2.71 Update

Well, after the 2.71 news update, we finally have the 2.7 upgrade EBOOT available for download. We've already documented the new features in the earlier article. I'll still just go thru the new 'features' if you can call them that.
  • Game demos like Loco Roco and Kazuo can be downloaded and stored on Memory Stick
  • Some fixes related to Location Free Base Players (LF-B1 and LF-X11)
I'll say it even though most of you guys know it. Homebrew doesn't run on 2.70 and above currently. Period. If you upgrade your PSP, you're doing it at your own discretion. Secondly, this new upgrade doesn't mean that there was an exploit in 2.7. If you're thinking it is so, stop.

In case you're hell bent of getting rid of homebrew on your PSP, go ahead and download the update. After saving the EBOOT.PBP file, make a UPDATE folder in the PSP folder of the Memory Stick, and put the file in there. And yes, before upgrading, remember to say bye-bye to homebrew.

This "fact" in untrue. I've updated myself and that option is not there(I've confirmed this with many users on other message boards). As for homebrew on 2.71? I wasen't even aware homebrew was availible for anything higher than 2.6. You guys are getting sloppy...

» wtf..

No problem with upgrading, especially that now some actual good games are coming out. If I ever want homebrew, I just pull out my GP2X. The PSX emulator on there is already released and progressing.

» Jap Firmware v2.71 may be different to EU and US versions

Here's a thing:

I decided to update using the psp's built in wifi network update function this time, instead of going through yourpsp.com

I ended up with the new firmware (v2.71) as expected, and the new features were as described on yourpsp.com except I've also ended up with a new icon under "Network" called "Portable television", which takes me straight to "P-tv" - the Japanese service that lets you pay for and download jap tv clips direct to your psp (except that I cant work out how to because I dont speak japanese! - a shame in a way, as it appears to be advertising free downloads of world cup highlights, but thats another story...)

I'm assuming it did this because I've got a jap psp, so the network update function has directed it to the jap psp firmware's server.

Thing is, so far we've all been under the impression that the network updates are identical across territories. However, I'm willing to bet that the US and EU firmware v2.71 dont include this P-tv feature (I cant test them out on my psp now I've updated it using the jap one because if I try to install the EU firmware update over the jap one, it wont do it and tells me there is no need to update as I have the latest system software)

Just thought I'd mention it because if future firmware updates are going to become increasingly tailored to territory, then this may have implications for those of us who have Jap or US psps (such as, do you opt for the firmware update from the same region as your psp to absolutely ensure compatablility, or go for the EU one in case it includes EU specific features?)

by 1.5owner - 2006-06-01 08:10
» wtf?!

hmmm...not much in this update other than "security" i see. Don't upgrade! Stay with homebrew, which is free! #5, quality homebrew is in the making. Remember that these betas like iris and the N64 emulators will someday become quality games that anyone would love to have on a handheld. The PSX emulator will undoubtedly require the latest firmware plus a lot of money, but guess what, the n64 is a much better system with more great classics like zelda and donkey kong. Nintendo didn't switch to an audience that consists purely of four-year-old ***** suckers until the gamecube!

my point being, just like in all of my posts, $ony can go to hell for updating its "security" and throwing in some small benefits to get people to upgrade. Man, just get a UMD loader, then ur laughing at $ony when ur running the newest games on a 1.5 PSP! Homebrew web browsers and flash players are being worked on in the meantime

If it is not the orginal psp one (samsung i think) the firmware will not load, so they might be trying some new security for the modchip.

Plus why are there dumbasses upgrading to 2.71.

Ok i understand that if you have a 2.60 and was REALLY REALY SUPER DIE HARD for flash and Loco Roco you would. But 2.71 Theres nothing new there why update and risk new security features.

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-06-01 11:40
» no homebrew through demos

48, it's not a gateway that the demos use to run. The demos are signed off to be be able to run. They have the specific codes necessary to tell the psp that they are fine. Sony never just locked every single thing out, they just locked out anythign that wasn't signed. After they're signed ofcourse they're encrypted.

What I'm confused about is you could run the locoroco demo at version 2.7, why is that on the list of added functionality? Did they change that demo so it could no longer run?

» not bad

I got a second PSP, finally deciding that my first PSP is going to remain a homebrew development machine for ever. :)

Really happy with it too - the d-pad is much better, if a bit loose, it is also much higher up so easier to use. All the buttons are better anyway.

I upgraded it immediately and will keep doing so as new releases are made in Europe. After I upgraded I went to the Japanese site and downloaded both game demos, found them on my memory stick and could play them right away. Very nice, seamless stuff!

And the demos are actually very good, too. Loco Roco is an amazing little game, I love it. And the other game allows you to play Sudoku at 4 different difficulty levels, and has some nice special effects and feedback things, and you lose a life each time you make an error. It's much better than I expected, really.

So, these are great developments, and I hope being able to download demos is going to be the norm, just as you could get PS2 game demos on a demo disc with the Official Playstation Magazine.

by Jessie@SCEA - 2006-06-02 01:22
» Just wait

Sony's playing smart, next you'll see firmware version 3.00 with playable demos of Gran Turismo and more. That's going to be hard to resist updating.

by .A.J. - 2006-06-02 01:24
» Why Upgrade?

Having 2 psp's, I still see no reason to upgrade either of them. I will likely upgrade one of them when I get a PS3 and there is sufficient bennifit in the interaction between the PS3 and PSP. I'm not going to upgrade just because I get a PS3.

Options that I would consider upgrading for:

1) Homebrew allowed

2) V.O.I.P. services

3) PS3 as Location Free Player (location free player is currently the first time I have ever seen a product peripheral cost more than the product it is designed to work with. What a joke.)

4) G.P.S. Not a lame one, I'm talking full functioning with useful options.

5) Keyboard or more effective input method (seriously, can $ony really be happy with that O.S.K. they have?)

Alright, I'm done dreaming. back to the real world.

by cj - 2006-06-02 02:17
» loco roco in english

well on the official us psp site, they now have the 2.71 update, there is no mention of a new icon so that must be jap psp only. of note however is the mention of locoroco being the "only" downloadable demo at the time then in parenthesis(sp?) says (demo release TBD)

so i'm led to believe that we will be getting our own demos just have to play in japanese for now.

» Why sony dislikes homebrews

Sony doesn't like homebrews because of the jerks that hack UMD .ISOs. If people download UMDs onto memory sticks, then Sony loses sales. Sony secretly enjoys the NES, SNES, GBA, and N64 emulators because they might make the Nintendo "Viirtual Console" feature on the Revolution practically useless. Perhaps developers could persuade Sony to allow these and other homebrews to run on the PSP as long as they are certified by Sony. Homebrews also give people a reason to buy the PSP as it is the only system that can be homebrewed easily. People buy a DS when they think that Sony is undermining its customers buy forcing them to get stupid upgrades. Unless Sony comes up with some really neat features, such as free online games and portable TV, it may well end up like the many others that tried and failed to dethrone Nintendo from its portable perch.

» 2.7 not worth it till Homebrew

I have a PSP 2.7

Flash runs but very slow

memory runs out quickly

demos for 2.7 are 2-D such as LOCOROCO

LOCOROCO demo from Japan works on American PSP

2.71 is the same as 2.7

same games for both just a little more work to get

LOCOROCO on 2.7 than 2.71

for those of you with 2.7 not 2.71 and want LOCOROCO

go to this website to download the demo from Japan

http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.jp.playstation.com%2Fscej%2Ftitle%2Flocoroco%2Fdl%2Ftrial_dl.html&langpair=ja%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&prev=%2Flanguage_tools

» Part 1: BUGS BUGS BUGS! Part 2: Homebrew Game Sharing

Part 1: 2.71 is sooooooooo *****en buggy. Today i was listening to music and in the middle of the song it just skipped 2 the next song. i was like wat the *****. Then i looked back and i see the file just freakin became corrupted. This is the 3rd time its happened. Then, i went on the internet, went to pspcrazy.com from my bookmarks and then when i tried to go to aimonpsp.com from my bookmarks, all my bookmarks dissapeared. This has happened 6 times! Is it my memory card? Is it my 2.71 firmware? Has this happened 2 anyone else?

Part 2: What if someone made a homebrew app with a game sharing feature. Then a friend with a 1.5 (or 2.6 if they have gta) could install the app then select game sharing from the homebrew and the person with 2.7 or 2.71 could select game sharing from the psp's menu. You would only be able 2 use it once but it would still be cool. Would this work?

» A thought

You know, maybe the reason why sony keeps attacking homebrew is so that you will go out and buy a second psp. How many psp's have been sold? Probably a *****load. Blocking homebrew on new versions means that in order to get the best of both worlds, you have to buy another system. So if everyone does that, the number of psp's sold is multiplied by 2.

Sounds logical to me.

» Game Demos

Its been a *****en month since the 2.71 update. The only thing that update included was the ability to download game demos. hmm, but when u think about it, there was no update because there is no difference bettween 2.70 and 2.71. If your going to have an update for gamedemos, maybe u should accualy release some. R there any other gamedemos beside locoroco and the 1 that begins with a k?
