Dark_Alex impostor site brings bricks to homebrew *Update*

Ó

Beware the brickerLet's call this a public service announcement. If you're a part of the homebrew community">homebrew community, then you know who Dark_Alex is. To put it simply, make sure you know you're getting your Dark_Alex homebrew goodness from a trusted site, or you could end up in the clutches of a nasty bricker.

According to the MaxConsole forums, a site called dark-alex.com is posing as the official site for Dark_Alex homebrew. Unsuspecting fellows will find the site to be an exact double of Dark_Alex's, hosting files with identical names, including the newly-created Homebrew Enabler Revision D (HEN D) and the 2.71 SE-C customized firmware. These files, however, are fakes.

After a comparison of the file sizes on the impostor site to the ones from Dark_Alex's website, it's been determined that these aren't the same files to begin with. Forum-goers are also noting that the files are PSP brickers, so be warned.

To be sure you get the files you need, pick it up from Dark_Alex's actual homepage at dax.lan.st, grab it from our download site as soon as we cover it, or check the QJ forums for tutorials and links to the authentic websites direct from homebrew devs and gurus. Thanks to Hardrive for pointing this out to us, and may karma's army of cannibalistic hamsters bring swift retribution to the pretender in our midst.

UPDATE: Whoever is up to this little bit of nuttiness is really starting to pour on the confusion. Dark-Alex.com is now down, and guys from the forums are offering scattered reports of other sites acting as either impostors or just generally adding to the confusion. Dark-Alex.info is one of them, as well as dax.st.

For the time being, access to Dark_Alex's webpage should be made through dax.lan.st. While we're not entirely sure whether dax.st and dax.lan.st are the same site, the one with the ".lan" is the Dark_Alex address homebrewers on our forums use, if they aren't downloading from our own downloads page.

» It's COOL to hate the PSP...

A rather long read, but if you're going to argue, please take the time to read my rant:

Every time I mention my PSP to a fellow DS gamer at school, he immediately responds with scorn. Strange.

For example: one day at school, I was talking to my friend, who got his DS around the same time as I, about random RPGs and the like. Somehow I fit the PSP into the mix and he immediately retaliated with "PSP sucks!" What the hell...? I asked him why, and he game me some BS about how "EVERYONE knows that the DS is better than the PSP." The argument was forced to stop because my ***** of an English teacher yelled at him when we started class. Funny thing is, this same friend of mine said he wanted a PSP last year. What caused him to change his mind?

Then, today, on the bus returning home, a little incident occurred. I was talking to another friend about mp3 players, and his iPod nano, which cost him somewhere around $100 or $200, so he says, only holds 1 GB. Naturally, I tell him what a ripoff it is, and mention that even my PSP can hold more than that. This must have sparked a synapse in his annoying closed mind, and he repeated the phrase I've heard so many times. "PSP sucks."

The rest of the bus trip and a stop at the corner where his street is was spent arguing. My arguments were that first: he doesn't have a DS YET, or a PSP, then emulation and multimedia make the PSP a great buy when you know what you're doing, then that I have put in way more time with my 400+ hours on my PSP and >50 with my DS, and last: that ratings do NOT reflect the quality of the game. He said he played Mercury and Lumines and they both weren't good, but he played MGA and he said he liked it a lot. I asked him where he got the idea that the PSP sucks, and he said through ratings from EGM and Game Informer (ew...). The argument eventually led to me telling him to not knock the PSP until he gets games for it and does research on it, and he was okay with that after I said that I've had a DS before he knew what it was, and 12 games for it.

But I digress. My main question is: At what point in time did the majority of gamers decide to have this "accepted opinion" or "proven fact," as my bus friend put it, that the PSP doesn't offer anything more than crappy multimedia and good graphics? Was it when the DS picked up last year after its ***** of a drought, and the PSP didn't get much better? Was it when DS gamers found that the PSP has a lot of ports? Was is when the Sony decided to stop homebrew?

The PSP was once, I agree, worse than the DS. It is not now. Great homebrew, multimedia capabilities, online play that is much better than the DS, and all-around more games that are worth a real gamer's time. The DS offers a gimmick, over-done franchises, a mess of great games all together. They're both great systems for different people. Why can't anyone accept that?

I thought that the idea that DS>PSP was only something that went on here, and casuals don't (and shouldn't) care about something so minuscule.

However, it's suddenly become a fad to hate the PSP (not Sony, as much as I'd like to see that happen). At this point Nintendo has to do nothing; their fans sell their products more than they do!

I just felt I needed to get this off my chest and on virtual paper. Discuss if you want....or not.
