Downgrade Test

Latest Update: 6/29, 3:25pm EST

Yesterday we got the breaking news that Kernel mode in 2.5 and 2.6 had been unlocked by hitchhikr of "hitchhikr SoftWorks" and demo scene group Neural. This was a incredible accomplishment that was previously thought impossible. Fanjita and many other members of the PSP homebrew community have come together and been testing the functionality of the proposed exploit.

So far a few interesting things have surfaced. Fanjita has shown his progress with the newly found exploit and today we bring you another. Dark_Alex from our forums has released a "Downgrader Test" for 2.50 / 2.60 PSP's. We have been watching carefully over this downgrader since its release and have got the entire scoop for you.

Dark_Alex's Downgrader Test for 2.50 / 2.60 version firmware requires a few very specific steps to be taken in order to get a glimpse at the doorway to success. As listed in the title this is TEST software and by no way 100% functional on all PSP's. With that said, we have heard a number of test reports on this Downgrader and have the brick count results after the jump.

"Therefore downgrading from 2.6 to 1.5 could in fact become a reality."

It wasn't long after the release that a few brave souls stepped up to test this new release. users who claimed to have succeeded in downgrading from 2.6 to 1.5. PSPxNax announced that he had successfully downgraded from 2.6 to 1.5. Soon after 1 more report of a successful upgrade from the IRC room I was idling came in. Then the dreadful news struck. One PSP has succumb to the death brick. Suspense filled the room as we waiting for further confirmation. Not another 5 minutes then another report of another PSP taking the plunge into darkness.

At this point I turned to the forums which was already full of possible outcomes for PSP owners who were brave enough to take the stab at reaching towards that beautiful paradise of homebrew or laying their PSP on a death bed. TheMarioKarters, known hacking enthusiast was all over it. He then reported sadly a few posts later that his attempt had been unsuccessful. Note that owners of the TA-082 version PSP's, like TMK's should not attempt the downgrade as it will most likely fail.

One of our moderators Abe Froeman was determined to get to the bottom of this and setup his PSP to face the downgrade roulette. After getting fully setup he attempted the downgrade. He too was unsuccessful. However, something unusual happened while he was trying to downgrade and he was able to get his PSP to reboot again by shorting the battery as previously outlined by PSIX developer Naoneo.

With all of this such an surge of excitement slowly starting to dim I turned back to the dark dungeons of IRC to check on the latest developments. A smile started grew on my face as my assumptions were confirmed, not all hope was lost. The developers discussing this concept design were not totally pessimistic. New ideas on what might be able to solve the problem with the downgrader started filling the channel. Some shot down, other acknowledge and discussed. A collective of independent remarkably intelligent and creative developers apparently having no limits.

While speaking to one of the developers who was involved in the discussion he divulged information on what could be possible solutions to fix bugs in the this first Test Downgrader. "sceloManager and flash0 on 2.01+ dont get along very well...at all", said Bri3d. "Calls to the Sony PRX upgrade functions format the flash and write the IPL. After that copying the files will fail [since] trying to remount flash0 read/write is a no go." So at this point theres still more work to be done. However, he said it was very possible in the future. Downgrading from 2.6 to 1.5 could in fact become a reality. My jaw drops at the thought.

Update #1: A new update has been released. This fixes a problem with the downdater not creating directorys. The creation of directorys is now fixed, however the iomanager check still needs to be handled for further progress.

Update #2: Dark_Alex has released the source code for his latest progress on the 2.50/2.60 Downgrader. This release is meant only for developers to analyze and possibly take it further so it is a functional process.
The downdater is mostly confirmed not to work. I update a slightly modified source code. It should be relatively more secure. I donÂ’t provide the binaries.

I found two glitches in the code:

1) The restart functionÂ… Originally it was intended for a restart, but it did nothing, making possible that if some premature error before doing the real thing failed to continue the real downdate process. Now it will cause an on-purpose exception (this only will happen either at the begginiing before the unsecure code begins or at the end, when all is finished)

2) Now IÂ’ve re-assigned the flash device after the logical format. Probably more secure.

Update #3: Dark_Alex has released v0.4 of his source code, containing the following changes:
1) Removed display: pspDebugScreen functions can freeze the psp 2.XX in kernel mode in any random moment.

2) A little bugfix. Tthe first file couldn't be correctly created because the first directory was not created.

3) Removed the check for the AC adaptor. It will be added later again.

Current bugs: if the ioassign fails, it will result in a brick, because the flash was previously formatted.

As FreePlay and others have said this will brick your PSP in its current state. Something to always be aware of when trying new test software that has not been tested on a real PSP.

I feel its important to portray this information in full so that others do not mistake this as a fully working versoin.

This is not necessarily impossible to work, although without a doubt currently this specific program at it's current state is very sketchy, and I wouldn't ever personally use it. But the ideas behind it are good, and this program was made with good intentions, and actually DOES do more than just "brick teh psp lol i typ bad", it's just not 100% now.

"Secondly, stop the donate links spamming. Spammers will be dealt with severely"

I sacrificed Homebrew for Flash simply because I bricked my PSP while updating once, and it came back 2.6 At the time, 2.6 was still its bogan self, so I decided to go to 2.71 for Flash.

The Flash is alright, but not nearly as good as homebrew!

I wouldn't downgrade at the moment since it doesn't quite work, but if they eventually get eLoader running Kernel mode, and eventually hack 2.7 "a la Devhook", then I'll be happy.

And xbin's lying... Just think logically, HOW could he have got system software version 1.0 when the updater that DOESN'T WORK is attempting to flash a dumped 1.5?

Just

Use

Your

Common

Sense!

To add to this, the downgrader IS actually possible... With kernel mode access, the user effectively controls the entire PSP hardware, meaning there are workarounds.

Instruction for the 1.50 user

-----------------------------

1) Copy the folders downhelper and downhelper% from the folder 1.50 HELPER folder to /PSP/GAME/ in your memstick.

2) Obtain the 1.50 updater and put it in /PSP/GAME/UPDATE in your memstick.

Some download links for it:

http://www.psphacks.net/files/PSPFirmwares/1.5/

http://dl.qj.net/PSP-Firmware-1.50-F.../163/catid/163

3) Init the downhelper program.

It will dump your flash and some files from the updater eboot to the memstick.

4) After that, the program will exit. You can now delete the updater from /PSP/GAME/UPDATE

5) You'll notice that you have a new folder in the root of your memstick called "DOWNDATER".

That's the folder you'll have to send to a 2.50/2.60 to let him test the downgrade.

Instructions for the 2.50/2.60 user

-----------------------------------

1) Copy the folder the DOWNGRADER/2.50/DOWNDATERTEST if you have 2.50

or DOWNGRADER/2.60/DOWNDATERTEST if you have 2.60 to /PSP/GAME/ in your memstick

2) Wait someone with 1.50 to pass you a folder called DOWNDATER and copy it to the root of your memstick.

3) Init gta and the eLoader

4) In the eLoader menu, choose the downdater test. WARNING: the program won't output any display and any warnings, it will init the downgrader process inmediatelly.

5) You'll see the your memstick flashing. That means that your psp is being flashed from the memstick.

You won't see any type of output in the screen (this is for safety). When the memstick finishes of flashing, WAIT at least a minute, and then reinit your psp by holding the power button.

6) That's all. If all went right, you'll have 1.50. If it went less good, you'll still have 2.50/2.60. If all went wrong, you'll have a bricked psp(except in the case you have the modchip) Remember that you have accepted that risk.

# not totally a lieGuest 2006-06-28 21:00
what happened to xbins is not totally a lie I think. I've experienced it once! (not exectly the same though)

last year, I bought a ceramic white fw2.00 psp and have successfully downgraded it to fw1.50 and I'm enjoying it till now. 2 weeks later, a friend brought me his black fw2.00 psp and he wanted me to downgrade it for him. I did everything like my 1st attemp but suddenly everything went wrong and the power just turned off during the process. after turning it back on, I gave it another go and it failed again!! I got nervous and tried to calm myself. I tried to check his psp fw once again and guest what? it stated fw1.00!! after that I just did the simple update from 1.0 to 1.5 for him and everything went perfect!

I dunno if there's somebody out there had had the same experience as mine. I've downgraded 5 psp's and that was the only time it happen.

anyway, for 2.6 dowgrading, I'm looking forward to it although I'm on 1.5. keep up the good work because everybody deserve using homebrews!

Why release something to the general public (or at all for that matter) if it is guaranteed to brick your PSP? If it is at all useful to devs (although I can't see how it could be when they're saying there is a 100% failure probability) shouldn't it stay in their hands?

# No it won't workGuest 2006-06-29 01:36
No this will not work for 2.7+

Sony plugged the GTA work around with the updated firmware, an in 2.71 also changed some of the security issues such as the Overflow that's being talked about.

You think 2.71 didn't do anything, well think again. Why did LocoRoco work on 2.7 firmware but now requires 2.71? Simple because Sony found the exploit and fixed it with the 2.71 firmware then change the SFO file to require 2.71 as the users firmware in order to play LocoRoco.

I also think it's true to say that 2.7 encrypition key will be the same a 2.60 however again as added security the would have changed this is firmware 2.71.

Looks like 2.7 users will benifit from all this however 2.71 users will be waiting another 6 months for some sort of expolit.

What I have found though is that if you change the PBP file using a hex editior and rename all the 1.50 in firmware 1.50 then the PSP on version 2.71 will start the Upgrade however is fails by coming back after half loading and say the "Game can't be played".

Another thing I found out is that you can use the LocoRoco folder and change a firmwares SFO structure just enough and the update will start once again and show the Update System etc.. however it also comes up with another screen saying the files is corrupted.

The best way to trick the PSP is by creating a flash dump (format) then reinstalling the firmware as though it's a virgin system with no firmware installed.

I think a flasher would be the best bet and use the serial port to it's advantage. The flasher software would format the old firmware and then install a fresh version of any firmware you wished, sort of like what the V3 Motorola Flasher currently do.

Anyone with these sort of skill such as mobile hackers could such software and then we would all be open to use our PSP's the way we wish.

You're doing a major firmware downgrade like xbins did, you don't plug it in and choose to do it when your battery is basically 1%.

Isn't that always the way? Your battery dies EXACTLY while doing something completely experimental and requiring constant voltage.

Tough break xbins but I'm happy to see it turned out so well! Sure you lied several times and even admitted to it, but I have faith in your run-on sentence and terrible grammar ramblings.

Beware of Fake Downgraders

Seems a lot of people have been buzzing about some new "downgraders" which apparently allow 2.01+ users to downgrade back down to 1.5. Please remember that the only and I mean the only working downgrade is for v2.0 PSP's. Anyone claiming to have a downgrader for v2.01 or above is just trying to either rip you off or trying to brick your PSP.

I should add that a legit test downgrader is currently under development by PSP coder Dark Alex, but in its current stage it will almost guarantee that your PSP is bricked so I suggest staying away from it for now.

You know how easy it is to hack a different firmware eboot and change the firmware number? And just changeing the firmware number to 1.00 only means that you will have to update to the next level of firmware ,1.50 to play your games!! DO NOT USE THIS DOWNGRADER YET UNTIL IT IS 100% FINISHED AND TESTED!!!!

This is really getting irratating, everybody saying, "Don't try it, it will never work!" There is no final release yet, so its going to be buggy, maybe costing you your psp. But saying it will never work is probably coming from 1.5 users or TA-082 users, that dont want this to work for the rest of us. Just let them work this out and keep supporting the ones working this issue out.

One of the reasons that so many bricks have come from this is because they prolly didn't use a "clean" dump of 1.5

There can be no fontmod, no flashed gameboots nothing like that. According to pspbrew.com its a good idea to upgrade to 2.0 and downgrade to 1.5 just to make sure its completely clean.

Hitchhikr, Fanjita and the others are working ona 2.6 with homebrew apps..

So don't hink you'll have to stay 1.5 forever... This is for the ones hat cannot wait months to have homebrew for 2.6 and want to have inmediatly access to all 1.5 stuff..

how long is it gonna take, i belive they will eventually do it but i think sony will take severe action cause if this works pple are gonna dwnload isos rarher than buying the games via devs 2.5 program so sonys profits on games are gonna drop big time. I think there either gonna bring version 3.0 out with amazing features to make us upgrade or there gona just pack the psp in because there not gonna make ought .

Wish it was true -.- Unfortunately, there are two glaring errors in your pictures. One, since when was the "System information" screen text so horribly out of alignment? Secondly, it's interesting how you managed to "downgrade" with that background. For something that requires the PSP to essentially be back to it's factory defaults (plus or minus a couple things) it really strikes me as odd. Oh, and to 195, you bricked the PSP. It sucks, but without the modchip, or sending it to Sony in hopes that they'll either repair it or give you a new one, you've now got a pretty-looking paperweight.

This whole downgrader is definitely heartening though. With a bit of patience, we may eventually see something like this that does it's job with a minimal risk of bricking. Now to just wait...

It might help if you copy all your 2.6 stuff on your memory stick to your PC in a folder. Then format your memory stick and redownload ONLY the appropriate applications and folders and try the downgrader. If it works then copy the programs you had back onto it from your PC. If to doesn't, at leat you have your folders with all the stuff when you buy a new one :)

i am going to wait for a flawless program to come out just like the 2.0. and wait until it is garrantied to not brick with a video and pic of proof. then ill think about it.

to you other 2.6ers dont dl this and risk every thing. trust me, if you dont want to risk it, deal with your psp for like 4 weeks to a 2 months when they come out with the perfect program then you will only be risking the odds of 8 out of 10 instead of 1 to a million shot.

so think about it guys your at a black jack table and right now you have a 2 and a 6 with 250 dollors on the line. are you willing to risk it or wait later for a black jack and then betting your 250 dollors.

just think about it and be smart about it. after all its your psp.

All we need to do is sort the flash stuff out, and we'll have a downgrader :D (Of course, thats probably easier said than done. I'm not a dev, so I'm shootin in the dark here)

dont go for it until ther is proof i mean its only been out for a day FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. jeez i dont mean to be obserd or in a bad state of mind. its just common cant you guys wait for like 3 weeks at least.

LET ME EXPLAIN THIS IN CRUDE LAMINS TERMS - WAIT UNTIL THE FINNAL VIRISON COMES OUT DUMB ASSES. AND WAIT FOR MORE TEST RESULTS. I MEAN DO YOU WANT TO BE A RESULT OF ANOTHER BRICKED PSP. AND WONDER WHAT YOU DID WRONG..... NO, I WOULD'NT. JUST WAIT A LOUSY 3 WEEKS AT LEAST WITH YOUR 2.6 AND BE HAPPY WITH IT. THEN WHEN A GOOD DECENT VIRSION COMES OUT. then your good. jeez, just stop getting exited, i mean you or your parents payed 250 dollors for this psp. so dont brake it. be safe with it. just like i always say

Good god some of you are short sighted, Kernal access means that potentially anyone with a 2.6 down firmware will run homebrew as easily as 1.0 - 1.5

So this means what?

It means why the hell would you want a down grader when the exploit opens the possibility of straight programming to the psp like home brew should.

It means homebrew PLUS the official functions of the latest firmware.

If they can make it work that is.

Fist of all even if 2.60 runs kernel access it has a limit of 2mg of memory it can use to run homebrew,.

I nkow 1.50 does also, but accessing homebrew thru GTA takes up more memory, thus maing some high powered homebrew unaccessible in 2.6/2.5

AND with 1.5, u dont need to have GTA do you?

Downgraders are supposed to downgrade the psp. This program doesn't do it. Even if it's just a "downgrader" in progress, DON'T call it a downgrader. People are gonna think otherwise and use it.

ALSO, A lot of people DON'T read the text or have limited english comprehension. Easy Solution? DON'T give a link to the downlaod on the front page and force people to read description after the jump. THERE ARE TONS OF PEOPLE GOING TO DOWNLOAD TIHS BECAUSE OF IT BEING TOP JUMP and the word "Download" at the bottom.

ANOTHER STUPID MISTAKE BY PSPUPDATES

Actually, I've had a similar experience. A friend of mine had an American PSP that he'd upgraded to 1.5 from 1.0, but didn't play for a few months and left it "sleeping." The battery died completely, and when we charged it, it'd been reset to factory settings. He had to reconfigure it, etc. and the firmware version was back to 1.0.

I have a white Japanese PSP that came with 1.5. I haven't played it in a while; it'd be interesting to see how much truth there is to this story. The only variable in it is whether or not my friend had really updated to 1.5 (he wasn't part of the homebrew scene, so that sort of thing doesn't stand out much to him). Perhaps he just couldn't remember.

im kinda wondering whether this will be possible with 2.70 soon, just seems a tad strange that not long after 2.70 was released 2.71 came.... could be wrong a 2.70 may never be exploited. saying that top hackers working on psp were saying they werent going to try looking for further exploits after gta hack was found as it wasnt possible. i seriously cant see fanjita working on an iso loader... after all an iso loader will pretty much kill psp sales. id only want homebrew for a few things. pdf reader, snes emu, mega drive emu and n64 if it fully takes shape. but at the mo im happy with my psp at 2.70 and im sure sony will hopefully get there ***** together and put alot of things right if another huge huge exploit is released.after the constant battle with homebrewers. itd be cool for them to have a small part of the system which could allow for emu's and the like. if u cant win em....join em kinda attitude

The reason that the system version said "1.00" was because the downgrader works on the principal of changing the PSP version number.

It puts it at 1.0, and since the 1.5 eboot only checks the version number, the eboot initiated, thus allowing you to downgrade.

very simple

What is really happening is the following: I think this "downgrader" tries to fool people so they brick their psp and force them to buy the U.P. This is because the kernel 2.6 was dicovered and that changed the way that the people think about the U.P and since more and more were made and packed..., I know it because I worked near them.......

Belive it if you want, but only I and few more people that made the chip know this

It's Just a trick so that the users that bricked their PSPs are forced to buy the U.P

I believe you "has" some bad english yourself. But then again, if I'm going to try being a Grammar Nazi, I'll be here for a good long while.

Back to the topic, I really hope this pans out. Booting GTA to run 50% of the homebrew available got old in about three days. My 2.6 needs some love.

Ugh, all you retards...

I like the way PSPUpdates called in a downgrader. It means some people (I read two or three "omg i dnled this wo rding wot it did now my psp wnt turn on!!!!1111") who are stupid enough to download without reading the post and/or instructions get a bricked psp. Idiots.

Like some guy said, if a website says "Look this is a virus. DON'T DOWNLOAD IT. IT'LL HURT YOUR PC", you're going to get some fools who download it anyway. It's not pspupdates' fault.

Talk about natural selection at it's best.

If I understood corecly downgrader first format NAND chip and then starts to write files. Isn' t it possible just overvrite files? without format. so we can owerwrite most important boot files in the end. if somethinf fails its there same chanse that PSP not bricket, like it is whet it just formatet.

Sorry for my english! ;)

Yes, you'll need to upgrade to 2.6 WHEN this is an actual downgrader, but as it is you will brick your PSP by running this.

DON'T use the Network Update feature on the PSP, as this will ugprade you to the most current version (2.71 or whatever) and you won't be able to downgrade.

http://psp-hacks.com (and probably here, I don't know) will have a copy of the 2.6 EBOOT.PBP file.

With all the good emulators coming out now, does anyone know if they can port MUGEN to the PSP?

MUGEN is a fighting engine which lets you download characters and backgrounds from any fighting game. Afterwards, you can make the characters fight eachother.

(Eg. King of Fighters vs. Street Fighter, or to be specific, RYU ( Street FighterII ) vs. Sub-Zero (Mortal Kombat 3)

Anyone up to it???

Dark_Alex only released the binary files for the version 0.2 of the donwdater.

Have a look at www.pspbrew.com, you will find that yoshihiro confirmed that "1) There was a very critical error: i forgot mkdirs!! It was IMPOSSIBLE that it could work in this manner.", and thid critical error was addressed on the v0.3 of the downdater.

Therefore all who said the downgrader worked are completely full of sh*te (and excuse my yorkshire O;-)) and those are fully responsible for all the psp which bricked yesterday for encouraging people to believe that there was a chance for the downgrader to work. The coder clearly stated that the program was experimental and that was "

To be used at your own risk. It is an UNTESTED software!"

In the meantime just be patient and wait for a working and secure version of the downgrader. Currently they are testing and improving v0.4. Sources can be found in the address above. Anyone with the knowledge can cooperate with them. Expect some news soon. I´d say a few days but don´t hold your breath on it.... At least there´s still hope :-)

At this point in time there is like a 20 percent success rate and take into consideration those self proclaimed successfull downgraders may be lieing just to try and seem cool because they never get laid and have no self esteem.

Ok this downgrader only seems to work with older psp.

The new motherboards the NEW psp you bought for the store prolly and most likely have some type of block on them so just like the U.P. Chip where some psps work OLD ONES! You can downgrade. This only makes sense.

What xbins said has to be true and noticed while reading some comments some people successfully downgraded. Those are Prolly People who Had 1.5 But updated there firmwareSZ so.. In my conclusion I would have to see that If u Previously had 1.5 fw 2.0 fw and ur mother board is older one u can use this DeV and it will work most likely.. YOU CAN DOWNGRADE YOUR 2.5 2.6! GL
