33:06
fade to black.

the CFW era is near to the end
by ryebee - 2009-09-13 18:41:53
CTF?

meh... I think you mean CFW. +/
by Foolmonkey - 2009-09-13 18:42:17
Of Course.

The game has been in development since launch and is one of the most highly anticipated games to ever come out on PSP. Sony's gonna try and protect this title as much as they can.
by Aces In The Palm - 2009-09-13 18:55:43
its really quite simple

provided you dont have psp go,ta-088v3 or ta-090v2. get yourself despertar del cementerio v8 set up MMS and pandora (use time machine IPL so you can boot normal) now install 6.00 OFW onto your psp. whenever you want to play UMDs or psn downloads that require 6.00 you boot psp as normal. if you want to play brew, hold L shoulder button while booting PSP to start despertar del cementerio, goto test 5.00m33. it will run 5.00m33 from the memstick, meaning you affectively have both 6.00 and 5.00m33 installed. remember pandora works on ANY firmware.
by hush404 - 2009-09-13 19:01:26
Yeah

I personally wouldn't mind. I pay for my games. Hope Sony continues to still the pirate community with more and more measures, making more difficult for them to have an easy time at getting games. I think Sony's initiative to pump up their PSstore with useful PSP apps is to offer a completely legit way of using some of your fav "homebrew" apps without CFWing your system is a step in the right direction. Because anyone who says they use CFW for "Only legit homebrew" is a f***ing liar, they're all pirating. Even if Sony just continually pumped out new OFW with little tweaks that required entire new written CFW to crack... then I see a huge stick being put in the pirating community.
by midnite1 - 2009-09-13 19:26:44
hmm

people will eventually find a loop hole around this
by puddingman - 2009-09-13 20:37:48
No!!!!!!!!!!

Damn You SONY! you can't stop us!
by FelisCatusLover - 2009-09-13 21:07:42
Typo

lol bad new.
by Genotype - 2009-09-13 21:24:39
...

Why are we getting these updates that new games will require the new firmware? It seems obvious. I buy my games legally, so I don't mind, but Sony could save themselves some trouble and try yo cater towards the firm-ware crowd and try to fight piracy other ways. It would, admittedly, mean more time and money for them though.
by Icy - 2009-09-13 21:40:30
White Knight alert.

Looks like hush is a little butthurt because he didn't make wise decisions upon buying his psp. I have cfw. I use legit homebrew. I also pirate games. What's there to hide? Piracy is a good thing, comrades. It brings the Internet closer together.

...

edited, thanks for the heads up!
by gunblade15zx - 2009-09-13 22:10:12
Wow why didn't I think of that

Actually that is pretty smart right there and if you run from memstick is there like any drawbacks to running 5.00 m33 from the memstick because I would still like to play my PS1 games
by icestrom - 2009-09-13 22:27:28
lol

true hush, there are way more pirates than non pirates, and look how ths psp sells way more than the Wii/PS3/360 yet even the best games of psp have nowhere near as many sales, cause all the noobs are pirating it instead of buying.
by b|ank Crossfire - 2009-09-13 23:16:07
hmm

So you can replace 5.55 with 6.00 with the dc8 mod just like that?
by phoenix1414 - 2009-09-13 23:23:21
really

really hush? you can speak for every single cfw user? gimme a break.
by Adamchrisp - 2009-09-14 00:38:35
Um..

I think I remember the same thing being said about SoulCalibur needing OFW (not 6.00 though) but I went to try that out and a ripped version worked just fine... Either a CFW will be released or the ISO will be ripped, pirates will still get to play this game.
by NakedFaerie - 2009-09-14 00:40:13
wtf?

What are people so suprised about? Did you really think they will release it with the need for 5.00 firmware? HAHAHAHAHA We all knew it would need the latest firmware and I bet there will probably be some new anti-piracy in the game too.
by Acteon - 2009-09-14 02:21:49
Huh

I don't think anyone is really surprised by this. I'm far more concerned with the fact that we're two weeks into September and I've yet to see any real number of PSP or PSOne classics on the PSN - what exactly are people using the PSP Go supposed to play when it lands? I'm not a fan of Gran Turismo, Persona has been pushed back and the UK store has 4 old PSP games on it. Surely Sony can't be gearing up for yet another launch disaster?
by Foolmonkey - 2009-09-14 02:23:38
No.

Soul calibur works because it was leaked before the version requirement was put in. Not likely to happen again anytime soon.
by pewpie - 2009-09-14 02:59:15
oh noes

i cant wait!! i will have to abandon my lovely cfw psp and upgrade to ofw6!! lal ***** the ***** who wrote this *****.
by Silver-Tiger - 2009-09-14 04:14:45
...

@ TROYROCKSTHEFLOCK and @ Colak: If you have been waiting to play this game, why not buy the game instead? Seriously, you guys make it seem like CTW is the only way to play game....
by FreePlay - 2009-09-14 05:11:44
...

Of course you can. You can have any FW on the flash and still test 5.00m33 from the MS.
by noshoes84 - 2009-09-14 05:35:22
@Silver-Tiger

Buying the game has nothing to do with CFW. Even if you are running m33 and go out and buy the UMD the game still won't run. You need 6.00xxwhatever or 6.0ofw to run it.
by alibasbas - 2009-09-14 05:53:02
This can be seen as a good news.

This can be seen as a good news. Maybe this move by Sony will force Dark Alex to go out of retirement and work on a custom firmware for 6.00-M33.
by danielakadanny - 2009-09-14 06:17:57
like how someone else said...

the advertisement is always first XD
by Aces In The Palm - 2009-09-14 06:21:01
i doubt it

there is no real added functionality to 6.00 other than abilty to play 6.00 games being that 5.00m33 can be run from memstick using DCv8, the only reason for a 6.00CFW is piracy. DA aint going to do another m33 firmware until sony make it worth the effort.
by WiiRolled - 2009-09-14 06:31:38
lol @Silver-Tiger

Buying the game won't bypass the version check. @ Colak Pandorize your battery, get the 6.00 OFW and start playing
by WiiRolled - 2009-09-14 06:34:24
People, BUY THE GAME (if it's good)

Let's show our appreciation for this title, and we'll sure get more of them.
by Sn1boss - 2009-09-14 06:51:40
aahhh

no problem someone will eventually hack it sony keep bringin out protected firmware but its all down to the hardware and thats not very secure thats why they made psp go is completely different in hardware
by PSPfNruelzdude - 2009-09-14 07:21:10
Ok...

Yeah, let's show appreciation for a game that should have come out well over 3 years ago.
by PinCushion - 2009-09-14 10:50:11
Too bad

Too bad iR Shell won't run correctly in a firmware booted off the memory stick. Several of the major functions -the ones that makes it worth having- don't work. Sucks. . .
by KingPepper - 2009-09-14 10:52:39
About time Sony + Polyphony!!!!!

I should know i have been waiting for this game, since PSP launch day here in the UK. But only 4 cars in races, honestly, Polyphony, after all this time, surely you could of had 6 cars in races. Maybe there will be a special mode to unlock at the end, that allows you to race against 5 other cars, but in a lower framerate. Also i wonder what the guys at Polyphony will be working on when GT5 is finally released?
by KingPepper - 2009-09-14 10:58:13
Different hardware yes, but.........

The PSP Go will use the same Official firmware as the older PSP's, hence if the 6.00+ firmware is found to contain a exploit then all version's of PSP will be hacked open, see what i mean?
by jimftr - 2009-09-14 11:52:04
I don't care

So what if you need to update. Just make a pandora. I will be buying the game unlike evryone else here except for a few people. It's woth the £24.99/$38.99 asking price. Infact, that is a bargain becuase its much cheaper than other psp games. Seriously, just buy it, make a pandora. And wait for a new cfw. Is that so hard?
by symbal - 2009-09-14 12:43:26
...

I might buy it but i won't be stupid enough to buy a digital download because when the cfw comes out i can sell the umd and get some money back.
by Silver-Tiger - 2009-09-14 14:56:23
I stand corrected...

sorry, my bad. I didn't think about it. You are completely right. I had a long day LOL.
by Elric - 2009-09-14 15:36:20
CFW != Piracy, You Retards

Some salient points in the CFW debate for all of the haters: 1. CFW doesn't have anything to do with piracy and/or not buying games. It's about the added capabilities that CFW provides being essential to how you use the device once you've grown accustomed to them. POPs loading, multiple CSOs on mem stick, emulators, utilities, etc. 2. Pandora'ing to switch games IS NOT a viable work around. I use CFW on a PSP that has a 32Gb mem stick to load 10-15 PSP UMDs and 8 or so PSX games (yes, ALL legally purchased) onto a single memory stick and then I keep one UMD game or movie "in the pipe" (currently Resistance Retribution). I'm not even willing to jack around with multiple memory sticks or UMDs much less re-flash the freaking device between games. Now, if the era of homebrew is over, so be it. But the OFW better up its game to be at least close to as useful as my current device is (within limits some restrictions would be necessary on ISOs to curb piracy, etc) or I'll live with my current game library until OFW gets a can't live without it feature. Even in that case, I might just get another piece of hardware rather than constantly jacking around with my CFW/Pandora PSP Phat setup. But, FWIW, I have been an AVID PSP fan and an aggressive game buyer for the system, so for the time being, it represents the virtual loss of a customer for Sony, and they should consider that aspect of it. Some of the biggest CFW fans are PSP flag bearers on the net. So, when it comes down to it, all of you guys waving the piracy flag for OFW can go pound sand.
by Partof300 - 2009-09-14 15:50:18
Yes!!!!!!!

Do you know Sony owns Polyphony Digital? Futhermore do you realize that if it weren't for Sony, Playstation wouldn't exist? Futher, futhermore do you realize then we wouldn't have the PSP? Further, further, furthermore did you realize we then wouldn't have Gran Turismo for the PSP?
by x70xchallengerx - 2009-09-14 16:48:01
or...

or you can just swap the update in the game with a 3.0 update... o.o duh
by RLKirkland - 2009-09-14 17:19:36
or.......

a 1.5 update, or a 5.5 update, errr... i am getting a psp go so i am not worried about it i will keep my slim on CFW for my snes games and whatnot and the psp go can stay at latest OFW and for those worried about digital games when the psp go arrives in 17 days should be because im sure sony is uploaded tons of games to their servers but is waiting until the first to make them available for download so they can see how well the psp go is going to help in the digital department but yeah if you can afford it which by the way i am making sacrifices to make sure i can :) buy a psp go and gran turismo play the ***** out of it so we can test the battery and be happy
by NA1NSXR - 2009-09-14 23:41:33
Dual BOot

I would just be happy if we can get a easy dual boot functionality or version selection from the recovery menu.
by jonnyp_777 - 2009-09-14 23:59:13
Amen, to that...

...and not that DVC8 or whatever way either. We need a new Devhook or something similar. That would be sick. Whatever happened to Booster?
by RJ - 2009-09-15 07:35:19
-

I don't pirate PSP games (but I do rip my own PS1 games) and I own 20 or so UMDs but bugger me. I won't be getting this. In fact if hackers get to it and remove the OFW requirement I'm more likely to get that than pay for the UMD. Not a good move really. There is no way I'm losing my CFW and no way I'm going through the whole rigmarole of pandora a few times a day to play this and the PS1 games I play too much. Sorry Sony. And I'll be telling that to my contacts there xD
by Aces In The Palm - 2009-09-15 10:03:04
hehe

wrong wrong and your a pirate 1. CFW has always been about brew, just a pity people used it for pracy. 2. pandoring is what i use, if you say it dont work properly....you havent tried it your not reflashing anything i have 5.50 ofw + 5.00m33 on DCv8 when gt comes to aus, i'll have 6.00 + 5.00m33 i run CFW from DCv8 yest 5.00m33 some peeps may have to swap memcards but its worth it i have a hackable slim sold my fat slim can do more now
by Aces In The Palm - 2009-09-15 10:46:50
lol

im drunk and i can see past your chit
by Colak - 2009-09-15 19:11:52
5.55 or 6.00???

I have now bought my first PSP (D.I.R.T) game and have been using PSP for 1 1/2 years. the reason why i didnt buy it was because there havent been any good graphic games, now after soul calibur the best games comes showes up. *Now when D:I:R:T game requires Fw 5.55 how can i play it and then play my regular cfw games? I have a Pandora battery and Mstick ready to downgrade so i just want to be sure. Should i download and install 5.55fw or 6.00? can i downgrade fw 5.55?
by joey_sfb - 2009-09-15 22:06:32
I won't worry about it.

Personally, i buy every original game cause i collect them. Still i like piracy, cause it keep the original game price low due to lower demand. Law of economics, don't believe whatever Sony,M$ says, they will drain every drop of our blood if they could. Don't worry folk, it will be crack just like any other console system when in doubt check every console and PC games history. Which system and game does not get crack eventually. And i love it :)
