One of the commentors on our frontpage once said, "If the PSP is the Matrix, then Dark_AleX is Neo." And going by the latest developments, it wouldn't be very far from the truth. A few months ago, the PSP scene was "dying". Although homebrew development had been going strong, it still felt like we were going nowhere. New firmwares, blocked homebrew...It had become a regular game. Then came some cracking times (pun intended ;), with the wave of exploits from people like Hitchhikr and NOPX86, and many many more.The "scene" was resurrected within a few days, and look where we are today! And keeping it going strong is none other than Dark_AleX. If you've found it difficult to use the downgrader, with all the messing around with dumps, or if you've been left out because you couldn't find a dump, Dark_AleX has just made all of it a piece of cake. Now no messing around with dumps, checking to see if it's the correct one. The latest downgrader by Dark_AleX allows you to downgrade your 2.71 PSP to any version upto 1.5.
For the TA-082 owners, the lowest you can go is 2.50. Do not try to downgrade below that, your PSP will brick 100%. Please make sure that you're not running a TA-082 before trying to downgrade below 2.50.
So how does it work? Well, all you need is Dark_AleX's 2.71 Homebrew Enabler Rev.C, and the EBOOT.PBP file of the firmware you want to downgrade to. So you can downgrade from a 2.71 to just about every other firmware including 1.50,2.0,2.01,2.50 and 2.60. And luckily for everyone here, those files can be shared legally. Plus, you can simply download them off our server here. Just select the update file of the firmware you want to downgrade to, and slap the files on your PSP's memory stick. Below is a list of firmwares which we recommend in case you're downgrading. Just click on the respective version to download it.

1.50 - 2.0 - 2.01 - 2.50 - 2.60
Instructions:
- Download Homebrew Enabler for FW 2.71 using the Link below.
- Follow the instructions here to first flash the Homebrew Enabler on your 2.71 FW
- Once done, reboot your PSP and run the Homebrew Enabler using the Photo Menu.
- Now simply extract the files in the downgrader archive below to your PSP and paste the EBOOT.PBP file of the updater into the PSP/GAME/UPDATE folder.
- Now just run the updater using the Game menu!
Here's what Dark_AleX had to say:
"This downgrader lets a psp running firmware 2.71 and HEN C to downgrade to any version from 1.50-2.60, or even reflash the 2.71 version. This downgrader is safer, faster, and a lot easier to use than the previous downgraders. It also makes a clean firmware install, since this time there is a format of flash0 (just like sce updaters do). A firmware dump is not needed, only the eboot.pbp of an update.
Ta-082 users can downgrade to 2.70/2.60/2.50. TA-082 users, DO NOT downgrade below 2.50.
The program is finished and working. Only a bit more of testing is done and it will be released in a couple of hours more or less."
So all of you who've been waiting for a simple solution, I don't believe there can be one simpler than this. If you're still on 2.5/6, you can safely update to 2.71 and either wait it out for more homebrew, or downgrade to 1.5...But looking at all these developments, I feel that 2.71 might just just replace 1.50 as the golden firmware soon. This was beta Matrix, the real one is 2.80. Dark_AleX go for it! ; D
..until PSPs start shipping from the factory with 2.8 (if they haven't already), any PSP bought today can do pretty much anything.
TA-082 can run devhook and emulate 1.5, so basically there's little difference in having that or true 1.5 (which I have).

dax...incredible. the hb scene is forever grateful for all of your useful and non-bs releases. where was this before? also, is there a possibility that this may be used on 1.5 psp's as an addition to PoC custom firmware? it would be a great failsafe to update then downgrade so easily using a eboot instead of a fw dump in case of a recovery menu brick scenario. just an idea. again...incredible work. gracias.

You make it sound like these things are easy to make and can be done in a matter of minutes. Exploring and hacking 2.8 with the extra security or different protection it has will take more time.

No, TA-082 cannot be downgraded to 1.5. It isn't really necessary anymore as 2.71 can run devhook, and therefore emulate 1.5 for all of your homebrew needs.

My second question is, why was firmware 2.71 released? I know that firmware 2.81 for example was released to take care of the tiff exploit problem.
My third question is, why are so many things possible with firmware 2.71? I would think that it would be easier to hack the firmware before that, which is 2.70?

Um wtf? Why will the 2.71 firmware replace 1.5? I don't get it! This just looks like a downgrader, what's the point of upgrading to 2.71 so I can downgrade again? Or does this emulate 1.5? Ugh >_
The title is kind of misleading although theres a warning in red it should read "now downgrade any psp firmware from 2.71" instead of "downgrade to any firmware from 2.71".

So I'm wondering
Can I update to 2.71 by manually downloading the EBOOT for 2.71? Or will it automatically try to upgrade me to 2.81?
Then from 2.71 I can go right down to 1.5 right?

What if for higher firmware one of the modchip/swapdisk companies could make a umd that plays folder _________ on the mem stick so you can then downdate.

NO! You cannot downgrade a TA-82 to a 1.5, you WILL brick it. Just use HEN C to emulate 1.5, and you can do everything that a 1.5 can do. If you try downgrading your brother's psp to 1.5, he is going to be out $200.

i would like to know why it says that a ta-082 psp cant be downgraded past 2.50. there were ta-082 motherboards running 1.51 firmware in asia. i thought that the ipl for 1.5 is the only one that was blocked on ta-082's.
I took my 1.5 and upgraded to 2.71. I installed the HenC. I added the downgrader and the 1.5 eboot renamed to UPDATE.PBP. I then ran the UPDATE X.Y.whatever and got the same corrupt settings hit O to continue that I expected. The instructions were clear and well written. Dark_Alex, many good feelings to you and yours.

The update screen isn't a base update graphic. The progress is a percent complete and reboots. The hit "O" afterwards does apply, though.

Let's see...if you're able to get back down to 2.50 from 2.71...this thing may not be all that useless. If 0okm didn't drop the dev of the 2.50 softdown to 1.50, then this thing could come in some real use.

Moron, don't you know fanjita is working on something for 2.5/2.6 to enable homebrew on them, he said something about it doing the same stuff as DAX's method but by different means/method, possibly a PERMANENT one, so you coud downgrade to that FW and have permanent HW access from there.

The guide on this page misses that you need to rename EBOOT.PBP file to UPDATE.PBP and then put it in the UPDATE folder.

This is only a suggestion, but it may work as a means to downgrade 2.8 to firmware 2.71. Basically what we need someone to do is edit the 2.81 firmware update so that instead of flashing the firmware 2.81 contents it flashes firmware 2.71's content, but keeps the part of the 2.81 firmware that makes it run, so that it will be accepted by fw2.8 psp's, as they will think it's the proper upgrade. Its only a suggestion, and may not work, but there's every chance that it could.

Use Dark_AleX's HEN Revision C , then Use 2.71 HEN compatible Devhook to emulate FW 1.5. It works on mine.
it worked on mine all you have to do is install the homebrew enabler and do everything it says in the readme go to the game folder and start the update and now i have 1.5!!!!!!!!

At the time firmware 2.8 came out there was little in the way of downgrades for the higher firmwares, and no prospects of ever running homebrew on 2.71. So lots of people, myself included, updated believing they would never be able to run homebrew anyway, so they may as well upgrade.

yes, this works on IC6001 because only IC1003 are ta-082 and above motherboards, any others are not. IC6001 is a ta-081 motherboard, so it works. ^^

I guess it's just your luck.. because there was no need to downgrade to 2.5 at all.. it was only meant as a proof of concept for ta-082ers.. and the restriction of not being able to update to 2.71 is because of your motherboard.. too bad, I guess.. To everyone else out there, thanks to SAM, you're going to stop yourself from doing stupid things. ^^

Rename the 2.71 EBOOT.PBP to UPDATE.PBP and place it in a folder called UPDATE in PSP/GAME of your memory stick. it should work, if not tell me.
because i dint know about this homebrew stuff till now and regret updating i think all 2.8rs have learnt there lesson just plz find a way to downgarde 2.80 then there will be no complaints about 2.80 thanks

I tried every thing, formatting memory stick, reset to original, even try to upgrade to 2.60 first, still same damn message. Someone Please Help!!!!

No Sam...I think if u forgot to plugin the external power to yr psp when u attemp to upgrade, yr psp will prompt u that error message u mentioned. So plug in the charger, using external power with the battery inside & u can upgrade as normal. Hope I can help.

if your psp is factory 2.60 dont downgrade it wont brick your psp but you cant upgrade again like number 129
if it was 2.50 factory feel free to downgraade to 2.50 as you can upgrade again

Hey i just recently updated to 2.71 from 2.6, and now that after i have installed hen C . and put in the 2.5 dowgrader, but everytime i go into the dwongrader, it says, " cannot find UPDATE.PBO", and i have alredy renamed the eboot file and placed it in.
I successfully ran The homebrew enabler, but when I try to run the 2.5 updater i get the typical you have 2.71 and don't need 2.5 message..
it doesn't upgrade for me. I run the downgrader, and it does the PSP game splash, then black, then it reboots and I still have 2.71..

I've used it before but re-upgraded to 2.71 to use the browser now I've got the exact same things enabled, exact same settings the right homebrew launcher and roughly 4000kb left on a 512 mb memory stick, I've checked 4 times now to make sure that everything is in it's right place and it is but for some reason it won't let me run the program again.

Dark_Alex has made a homebrew enabler and downdater for every firmware that needed it, now all of the nOObz like me who upgraded while still clueless are screwed until Dark_Alex makes another homebrew enabler and downdater for the evil psp firmware 2.81. I HATE FIRMWARE 2.81, (the only reason i got it was 4 flash playback). Maybe a flash exploit?? Hope so.

I was bored, i risked my 1.5 but i was like whatever i upgraded to 2.71 installed the hen(C) Homebrew Enabler and then i did the downgrade and it worked prefectly fine.

I got the eboot.pbp remaned it to update.pbp, and the thing still wont run! In my menu, I click on it and it just shows the startup screen, then it goes black and then goes back to the menu again. What am I doing wrong?!?

Hey, have beeen watching and reading the forums and waiting for just this perfect downgrader to appear. Just one question though, do i have to upgrade from my 2.5 to the 2.71 firmware before i can d/grade to 1.50 with this new Dark Alex method or can i do this straight on a 2.5 , also is it okay to format the duo stick in the psp and then install the files directly onto it from my slot on Vaio lappy, then run on the psd.

Yes, although you needn't use this Generic Downgrader. Simply use the recovery system built into the firmware. See the readme that came with the firmware for details, but it's easy.

A 2.80 downgrader should be out soon. Ever wonder why Sony released 2.81 fw? It's not because of those useless tiff "games". It's because they saw a potential downgrader. Just don't upgrade past 2.80, and you'll be ok.

We need 2.8 to be downgraded work on that more and let 2.71 be for a while. All of us 2.8 fw people are stuck in the gray zone with no new tiff games and a lack of a downgrader or ebooter. Cmon guys you can do it I know you can.
I did it! Someone in my one of my classes updated my PSP with a game that required a higher firmware. I was mighty pissed but I came home and searched the net for a solution. I came across this and took the dive! And it worked successfully! Easy instructions, quick, and most of all...functional. I'd recommend it again. If you need help. Message my myspace.

..I had a PSP 2.50,ready to be downgraded.
Then my sister took my PSP, and found out that she could't play her PSP game on it.. and updated it all the way to 2.82.(she's now bleeding on the floor.) Any how, i can't use my PSP for the purpose i bought it for... Play Emulator games..
