Here comes the tutorial:
Requirement:
- PlayStation Portable (Firmware 1, 1.5, 2.0, 2.01, 2.5, or 2.60). On PSPs with firmware 2.0+, eLoader is required, as well as GTA for 2.01+.
- At least 4MB free space on your memory stick for the customized fonts.
- FileAssistant 0.4 (I only found v0.3 in our old file section.)
- A Hex editor program on your PC (like UltraEdit32 or WinHex)
1. Copy files from your firmware
To mod the font of your PSP, you will have to first export 2 files from your flash1. You can use FileAssistant to do so. Run it, go to Disk, and change to PSP BIOS 1. Then enter folder "registry", select "copy", and copy both system.dreg and system.ireg to your memory stick.
2. Edit the registry file
Copy the system.dreg and system.ireg file onto your PC. Open system.dreg with a Hex editor program. Run a search for "flash0:", you will be able to see some text like "flash0:/font" to be found. Then, type the directory onto this text to overwrite it. In this tutorial, we use "ms0:/fontmod" for our own font. Type it in the Hex editor to overwrite the original text in the text field, and erase the remaining text with "00" in the hex field. And at last, save the file and copy them back onto an easy-to-find place on your memory stick.
3. Repair the registry file
Use fixupdreg3.exe to fix the registry files. Just copy the exe file to where the 2 registry files are in, and run it with a double click.
4. Get the font files ready
Copy the font files into ms0:/fontmod folder.
5. Write the customized registry files back
Run FileAssistant again. Find the system.dreg and system.ireg file, and copy them into your PSP BIOS 1. This step should be the most dangerous one in the whole process since we are now actually writing to the firmware. You may want to firmly plug in your power adapter or at least check the remaining battery life. Copying is fast, but you don't want to fail on this for god's sake. After copied the files, exit FileAssistant.
After exited FileAssistant, you will see the changes if you are using a different font then the original one. If you don't you may be using the same font with the original font of the PSP, or you may need to reboot the PSP system to let it take effect (just turn it ACTUALLY off and back on).
TeamOverload has released a customized font, which is enclosed with the package we are offering for download below. You will notice that your PSP system font is all italic after using the mod.
Alternative:
If you don't want to actually write this into your firmware, you can just try it with MPH's firmware launcher. Follow the steps above and stop after completed step 4. Instead of continuing to comply with the step 5, set up a normal firmware emulation and copy the modified system.dreg and system.ireg onto flash1/registry folder of your firmware files on your memory stick to overwrite the original ones there. Then start the firmware emulation. You will also be able to see the result of the mod! (My picture was actually taken in this way ;-))

wow.........could this possibly lead to kernal, flash0 access? cause im doing this when i get home from school lol.
This might not be big, changing fonts on your psp, but at least we can do so if we wish. This might just be a small part of what's to come. Who know's what we can change in that registry file. Changing icons, looks, effects, firmware version...? I think it's great that these guys found out about this, up to the next setting...

Sorry bud, I forgot to put the cygwin library. The package was updated and tested to be working. You can find the files in a folder inside the archive. Make sure you put the dll with the exe to make it run properly.

So after you've finished the process, if you delete the ms0:\fontmod folder will that break the psp??? I'm assuming the newly edited system.dreg now looks in this directory and not flash1?????

Edit the text in system.dreg from "ms0:/fontmod" back to "flash0:/font" and go through step 3 and 5. Your PSP should be back to the default state after that.
So FileAssistant 1.0 doesnt work with this guide ? I've tried to find .04 but can't find a download for it. In 1.0 I don't get the option to copy the proper files when I've selected them.

This is all off the memory stick, not the flash.

I've been getting mixed reviews about the process, but I can assure you that it works on 1.50 and 2.00
The best bet is to copy the font files over yourself. To get italic, swap the filenames of ltn0.pgf and ltn3.pgf (however you want to do it). For bold, swap ltn0 for ltn5, and for bold+italic, swap ltn0 for ltn7.

To those who said this is useless you must not be seing the bigger picture. This is the first step to understanding registry hacks more. Fonts first and who knows, firmware hacks in the future.

I just saw in my hex editor the system.dreg and it shows the web data of my psp, my infrastructure codes and all!!!!!!! i guess that we can now start making a downgrader or a new eloader with this.

Ok, just copy the original fonts form "flash1/fonts" to your mem stick for backup and then copy the modded font you want into that folder and now it will load that font. This also doesnt require you to edit those system.ireg/dreg files!
Ive come to this solution since I use many mem sticks and If you remove the meme stick the fotn is prolly gonna get screwed up and stuff

Maybe there should be some type of pictures explaing how everything is done, becuase we're playing around with flash here, not everyday normal homebrew. I myself am a bit lost, and I dont want to take the risk of bricking my psp.

this is madddddddd old, this came out before the downgrader, i love how pspupdates brings old useless topics back to life!!
as far as the old topics comming back to life. I'm glad it did because I missed it then maybe because I was out of town so this was a nice mod update for my since I love hacking my psp. Here is a link for those who need FileAssistant v.04. And please less hate and more support, if you have brought anything to the community then you would have such a bad attitude, like THE SFTU Guy and XxMxVxPxX.

Wow, this is pretty damn cool. Good thing I have 2.6 so I don't have a chance of bricking it =P
I like it though, the fonts are mad cool, and I got it working on the first try ^_^
Oh, and VInxent, thanks a lot for that link to FileAssistant v0.4, I couldn't find it for the life of me, that link really helped.
This is nice and all, but is it possible to convert say a "favorite" font for use with the psp?
Either that, or we are gunna have to wait for the developers to make different fonts, cuz no offence but i dont like da italics font.
The overall hack is great, mainly because its the FIRST cross firmware flash mod. ( Sadly not Flash0... )
No this is not a downgrader, it could reveal some secrets, but is not currently the same as a downgrader...

Well I followed your guide entirely, word for word with my PSP. Then I turned it off and back on after the last step only to find that it reset my PSP's settings but saving everything in my memory stick. In other words, I had to reset my passwords, background, nickname, time, etc. ALSO, I did not get any font changes at all. If you, the creator of this mod, have time on your hands to walk me through this step by step on AIM or MSN, feel free to IM me.

ok you do need FA v04 and it totally works exactly how you need to follow the directions.

Basically what you need to do is go into the flash1 and then the registry folder and copy those 2 files onto your MS (thru FA) then copy the font folder in flash0 to your MS (thru FA for a backup). After, exit FA and edit the system.dreg file in hex workshop like it says. then put the system.dreg and system.ireg files into the fixupreg3 folder (found in the .rar the fontmod came in) and run the exe in the fixupreg3 folder. copy the system.ireg and system.dreg folders back into your MS as well as the fontmod folder. go back into FA and copy the system.ireg and system.dreg files back to the registry folder you first got them in. When complete, hit home, and enjoy your fonts!
P.S. idunno what the crap about the cd parse thing in command prompt was about in step 9...i just used the fixupreg3.exe and it worked
Also, i recommend having the PSP plugged into AC adaptor because you are writing to your flash and you don't want battery to die while doing that!!! (trust me, i know ;)

^at the bottom of the page there is a ttf (the norm for fonts on windows) to pgf (font used in this hack) convertor...but i don't understand the directions. so if anyone wants to figure how to convert other ttf fonts (available at sites like 1001freefonts.com) then please let us know :)

I doubt it will do anything of that sort. if you dont trust them then just use flashmod then all your doing is putting your font files in place of the old ones nothing with replaceing the system.dreg and *****. It is much easier and more effecient to use flashmod because then your psp will always work, without flashmod what you are doing is telling your psp that the font files are in a diiferent location (the files originally are in f1:/font but you change it to ms0:/font) therefore when you try to turn on ur psp but there is no memory stick in or you dont have the font files on ur memory stick or even if you do and they are in the wrong location your psp will apear to be bricked but really its not it just cant find the font files. If you use flashmod you will not have this problem.
I can confirm that there is no way you can brick your PSP, unless you are stupid enough to somehow delete files from flash0 (the firmware partition, which cannot be written through fileassistant IIRC). The worst you'll get is a blue screen, for which the PSP will have to reset your settings. Anybody who says they've bricked their PSP with this is a liar.
This just bricked my psp. For real. The UMD loads but the menu screen is F*cked.

Does anyone have this problem where you can't properly shut off the psp when u are using the gta eloader, but have to take out the battery so it can shut off? For instance i had to take out the battery when i was done using file assistance becuause it wouldn't shut off.
