Firmware 2.80 to 1.50 Downgrader - The real story |

OK guys, here's the deal. I've been asking around people, trying to confirm whether the downgrader actually works or not. And while there may be a few bricks, it seems that the downgrader does work well IF you get everything right. After the barrage of bricks, there were still a lot of brave souls who were willing to test it.
The results are in, and while we don't have the exact number of bricks or successes, we'd like to advise you to stay away from it if you don't know what you're doing. The major problem seems to be that in the hurry of releasing the downgrader, 0okm failed to put any checks in the downgrader. In simple words, this means that the downgrader won't tell you if you're missing a file, nor will it tell you if you've placed them in the wrong place.
People who've successfully downgraded have either been incredibly lucky, or really good with firmware dumps. So yes, while the downgrader does work, the dangers far outweigh the advantages at this point. The good thing, like I said before, is that this type of downgrader will not only allow you to share dumps between friends, but also that applications like Easy Downgrader will make it much more fool proof than it is right now.
Until then, what we're gonna do is report this as news, but not give out the files on our servers. It's just too dangerous at this point, and I'm sure you can understand our concerns about you, our readers. You can get the file off 0okm's site and read the instructions properly and do it if you can.
You can also check out our forums for unofficial guides by our members, but we won't give out instructions at this point. So until a better version is released, we'd advise everyone to wait it out. Apologies for any confusion caused, and we hope that you can understand our concerns.
Update: Remember the previous version of this article - when we said Fanjita was testing this? Here's the result. It worked for Fanjita.

It said it was finished and asked me to poweroff, then i powered off but it wouldn't, so i took out the battery..
Then i powered on and all i get is a black screen and my green button lights up..

This downdater is now reported as a bricker, but if it worked (just like the dumper and all other homebrew) it requires eloader which uses an exploit not found in 2.81 and higher. Until we find a way to run the code to use this exploit to gain kernal access, we have no chance.
Well then I'm glad it doesn't work on TA-82 if it's a bricker. I hope the new DG will be stable and WORK on TA-82. *hint hint*

While I'm sure it might work for some (otherwise why bother releasing it?), I'm going to wait until I can be fairly sure it won't brick my PSP, or otherwise screw it up. I've waited this long, and so I think I can wait a little longer. Besides, I wasn't expecting the downgrader this soon, anyways. It was a surprise to me.

Correction to Andy's statement:
To know whether your psp can be downgraded or not, you have to know your motherboard model.
Open the UMD door, if you see code no. "IC1003" on the top right corner of the motherboard, it is TA-082 model n you are doomed. If there is no IC1003, you are either TA-079 or TA-081, the lucky one. These 2 models can be downgraded. Also you can roughly see another code no. "IC6001" on the top left corner if your model don'thave IC1003.

it's bcoz ta-082 motherboad works on different voltage n if you downgrade from 2.71 to 2.50 it's still ok. but below 2.50, somehow the motherboard will block itself from downgraded to 1.50...n 100% brick. only if there are certain codes which could bypass the block, then it's possible like there misterious abundant softdown from ookm.

haha, the value of being patient... If you got a brick cos you wanted to be the "1st", then it serves you right.
Valuable Lesson: Always let someone else be the guinea pig FIRST unless you're willing to ACCEPT the risks. Personally I'm not willing to risk it till it's confirmed working.

Its not a bricker, i'm sure most of you don't even know what that means, its purpose isn't to brick psps its to downgrade them, thus this is not a "bricker". at a guess most of the bricked psps were down to user fault not the downgraders. but do what you will, i mean everyone is obviously out to brick your psp's and so on .

Make sure you do have one of those....Make sure you don't have a TA-082..To do that open up your umd drive, turn around your psp so you're looking at the back, and then check out the top right-hand corner inside the umd slot. It will or will not have numbers on it, for specifics check out google....Sorry I don't know everything but there's a synopsis.

If you wanna unbrick your PSP, I believe getting the UP Modchip would do the trick. Saves you getting a new PSP.
Stuff like this is unfortunate, it happens, mistakes are made. This will just teach me (and others) to not rush and get the latest thing on the block. You know of the risks involved in flashing your PSP, you accepted these risks by pressing X to flash.
So don't be saying it's QJs fault, they report the news. And don't be evil to 0okm, he's trying to help you here, and it was a mistake. Some of you people can be so ungrateful, it's shocking.
why doesn't everybody wait for a youtube video to see if it works, especially after the last 2.80 downgrader witch didn't work?
If I had a 2.80 PSP (lucky I don't) I would rather be the last to downgrade than the first.......accept that you have a unhackable PSP for the moment and only trust it if lots of people who know all about the psp (like D_A) say it works
What's one more day of waiting? do not rush, they have full kernel access now, a REAL DOWNDATER for 2.80 is coming real fast, programmers are fighting to be the first to release the dg.
So, if you have a 2.80 just wait a little longer, tomorrow or the day after tomorrow there's gonna be at least 2 or 3 easy installers 100% secure around on the web.

Big mistake by oOkm, a real shame as well since he gave up on the TA-082 thing and pi**ed people off that way, and now he shot himself in the foot with this incomplete bricker.
It probably worked on his PSP and he saw that as enough, it really needed to be tested on multiple PSP's preferably with UP.
I don't know if he will come back from this, he is very talented, but a mistake like this one does you no favours what so ever.

I don't think Ookm did any mistake, I think it's just the people who try to downgrade that does something wrong, but it would be great if your downgrader could check that everything is corrent before starting, Ookm. at least the files, which loader and which mobo is probably harder to check (I'm no C dev myself so I don't know)

The downgrade works, you just have to be smart enough to use it. Don't just get the one file and think its done. You need some 1.5 files that are illegal to get over the internet.

This downdater worked perfectly for me 3 times!!
Problem is there are no safety checks, so when the n00bs don't include important files such as the 1.50 IPL or they use eloader instead of xloader the PSP bricks.
I have succesfully downdated my UP modded PSP twice (and bricked it twice by testing the eloader and missing IPL problems) and succesfully downdated a normal TA-081 UK PSP.
This has no given Ookm a bad name becasue of all the noobs not reading the instructions, and QJ removing the downdater stating IT IS a bricker.
i bricked my psp using this. I'm not blaming anyone but myself for not waiting.
It's not a bricker. It will only brick your PSP if you don't follow the instructions properly. Most of the people who bricked are probably *****gots that didn't know what they were doing.

You just need to be careful were you put the files. If you never downgraded before dont try this. It will brick your PSP. IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!
OK a lot has been said about the so called downgrade, now here is the truth.
The downgrade does work, you need a reliable source to download the DOWNDATER folder the FW150_ipl.bin file is 220KB and THIS MUST BE IN THE PRX folder.
Now if you have all the files it is now save to follow the instructions below:
1.. Place the DOWNDATER folder on the Root of your Memory Stick.
2.. Place the Ookm's 2.80 Files into PSP/GAME folder.
3.. Use XLOADER to start up the DOWNDATER.
4.. After 2-3 mins it will say "Please restart your PSP"
5.. After restarting your PSP the BSOD will apear click O to this and the PSP will reset.
6.. Enjoy 1.50
Please remember you must have the FW150_ipl.bin file and it must be 220KB in size.
There is always a chance of bricking your PSP, so please be carefull and follow these instruction correctly.
TA-082 USERS DO NOT USE THIS DOWNGRADER!
I was getting excited about the prospect of a 2.8 Downgrader being ready before christmas.
I was one of the first people to read this message (I know this because when I read it, there were 0 jumps and 0 comments)
I didn't even get a chance to download the downgrader. Lucky for me, I guess.

On PSP-Vault, Ameer and another guy have used an Easy Downgrader and suceeded in Downgrading. I'm not going to use it until tomorrow, but if any of you guys are feeling lucky then go ahead. Just view the forum called '2.80 DOWNGRADER RELEASED!!!'.

Hi all, I just downdated using the German 2.80 downdater ... and surprise surprise ... IT WORKED!
I have a Black 2.80 PSP and my motherboard has the I60001 numbers on the left side of the UMD hidden under a piece of framework.
The whole process took about 90 seconds and upon reboot, a BSOD occurred. Pressed 'O' and away we go!

I have successfully downgraded my PSP 2.80 to 1.50. Hear are the step by step working tutorial to downgrade 2.80 to 1.50 (Use at you own risk and good luck):
For 1.50 Firmware User:
1)Download %u201CFW280DownDate4 TA-079%u2033 and extract %u201C__SCE__FW150_ipl%u201D and %u201C%__SCE__FW150_ipl%u201D in %u201CFW150IPL_Dumper%u201D folder to ms0:>PSP>GAME>(put here).
2)Download %u201CFW1.50 File%u201D from psp-hacks downdater_final .rar or there is a download link in ookm%u2019s blog.
3)Extract downdater_final .rar>DOWNDATER/(everything) to root ms0:>DOWNDATER>(everything here).
4)Run %u201CFW1.50 ipl%u201D from your PSP Game menu under Memory Stick. It will create the critical file called %u201CFW150_ipl.bin%u201D in ms0:>DOWNDATER>PRX>(created here). Pls check to double confirm the bin file is in there.
5)Pass the %u201CFW150_ipl.bin%u201D to 2.80 user.
For 2.80 Firmware user:
Make sure your battery is fully charged and with the power cable on attached to the psp.
1)Download %u201CFW1.50 File%u201D from psp-hacks downdater_final .rar or there is a download link in ookm%u2019s blog.
2)Use the PSP to format memory stick first.
3)Put the %u201CDOWNDATER%u201D folder to the root of MS. Wait for 1.50 user to pass you the %u201CFW150_ipl.bin%u201D file and put it in ms0:>DOWNDATER>PRX>(put the file here together with other 7 prx files).
4)Download %u201CeLoaderv0.995 %u201CKriek%u201D (Windows Installer)%u201D or the manual install one from this site. For non window user, manually copy all the files and folders of eLoaderv0.995 "Kriek" to the correct directories in the PSP MS.
5)Window Installer: Connect your PSP to the computer. Run the %u201Celoaderv0995.exe%u201D. Follow the installer instruction to dump all the necessary files into the memory stick. Select %u201CGTA version%u201D during the installation process just to play safe (if you would feel safe by doing so). Make sure the installation directory is the ms0 (E: in my case) then click Install. Wait till it finish and exit.
6)Disconnect the USB. Reboot the PSP (not light restart),then go to PHOTO and choose %u201CxLoader 280%u2033 (DO NOT USE eLoader 0995 ! - it will brick your PSP). Do not click the %u201CxLoader 280%u2033 but INSTEAD press the PSP triangle button and click %u201CSlideshow%u201D.
IMPORTANT:
a)If the PSP hanged or crashed, just reboot it and try it again (It is because of the instability of the TIFF exploit).
b)If after you slideshowing the xLoader 280 and you notice the PSP screen become white and nothing happen with the MS light continueosly flashing, just reboot it and try again.
c)If you notice the PSP screen blink white and show the statement %u201CThe slideshow connot be started. There are no image that can be displayed.%u201D, it means the exloit patch successfully delivered. Now just click back. Also you will notice your PSP become no sound when you scroll through the XMB. This is normal.
7) Go to Game under Memory Stick run %u201C1.50DDforTA-079-081FW2.80PSP%u201D. Press %u201CCIRCLE%u201D to Start. Otherwise press %u201CCROSS%u201D to EXIT.
8)Press %u201CCIRCLE%u201D and the program will say %u201Cstart Downdate %u2026%u201D. Wait until the downgrading process finished, the program will say %u201CFinished. PowerOff to Exit%u201D. Now hold the POWER button up until the PSP shutdown then restart it.
9)You will see (probably in your first time) the BSoD screen (Blue Screen of Doom).
Press %u201CCIRCLE%u201D and the PSP will restart again and prompt you the %u201CInitial Setup%u201D.
10)Congratulatio n ! Customise through the %u201CInitial Setup%u201D and welcome to the world of homebrew freedom !
11) Simply check your version and confirm it%u2019s the BIG 1 POINT 50 !
Is not 0okm's fault, it's all your fault for using this program after being told thousand times not to use it. I'm sure he has been working hard to give u a chance to downgrade your psp.
By the way, i've got 2.80 since long time ago, waiting for this release for months. I haven't downgraded it yet. If you waited for a little longer, you could have saved your PSP.
Also I guess that you missed some files or placed them in the wrong place. When doing this kind of things you've got to be patient and to do things carefully.

God damn Socom 2. I started downgrading right after it Socom FTB 2 came out but the one psp i played socom 2 with was upgraded so I still have to wait like another how many month to finally have the last psp downgraded.

You can do something about it. You can:
1. Buy a new psp with a downgradable firmware,
2. Buy a new motherboard (you can buy them on ebay) and replace the one you have. It may difficult to install though, or........
3. If you have a warrant on your psp still, bring it back to the place you purchased it and get a new one. Most places don't have 3.02's get so I image the worst you'll get back is a 2.80 again or 2.81.

1. Format your memory stick(can be done in the psp settings menu somewhere)
2. Connect your psp to your computer trough usb
3. Remove all folders and drag everything inside "COPYTHEFILESINS IDETHISFOLDERTO MEMSTICKROOT"(folder) to your memstick
4. Now, go to PHOTO and press start on XLOADER 280, this will prompt an error(message), just press O
5. Go to GAME then MEMORY STICK and go to PatchSFO, launch it. Press X, It will reboot
6. Hold you power button for 5 seconds, it will do a "clean boot"
7. See 4 again
8. Now this time, go to the TA..DG0okm thingy, youll see it, I dont know the name exactly
9. Run it, press O and wait untill it says: Ready, shutdown psp(like that) do that
10. Enjoy!

so i downgraded my 2.8 to 1.5 and then i upgraded to 3.02 oe-a and then i try to run homebrew from the xmb and it starts up then it says it cant play it! can some one tell me whats wrong please

Using the german downgrader i managed it. Just use Xloader only and you should be fine. If i can do it, then i cant see why anyone else cant do it.

Those who upgraded their PSP dont deserve a downgrader, because they were stupid enough to actually upgrade.
i use easy downgrade from psp hack and everything work fine update to 3.02 OE-A.
everyone download the downgrade from psp hack save your save troble and money on your psp.
it is legit, you're just too stupid to know how to use it. 0okm thought ppl were intelligent enough but i guess there's a bunch of retards out there that can't follow a tutorial

when you run the 2.80 - 150.exe in windows, browse to the F:/ or whatever its plugged in to, not F:/PSP/. wurd.
its got a video also. follow the steps and it is almost impossible to brick.

I used EASY_Downgrader _0.1 by csfreakno1 and now have a 1.50 PSP.

Hey i a new reader of the blogs or sites my PSP is bricked how do i fix it
I downgraded no problem :,
i got 1.5 now and i dont even know what to do with it
I think the easy downgrader is really safe.
Here's what you do (as the read-me is in German)
1. Format Memory Stick
2. Put Xloader on (which comes with eloader0995?)
3. Run the exe. in windows, where your destination is the root of your psp, e.g. mine is G:\ yours might be E:\ or whatever
4.make sure you have 75% battery (I had mine on full and plugged in)
5. Click on the Xloader picture, and view it normally
6. Exit, and go to GAME, Memory stick and load the downgrader (called summut like1.5-2.80 woteva)
7. Wait 2 or 3 mins, DONT WATCH! IT IS TOO SCARY TO WATCH! lol
8. when it tells you to, restart the PSP (hold the power button til everything goes off
9. Switch on
10. Press Circle
11. Switch off and on again
12. Press Circle (coz the blue screen comes up)
13. Check System Information
14. Enjoy 1.50 (and format ur memory stick again ;))

not gonna brick my PSP
u messed ur own PSP up. It worked 4 me. u probably forgot the FW150_ipl.bin file. Sorry 4 ur loss but don't blame on 0okm. Try coding ur own downgrader.

just charge ur psp 100 percent and use the easy downgrader from psp-hacks make sure u follow directions and watch the video for help everything will run correctly and boom 1.5 to oe-a yup im backin up my games right now on cso's(2gig stick)(and 512mb stick)
i downgraded when people where still judgemental about the whole situation. It really does work, it has 1 small error reported on some psps (unharmful) it basicly at the beginning of the process (initialisation ) it may say your psp is ta-082 (when it is not) just restart the downgrader and it will work fine.
NOTE: this does not downgrade ta-082 psp's. use it at your own risk, get some help from others if you feel unsafe, there are alot of community members (trusted ones) that will help you guide through the process, but as is they are in no way responsible if you brick your psp.

Come on man this isn't exactly a bricker. It will only brick if you use eloader instead of xloader or place files in the wrong place. It's true that safety check should have been put in but it's not like he has to or anything and all those people who never take the time to open the readme really paid the price this time. There was an Easy Downgrader released at pep-hacks that puts the files in the right location so as long as your smart enough to tell the difference between "e" and "x" the you'll be ok :, I downgraded with it and everything went nice and smooth.

Take a time to read what's happened; people incorrectly placed their files, and due to 0okm's lack of security measures, some PSPs were bricked.
The downdater does work though, I just did mines.
If you're a little nervous (I certainly was), head over to PSP Vault (www.psp-vault.com). They have a wonderful guide on their front page, that, if you can read, you'll be able to follow.
Good luck if you try it.

im on a european 1003 that i got on uk launch. 2.80 to 1.5 i used the full package with the psp ipl file. no problems just took me a while to run it. i was havin sum trouble with xloader not the downgrader, tis all good.

I don't know what any of you are talking about... I just downgraded my brother and best friends psp's who's were at 2.80 and had 0 PROBLEMS/0 BRICKS... they both are running 1.5 now... I'm assuming if anyone bricked it's because a direction wasn't followed correctly... anywho to fix either buy a new motherboard/get a mod chip/send to sony... or go to gamestop and buy a refurbished PSP -- Those always have old FW and are usually in really good condition. 150$.

I'm now 1.50 user and downloading 3.02 OE. I used the Spanish downgrader easy installer (you only have to click next all the time). 0 bricks with this installer and at least 30 tests, including noobs.
This has got everything you need. Downgrader, 1.50 ipl, xLoader. Just install it and run it WITH XLOADER NOT ELOADER. ELOADER WILL BRICK YOUR PSP. That's the URL from the installer: http://www59.megaupload.com/files/c160f7aba908defa4ef8755ef45403f3/downgrade_2.80_by_ookm_packed_by_zerox.exe
I downgraded earlier today from 2.8, I was nervous because this was my first time, but it worked!;) Proud 1.5 owner.
Just follow these steps, you DO NOT USE the dumps people said earlier, that is whats bricking the PSP's
Steps:
1) Format PSP memory Stick before you do anything
2)Download %u201CFW1.50 File%u201D from psp-hacks downdater_final .rar or there is a download link in ookm%u2019s blog.

3)Put the %u201CDOWNDATER%u201D folder to the root of MS. Wait for 1.50 user to pass you the %u201CFW150_ipl.bin%u201D file and put it in ms0:>DOWNDATER>PRX>(put the file here together with other 7 prx files).
4)Download %u201CeLoaderv0.995 %u201CKriek%u201D (Windows Installer)%u201D or the manual install one from this site. For non window user, manually copy all the files and folders of eLoaderv0.995 "Kriek" to the correct directories in the PSP MS.
5)Window Installer: Connect your PSP to the computer. Run the %u201Celoaderv0995.exe%u201D. Follow the installer instruction to dump all the necessary files into the memory stick. Select %u201CGTA version%u201D during the installation process just to play safe (if you would feel safe by doing so). Make sure the installation directory is the ms0 (E: in my case) then click Install. Wait till it finish and exit.
6)Disconnect the USB. Reboot PSP. Afterwards go to PHOTO and choose %u201CxLoader 280%u2033. Use eLoader 0995. Click the %u201CxLoader 280%u2033, and then click %u201CSlideshow%u201D.
IMPORTANT:
a)If the PSP hanged or crashed, just reboot it and try it again (It is because of the instability of the TIFF exploit).
b)If after you slideshowing the xLoader 280 and you notice the PSP screen become white and nothing happen with the MS light continueosly flashing, just reboot it and try again.
c)If you notice the PSP screen blink white and show the statement %u201CThe slideshow connot be started. There are no image that can be displayed.%u201D, it means the exloit patch successfully delivered. Now just click back. Also you will notice your PSP become no sound when you scroll through the XMB. This is normal.
7) Go to Game under Memory Stick run %u201C1.50DDforTA-079-081FW2.80PSP%u201D. Press %u201CCIRCLE%u201D to Start. Otherwise press %u201CCROSS%u201D to EXIT.
8)Press %u201CCIRCLE%u201D and the program will say %u201Cstart Downdate %u2026%u201D. Wait until the downgrading process finished, the program will say %u201CFinished. PowerOff to Exit%u201D. Now hold the POWER button up until the PSP shutdown then restart it.
9)You will see (probably in your first time) the BSoD screen (Blue Screen of Doom).
Press %u201CCIRCLE%u201D and the PSP will restart again and prompt you the %u201CInitial Setup%u201D.
10)Congratulatio n ! Customise through the %u201CInitial Setup%u201D and welcome to the world of homebrew freedom !
11) Simply check your version and confirm it%u2019s the BIG 1 POINT 50 !

PRESS X ONCE and then flip it to sleep mode, then hold the switch up for 10 seconds until it turns on.
9)You will see the Blue Screen Of Doom screen.
Press %u201CCIRCLE%u201D and the PSP will restart again and prompt you the %u201CInitial Setup%u201D.
10)Done! Go through the %u201CInitial Setup%u201D/ Welcome to homebrew!

ok, It would never come to my mind to say this, but after I tested the downgrader, it worked. SERIUS it worked.
You only need to follow the instructions. STEP-BY-STEP.
I tested this on a friends PSP cuz I have 3.00, and he had 2.80... It was so exciting but also I was very unsure... and when it worked, it was such a relief...

With this being an overall success, does that mean the guys are at work on 2.81? I got unlucky and managed to buy a TA-082 2.81, which leaves me a very unhappy person

Well if your doing something on your psp perhaps a downgrader and u screw it up then ur psp will become bricked which means your firmware is corrupted and therefore you can't really do anything (upgrade or downgrade) either you have to find an unbricker or get it fixed. But if ur using the downgrader just use the easy one.

Dang, glad I waited this one out! I had already made copies of all of my PSP files and was ready to downgrade. I guess I'll wait out Playing PSX games on PSP for a while.
My PSP doesn't appear to be bricked, the sound still works, but there is nothing on the screen.
EDIT: The screen just started working until I hit a button. it went black again.
I started randomly pushing buttons and it's all working perfectly as a 1.50 should.
basically, I'll end this with a note: Download everything you can about the DGer before you try it. Lol, i rechecked everything on mine before the last time i tried it, and noticed a folder was placed wrong. I almost ***** my pants when it didn't say it could load the Lflash thing!!
