Just a little while back, Fanjita wrote a small article on what the people with non-homebrew-able PSPs should do. In my opinion, waiting for an exploit was the most sensible thing to do. And boy, you guys didn't have to wait very long! The Noobz team has just come out with an exploit that works on all firmwares up to 3.03, which is the latest firmware Sony has been able to come up with! This means that every firmware available currently is hackable and hopefully, downgradeable soon!
As of now, the only homebrew that runs through the exploit is a simple Hello World proof of concept, but we all know what the PSP scene can come up with in a very short while. And that's exactly what's gonna happen since Fanjita himself said that a 3.03 Downgrader will be coming soon!
Here's what Fanjita had to say:
You remember that the only thing holding us back from a downgrader for v3.03 was the lack of a user-mode exploit?
Well, we don't like to be held back from anything, so we went back to basics and looked over some of the old exploits. And what do you know? We found one! We did a little digging into the old GTA exploit, and discovered that it hadn't been properly patched after all.
We'll leave it as an exercise for the interested reader to figure out exactly how we got past the patch (and to give Sony a little while longer before the head-slapping "Doh!" moment :P)
I did have a talk with Fanjita and what surprised me the most was that "the only reason it took so long to find is that no-one thought they'd fix it so *badly*"! The most important question right now would be the availability kernel mode, and in Fanjita's own words, "It's a bit tricky, but yes, the kernel mode hole found by Team C+D still works from the Goofy exploit." The downgrader will use this to perform its magic.
The only catch is that you need an unpatched GTA:LCS UMD. Yes GTA Liberty City Stories, NOT Vice City Stories! The new UMDs being sold in shops are already patched, so you'll be better off finding a used one or asking your friends if they have one.
Here's the usage instructions:
- You need an original, unpatched GTA:LCS game. The new copies that you find in the shops now will not work.
- This only works for Liberty City Stories, not Vice City Stories.
- Extract the files from the ZIP into the /PSP/SAVEDATA folder on your memory stick.
- Start the GTA game, and enjoy the feeling of freshly-minted homebrew :D
UPDATE: Now we're sure all of you have been itching to give this exploit a try. Sadly, not everyone is fortunate enough to have the unpatched GTA: LCS UMD needed. Thanks to brandon6199 we can all have a look at "how this exploit works and what it looks like" (his very words).

Wow, after Sony force upgraded by PSP on warranty work, I have been without homebrew. Congrats Noobz team, you guys make owning a psp that much better ;)
My brother has a 2.81 and he's been dying for a downgrader for months. My other brother and I have 3.03 OE-B and he's been jealous as hell.

not that it affects me at all (oe-c) but it kinda sucks u need gta:ls unpatched umd for this. basically if anyone that has a firmware that's higher than 2.8 chances are they are new to the scene and don't have this OLD umd to begin with. kind of a catch 22 but still cool that it's possible.

Because at least you can pass around a known UMD to your mates etc. I agree it's not as good as a TIFF exploit, but it means that if people really want to downgrade they can (obviously not right at the moment, but no doubt shortly)

if i had the gta:lcs umd that works with this i would lend it out to people one at a time (through the mail) so anyone that wants to downgrade but doesn't have the umd could do this. if there's enough kind peeps around that are trustworthy get a pool going for these umd's so mass amounts of people can downgrade. just require a physical street address, full name, etc. then if some jackass stiffs ya for the umd then you can post his info on the web for all to flame / hack / whatever.

that is definitely un-patched. it took longer than 2 weeks to even find the exploit that edison carter used for the o.g. cheat device.
yes this works with firmwares from 2.00 - 3.03 and that includes 3.00

Excellent Job!! Now how long is going to take to have a proper "Downgrade Guide" and the require files? I mean the way it works is that it needs to go back to 1.50 before going to 3.03 OE-Ax. Right? Awesome! That GTA exploit really screwed Sony bad... If the exploit wasn't properly patched in 2.70+, then couldn't the "patched" GTA's not have been properly patched and possibly work? Anyways, this is great... I hope one universal downgrader comes out compatible with TA-082 and non TA-082 alike! Then there will be no confusion about which downgrader to use... or even better, just come out with a straight upgrade to 3.03 OE-C, that's all anyone really needs anyways!
I already have the new version of GTA. Just went to EB Games and they let me look through there used ones behind the counter and found one of the originals. Brought it home popped it in the ol PSP, started GTA and there it was. The goofy hello world screen. Perfect.

flip back da gta-lcs cover. look at da bottom bar where da barcode is. if da whole bar at da bottom is white color, it's unpatch. If it's black color, too bad. tat the patched version. mine da white 1 of course !
most probably coders will write a specific dg from 2.81-3.03 to 2.71. den from 2.71 use dark alex's 2.71 dg 4 ta-082 to change da idstorage

So the LCS exploit wasnt properly patched? The LCS Eloader was my intro to PSP homebrew and eventually let me downgrade from 2.6 thanks to Dark_Alex. Excellent work team Noobz!
I had a user over at the IGN PSP Lobby with 3.02 asking if he could get 3.03 OE-C and I had to tell him he couldn't...then a few hours later all firmwares are cracked, awesome job Noobz!!
u need a physical drive to dg n tat's called umd coz dis xploit is in da umd not psp system. w/o it u can't run any user-mode at all until such time when geniouses found hole in psp version. if dis xploit pave da way 2 another non-umd dg, den it'll be gta-less dg which is even better. but right now 1 step of a way boy.
Big mistake releasing it soo soon. Shouldhave waited until next update to downgrade that. Now it will be patched.

this was a perfect time to release this because even if they waited for another firmware to come out sony already knew about the full kernel access exploit making downgrading impossible i have a TA-082 psp downgraded to 1.5 and than to OE firmwares i bought it in walmart 1/15/07 downgraded it first day i bought it i bricked mine before trying to downgrade my other TA 082 psp 2.71 i used devhook to 1.5 created an OE dxar file and tried to flash it. it formated my flash and had an error with flashing 1.50 and 3.03. broke returned it at walmart and got this one i was mad because it was one day before TA 082 downgrade came out i got hype from fake ta 082 downgrade and was desperate. i have been through 6 psp s all returned at gamestop and walmart

@chepu: Eh. It's Sony's own fault for locking down homebrew; if HB was *only* unable to access the UMD drive, rather than being fully crippled, you wouldn't have the smart fellows in the scene hacking at the kernel. They'd be writing homebrew instead.

I just happened to have a copy of LCS laying around, and I wasn't sure if I had patched it yet. Just so happens that I never did. Which is good, because I, the moron that I am upgraded my psp to 2.82 when I didn't know about homebrew on the psp. I used to do it on the dreamcast, if you all remember that. check the firmware version required by the game. if it is 2.0 it's unpatched, if it's 2.6 (i think) it's patched

Like som guys said, it remembers me when I had 2.6 because I got a preowned PSP and bought GTA and then a bit later came out the eLoader... I remember it was a bit hard to get hombebrew working in the beggining, having to try a lot of times and getting the battery off XD never got out of 2.6 anyway, then I had 2,71 SE-B'' until today 3.03 OE-C owns!

Yeah, tis good news indeed...although I've had two PSP's for some time now (one with the latest and greatest homebrew config and another with the standard sony firmware - latest version)...before Open Edition came along - obviously much rather have both consoles running 3.03 OE-C.

To this day, FW1.51 and 1.52 are still uncracked. But this is pretty much irrelevant, because they can still upgrade to higher firmwares anyway... Nice for those with 3.00+. Oh, and they used that flamez background which SG57 and I used in the unreleased TIFF Block Dude...
Here's a funny story. Yesterday on socom I was telling people how there wouldn't be an exploit on 3.03 for a long time.... ROFL!!!!!!

Finally some good news for firmware 3.03 users. I wonder how many homebrew programs will be available ...
There were 2 patches made, one in the firmware, one in the game itself. The firmware patch, made by Sony and present in 2.70+ firmwares, was flawed, and that's what we exploited. The game patch, made by Rockstar and present in the newer UMDs, is different in nature and much more comprehensive. It cannot be exploited in this way.
What is it with so many people making statements to the effect that the ''Psp scene is dying'' or ''the Psp scene is alive again'' or ''the Psp scene is not dead after all'' Just because we might not get a new release of homebrew every single f****** minute, it doesn't mean that the scene is dead. There are so much great things already released for the Psp ffs. The scene is alive and always will be. I am glad to hear about this old/new exploit and I still have the unpatched GTA UMD. Nice work people!!

I knew my purchase of GTA was smart. Grand Theft Auto LCS to be the game of the homebrew community... The first GTA release is a must for collectors now... So downgrading a 3.03 will come sooner than I thought... ;)

The downgrade will be out in about a week or two not a month. Go to psp-hacks.com it gives much more information on this subject.......
you could get an unpatched gta:lcs by swapping it at block buster or some other place were you can rent a game

I think a big PSP update is in the works to combat custom FW and give noobs an incentive to update... that's why we haven't seen any new updates lately. Now sony is probably working twice as hard to release it and hope some noobs will see the new features and upgrade before a DG is released and screw themselves ;P and I bet a few noobs WILL upgrade if that happens... and then the next week they'll be making all kinds of threads on every known PSP forum saying "Can I downgrade my 3.04 PSP?"

Those people are right. After this the PSP is going to go downhill fast due to piracy. And that's all I'm stating about that comment. I stopped in to one of the 3 gamestop/ebgames stores at my local mall this evening, and the first store I stopped at had 2 copies of the original old unpatched disc. I grabbed one for $17, tested and confirmed the Goofy exploit on my 3.03 machine.
the main reason i am excited about this possible downgrade is for the full res video in Dark_Alex's oe-whatever and streaming TV from TVU player. I want more games like portable ops, vice city etc. And i know that the games will get worse with piracy. But i love watching movies on my psp and UMD selection sucks a big one. WHO WILL JOIN ME IN A NO ISO PLEDGE?

I got my PSP the day it came out (when i was 11) then upgraded when the updates came out but stopped on 2.6 those were the days useing the eloader and snes emulator

nice work, with the hello world. so many good uses of hombrew, cant wait to get my friend downgraded, the psp has little use without the snes emulator etc, which in my understanding is ok to have roms if we own the original carts right, something about fair use. actually to be fair the psp has little use over all, looking forward to some palm one keyboard stuff though. and no i havent read the 300 something comments if fair use was mentioned there, i'm a lazy arse. piracy is for the skint or/and greedy, support your game developers. if somethings worth having, its worth buying.

i think homebrew is eather dead or in that short home streach awaiting death in the last 6 months we have heard nothing about the n64 emu, the snes emu has been abandoned and the nes emu has its share of unresolved probloms and in reality those are the onlyones that people use now homebrew has just become a scene of paranoid teenage angst aginst a sysem that is controlling who makes the games the i encourage anyone who wants to add some life into this to contenue the work of the n64 emulater team and snesxtyl that is the only thing that will save the scene

dude, the psp is the best thing if u have to go somewhere, what if u go round some friends and they got some complete krud on the telly, i personnally cannot put up with popular shows like eastenders and big brother or the news etc. this little beauty gives me something to do while others watch their gay. and mariokart is pretty playable now with the auto frameskip setting on. still good

How do u know the difference between a patched gta and a non patched 1 ? and maybe a shop will have old stock of gta lcs so can you tell the difference between the old and new one

There are about 1000 pages where you can see how to downgrade to 1.5 (with 2.7 etc) and then upgrade to 3.03 oe-c! So read the FAQs and stop asking in posts.
