Dark_AleX update of the week: 3.40 OE-A and 3.30 OE-A' |

Within the past few days, PSP owners were kept on the edge of their seats by reports of FW 3.40 in South Korea and in Japan. Well, soon enough, the latest firmware version for the Sony handheld reached North American shores, and without fail, coders and homebrew devs set to work on it immediately. And who else would keep the ball rolling but Dark_AleX?Well, now that the whole community is in motion again, the great DAX is leading the pack and has just produced a couple of more updates. The first is the release of custom firmware 3.40 OE-A, and for this update, he notes the following improvements that were made from 3.30 OE-A to 3.40 OE-A:
- Updated from 3.30 firmware to 3.40
- Security patch: Fixed a bug that has been in all 3.XX OE, that caused random data to be written to a location in lcdc.prx or (in worst case) emc_sm.prx ram space.
- Autboot that is missing since 3.03 OE-C has been reimplemented.
- Improvements in the flasher. It will now generate also the flash1 directories, and it will check that the dxar is the correct for this update, so no more bricks by accidentally using other DATA.DXAR.
- Security patch: Fixed a bug that has been in all 3.XX OE, that caused random data to be written to a location in lcdc.prx or (in worst case) emc_sm.prx ram space.
- Autboot that is missing since 3.03 OE-C has been reimplemented.

great finally a OE updated without people saying "FIRST FIRST FIRST!!!" great now running 3.40 OE-A both are the same but 3.40 is a firmware higher XD
Please add this under info for 3.40: Note about pops. I recommend people to backup their savedata before proceeding to change them (Sony has changed the savedata format, and they force you to change the format in 3.40 if you want to play them). If a plugin to load previous firmwares pops appear, the savedata will have to be in the old format for those firmwares, that's why it is better to have a backup of them. Psx savedatas are in /PSP/SAVEDATA/[code of game]
Everyone this is not an official SONY firmware. That means that it could have unstability issues that you may not know about. If you read about the security that fixed the bug in the previous OE's, you should note that it fixes a bug that could cause files to be written in ram space. No one was informed of this when the programmer released these malicous codes. If you keep updating to unknown possibilities you will surely render your psp useless with a voided warranty. So please have common sense and upgrade to official SONY firmwares only. Sincerely, J.P. Hendrick

Wow and I just finished customizing my 3.30 oe-a!Thanks Dax for giving the option of upgrading to 3.30 oe-a' !!!!! It would be a shame to have to Flash the mods all over again. Im problably not jumping to 3.40 oe-a until a game requires it.

i must have done something wrong and ended up with a brick, but recovery mode saved my psp's life, i went back to 3.30 oe a' and everything works well. thank you, Dark_Alex, for all your hard work, especially for your amazing recovery mode.

you can use custom icons on 3.30OEA....go to Max Consoles and search for custom icons in their forums. I am running the Black32 Encore 4 on 3.30OEA with NO problems...100% works

I noticed that he said "autoboot" and said its been missing since 3.03 OE-C. Wasn't that missing autobot function in 3.03 OE-C which prevented us form having Cintros on anything above 3.03 OE-B? If so does that mean that Cintros will now work on 3.40 OE-A?

Well I guess they neglected to say if POPs and custom icons are supported yet with 3.40 OE. I don't want to upgrade till I know POP's is at least supported. Has anybody heard anything yet about POPs support with 3.40 OE?

Pops never stopped working in the first place guys. It was the loader that you used to load old versions of pops that didn't work. It still doesn't, but considering FF7 runs perfect, I have no complaints.

Try updating using the official sony 3.40 fw and when it is updating pull the battery pack out. And if that doesn't work, try throwing it out of a car window while driving on the freeway.

I updated to 3.30 oe a' and I found custom 1)battery icon works 2)volume/ loading icon works web browser does not work and goes to the blue death screen (aka that blue screen with the words in every language that tells you to press circle) how do I use the web browser

I have just updated to this new 3.40 custom fw from the good-old 3.30 OE-A, and i've noticed, that I can't copy down the config.se file from the psp's f0 memory to my pc via usb when i'd like to make a backup from the flash. What can cause it?

I just want to express my appreciation for Dark_AleX making these. He is literally a psp hero. I am still at 3.03. I am waiting untill he makes one where you can use psx eboots from lower firmwares. But still amazing job.

Hey Guys, After converting my PSX save files and loading FFVII the game crashes out after about 5min of play, or at the beginning of a battle scene. If you are having these same types of issues, please post here. BE SURE TO BACKUP SAVE FILES BEFORE PLAYING PS1 GAMES!!!
why do people want to brick their psp just because they have 3.11 . Did i miss something.
I'm trying to figure out what I need to do to put a custome firmware on a psp that has 3.30 official firm. First off just from reading all the posts ((I know), why did you do that, are you stupid?) No I am not stupid, I had the psp sent to me while I was over seas when I got it my little brother had already gone through the upgrade process (to late to cry over spilt milk). Now what steps do I need to go through, and please only people with the ability to comment with respect and human morals say anything. I'm confused enough as is. Not to be rude, if I came across as such I am sorry. I just really need some help, before I "brick" this thing because I don't know what I'm doing.
Unfortunately, you are not able to put custom firmware at this time... there is no downgrader for 3.30 official, which is needed to install custom firmware. One may be made in the future, but no one knows exactly when... you may be waiting a long time.. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news..

I just upgraded from 3.03 oe c to 3.40 oe a and it worked. I then started to customize my PSP back the way it was before with custom waves, background and tops menu and that thats when everything went wrong. I got nothing but a black screen at start up. I went to recovery but couldn't recover, i guess because I've never used recovery before and didn't know what to do. I didn't have a recovery folder in my games folder so I used toggle usb and created a recovery folder in PSP/GAMES. I then began franticly looking for a recovery eboot and placed this 3.30 oe a recovery eboot in. I then entered recovery menu and tried to recover, screen flashed black and showed me the recovery menu again. I then tried to restart but still, nothing but a black screen. What should I do now?

dont thinkj u can unless theres a new update...or look for some brickers programs. Having a brick PSP aint going to solve your problems, most of the time they dont let u return bricked PSP especially game stores and people who knows bout brick psps. But there are some stores like costco that will let u return it and if its like that they dont need a problem with the iteem.

If you upgraded and all you get is a black screen and you can access usb still have you tried hitting the screen button. Mine will always go black after an update...screen turns off. one push of the screen button and all is well. The browser does work. If you get the blue screen with all the error message etc that means you didnt reset all settings. reset your settings to default and all should be fine.

Either try flashing back to 1.50, or try recovering your flash0 (if you backed it up). I've never had this problem, so I don't know the best solution, but it is worth a shot.
...with custom XMB and everything is working perfectly :) Looks like 3.03OE-C is no longer the "Golden" firmware, as 3.40 OE-A now does everything and more.
For those who got the blue screen when opened the internet browser format flash1, NOT FLASH0!!! Open recoverymode/advaced/toogleusb (flash1) and remove everysibgle file i made it and it went to birth mode and now even 802.11g work!!! hope this info was usefull and remember dont mesh anything up with flash0...
Your recovery questions: For recovery, dark_alex simply made it so if you DONT MESS WITH the hacked 1.50 bootstrap file, then you will be able to enter recovery application using the "R" button!! After you are in the recovery menu, you are able to load -ANY- EBOOT in the PSP/RECOVERY (i think thats the path) directory. There is no "recovery point" or anything. by allowing you to load this eboot, you can reflash your PSP to a FRESH OE system of your choice. If your PSP does not boot, but you can boot to recovery, we call it "semi-bricked". without this recovery menu your PSP would be USELESS (bricked) in any other case. Lastly, when you install ANY FIRMWARE. the -first- thing the installers do, is ERASE flash0. this includes the recovery application! to CLARIFY about the custom ICONS: to customize your PSP, you MUST HAVE 3.03. if you dont have 3.03 and have any higher firmware, you must "inject" the 3.03 custom icons into the 3.10+ files. this is done with RCOedit latest version. (earlier versions had a bug)

nothing bad happened with my psp after updating but, nothing essentially good either. After the update, and the use of Flash Agent H1 (to free up space on mem) i cant remember whether it was apparent before or after use of flash agent. In any case, the PSP Spot, and PortableTV that is bundled with foreign firmwares was actually showing up under my network icon. i was like, oh thats nice, i started them.. they worked fine. Then after messing with the flash for some custom changes, they disappear .... im not entirely upset.. just it was nice seeing some BIGGER changes.. xD Nothing bad happened after noticing there strange disappearance xD

learn your terminology, its not called downgrading. thats a term that means going from a higher firmware to a lower version.... in this case there is no firmware higher than 3.4 so its impossible to downgrade.... it would be upgrading

D_A doesnt make firmwares... he hacks them. he hasnt *created* ANYTHING. its all hex edited from sonys official updates. in addition, sony doesnt update to fight hackers, they update to fix and enhance their firmware. they have never fought hackers with anything other than updating their encryption keys, and fixing security holes.

Just uped to 3.40oea - everything went smooth - and infact everything works, apart from the browser - gives the blue-multiligual-screen, says to press "o" but nothing happens for some 30seconds - then shuts off. Always the same thing whenever i try? Any help would be nice!

So, while upgrading there should be an firmwareinstaller-eboot in psp\recovery and in case of a brick i can simply install it with the recovery menu? Or what do the last sentences mean?

asd, from my understanding recovery mode has a few feature, the main one being the ability to load a 1.5 update eboot in case of failure in some cases allowing you to revert back to a 1.5 fw, it also has a few more features such as usb mode and such, seriously everyone should be more helpful, all these flamers are the reason the psp scene is dying fast. nobody wants to listen to the ***** anymore and all the good devs are leaving/have left because of all of it.

hi I have a psp with custom firmware 330 oe a, when I try to upgrade it to 340 oe a I get a blank screen and my psp shuts off. I used another psp to run the oeupdatmaker to generate the dax.daxr file and loaded the oeflasher on my psp to see if It would work that way and It did not. all my ISO games work fine and my homebrew too, but why can't I load the oe update? I had heard about a bug where files were written to flash or ram could this stop it from running, please help me get to 340 oe a thanks
Since firmware 3.11 there are problems with some tracks in WipEout Pure. Some leagues will crash after specific races. And multiplayer will crash with some extension packs as well. That's the reason why I'm still on 3.03 C. Does anybody know, if this problems are also existent with this modified firmware?

I'd say you're stupid? Sony upgrades to fight hackers and tighten the security to make your PSP a non "homebrew-able", shiny brick. They fight off the hackers to prevent them from using ISO's and playing homebrew games. They want us to buy their games, not download them for free. What, are you a Sony Fanboy? The white psps automaticly load the jap firmware keys and those icons are built into all firmwares, us/jap. if you goto recovery and fake a US region it will take those away without any harmfull side effects. also custom icons won't work unless you fake the region. hope that helps

No mater what you want to do, the best option is to first downgrade to 1.5, from there you can do whatever you want. The OE firmwares are customized by Dark-Alex so that you can have all the features of the new firmware, such as psx games in 3.03oe-a+, and the capabilities of 1.50 such as homebrew. I hope this helps.
You don't need to do all of that. You just need to go and reset settings to default through the psps xmb.

So, I'm trying to follow the Readme on the 3.40 OE-A and I get to the part where you have to execute the program (I have to go the PSP/GAME150 route) and I can't figure how to do that. The PSP isn't recognising the GAME150 folder. What am I doing wrong? Please help?

Hey when sony hires dark alex to work for them, Then I might try to use an offical sony bios. sony wants so much control that It would and has "insulted inteligent coders, decoders, and said you can not use your psp to play games that you allready own, or have owned and were stolen. also selling the unit with rumers that it would be capable of running emulaters. and lets face it all the psp games suport violence or are so pathetic your seven year old would do well to stay away. here a few ways to brick a psp downgrade TA-082 mother board to 1.00 drop in watter use as tire stop take it apart and short it out remove the battery when it is updating and if that dont work send a high voltage surge into the usb port. burry it in the back yard remove the internal battery off the mother board and cut the traces on the internal circuit board but why would you want a brick you need help why not wait till they make a downgrader or pawn it off to a friend or your sister and let her brick it trying to figure out how to use it!!!

I found flash agent reconises 3.40 OE-A as 3.03 OE-C for some reason so you can use that to remove unnessacary files in order to install stuff.

When i use the oeupdatemaker to make the dxar file, i get a message that says "wrong file (3) in 3.40". Whtas that supposed to mean. Why doesnt DAX just put up the update instead of the bull***** necessary to make the update! HELP ME GUYS.

For those of you having issues with network features (like wb browser) go into advanced mode on the recovery menu and turn on flash 1 usb. On your pc clear it out. It worked on my jap psp and all network features work including the jap only ones. NOTE: WHEN YOU CLEAR IT YOU WILL LOOSE YOUR SETTINGS AND HAVE TO INPUT THEM AGAIN

I always backup my falsh0/1 after upgrading DAX's firmwares and I have noticed that for 3.40 OEA the flash1 file "config.se" cannot be copied over to my backup folder on my laptop. Windoze reports the following error when attempting: "Cannot copy config: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". I have flashed 3.40 OEA twice (from scratch) and same result. Never had this problem with 3.03, 3.10, 3.30. So I am wondering if $ony is trying some sort of file protection technique???? All other files in flash0 and flash1 copy fine. Thoughts?

Make sure the 3.40 update is called 340.PBP and also that the update is 3.40 not something else like 3.30.

AGG i put custom icons on and semi brick o well i just fixed the topmenu plugin so I guess that there is no way to change icons in this version that kinda makes me mad as some people here said they did fine.

I have a problem when I enter to recovery menu and then to configuration, it freezzes and then psp goes off, advance and everything else in recovery menu is fine except configuration, someone else have the same problem, is there a solution? i reinstalled the firmware and even 3.10 oe-a but it didn't work either

I have never played any psx games on my psp until I upgraded to 3.40 oe. So far i have gotten sotn, crono trigger, and final fantasy 6 to work. My only problem is when I save a game in ff6 and then try to load it, it always says load failed. The other two games save just fine. Anyone have a clue what i am doing wrong. Please help

i successfully upgraded to 3.40 oe a day or two after it came out. Had no problems with games or ripped DVDs video on the PSP. BUT, while playing Burnout Revenge last night, I was in a race (in the Factory series, I think) and as the time ticked down with the audible "bell" chiming at each second, the PSP went dead when the time got to zero. No power, can't turn it on with or without A/C adaptor, it was fully charged before playing and I played for about 30 minutes before it flatlined on me. I don't get any sign of life whatsoever: no "power" light response, not even a flicker. Any ideas of what could have killed it? I unplugged it and left the battery out overnight and this am still a big no-go. help.

DAX, we need downgraders. :"( When I was first getting into homebrew, I didn't think before I upped mine to 2.00 and I was like "WTFBBQH4X!?!?!?" I saw the custom firmware and thought "Fine, I just wont run homebrew." So I upped. Then BAM! Downgraders! BUT I WAS TOO HIGH IN THE FIRMWARE.

I updated to custom firmware 3.40 OE-A and now my prx plug-ins aren't working. I've downgraded and then upgraded back and they still aren't working. Did the prxs get corrupted? Or is anyone else having this problem? Also the icon that is supposed to be the Recovery update isn't showing. It says it is corrupt data. I thought it showed it on the earlier custom firmwares but maybe it didn't.
