[Breaking News] 2.50/2.60 Downgrader - v5 Beta Released

Yes, you have read the title right - 2.50/2.60 Downgrader. Dark_Alex, along with Mathieulh and Yoshihiro from SonyXTeam, have released the first working 2.50/2.60 downgrader. Most credit goes to Dark_Alex (as said by Mathieulh) as he is the founder of the downgrader. Also, we would all like to give our thanks to Hitchhikr for the exploit that made this all possible. We have seen several betas over the past few days, several of which have been confirmed as non-working. However, just a few moments ago, Mathieulh released a beta version of the upcoming v5 of the downgrader. Dark_Alex is currently asleep as I am typing this, and thus cannot release the final version (non-beta). If you choose to use this downgrader, use it at your own risk!! This is still a beta version!! A lot of people are reporting success, but please, try at your own risk!

The IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is full of discussion about this downgrader and we are right there, getting every bit of information for you. The main discussions occur at Fanjita's channel (join #fanjita on Toc2rta). Now, you are probably wondering how the downgrader works after the previous attempts failed. Mathieulh says it best in the release thread - "It uses some Sony libraries found in the 1.50 updater to perform the most critical steps, the logical format of the flash, and the ipl writing. See technical details for more info about how it works." The technical details can be found in the release thread.

Now, you are all wondering - "Well, how the "hell" do I use this?" Here's your answer.

The downgrade process is separated between two people, a 1.50 user and you (2.50/2.60 user). The 1.50 user must own a 1.50 firmware PSP and will have to follow simple steps to obtain some files for you. The instructions are as follows.

Before downgrading, make sure you meet the following requirements -
Your PSP is not a TA-082 (If you do have this PSP version, it may result in a brick). [Find out if you have one!]

1.50 User Instructions

Copy the folders downhelper and downhelper% from the folder 1.50 HELPER folder to /PSP/GAME/ in your memstick.
Obtain the 1.50 update and put it in /PSP/GAME/UPDATE in your memstick. You may find the 1.50 update in our download site here.
Init the downhelper program.
It will dump your flash and some files from the updater eboot to the memstick. (These files are illegal under US copyright laws, so please do not distribute them in the comments or on our forums)
After that, the program will exit. You can now delete the updater from /PSP/GAME/UPDATE
You'll notice that you have a new folder in the root of your memstick called "DOWNDATER".
That's the folder you'll have to send to a 2.50/2.60 to let him test the downgrade.

2.50/2.60 User Instructions

Copy the folder the DOWNGRADER/2.50/DOWNDATERTEST if you have 2.50
or DOWNGRADER/2.60/DOWNDATERTEST if you have 2.60 to /PSP/GAME/ in your memstick
Wait for someone with 1.50 to pass you a folder called DOWNDATER and copy it to the root of your memstick.
Init GTA and the eLoader
In the eLoader menu, choose the downdater test. WARNING: the program won't output any display and any warnings, it will init the downgrader process inmediatelly.
You'll see that your memstick flashing. That means that your psp is being flashed from the memstick.
You won't see any type of output in the screen (this is for safety). When the memstick finishes of flashing, WAIT at least a minute, and then reinit your psp by holding the power button.
That's all. If all went right, you'll have 1.50. If it went less good, you'll still have 2.50/2.60. If all went wrong, you'll have a bricked psp(except in the case you have the modchip) Remember that you have accepted that risk.
If your PSP is showing up as v2.01, this is fine. Just use Wab Version Changer and change it to v1.50

Update: For those of you wondering why your UMDs say "Disc cannot be read," take your battery out of your PSP (for up to 5 minutes) and then put it back in your PSP. Your UMDs will then work! Thanks to ZFB8 and Pranav for the information. Pranav has also successfully downgraded his 2.60 White PSP (originally 2.50 JP) to 1.50, upgraded to 2.00, and back down to 1.50 sucessfully as well.

Update #2: This will be sticky for awhile to ensure that everyone will see this amazing breakthrough! Interested in viewing our members success rate?

Update #3: Dark_Alex has informed everyone that he will release the "final" version tomorrow. The changes in this version are best to be heard from the man himself - "Well, really, there is no much that it can be done to the downdater. I'll add a check for the AC adaptor, it will display a red screen if it's not connected and return to eloader (note: that will be done in user mode because of the problems of the display functions with this kernel mode exploit). Also, remove the logs, since they could end the free space of a 32 MB ms, and that will be the latest version that will be released tomorrow. I prefer not to touch the "real thing". If something works, better not to change it"

Probably true, but im happy having my 1.5, knowing that I didnt have to put up with higher firmware fiascos, and take the risk with the beta or alpha downgraders

Still this is a mighy huge improvement, and im happy that all those 2.6 users can break free, poor 2.7er's.

Hi everyone, I just have one question. I exchanged my old PSP for a new one at Best Buy, and when I bought it, it had Firmware 2.5. So I updated to 2.6 figuring there was no difference. I just downgraded my 2.6 to 1.5. It was easier than I thought it would be, although I was very nervous. Well, I'm off to get a shell, Devhook, and X-Flash. Cheers to all others who are gonna downgrade or already did, and MAJOR props to the guys who made this and disproved the naysayers.

I know 1.5 is probably the best version right now but shouldnt we focus on homebrew on 2.6 right now since apparently its hacked. I know they said the same thing about 2.0 homebrew and obiously it was not as pleasing since you had to use eloader but 2.6 has kernal mode!

or if u open up My Computer then select removable disk e,f,g,etc. then u will go into the root of the psp depending on which drive letter ur psp is

It's just we should start moving forward to simplify things. Chances are when someone gets a PSP, its going to be a higher version. There was no point in keeping 1.0 psp once things on 1.5 were kxploited right? Well since we have kernal access, why not just work our way through it to get full homebrew access on 2.6's? Now the real question is, dose the overflow exist on 2.7 thus 2.71 came out?

So if we find a way to launch arbitrary code on the 2.7 could we still use the same exploit?

If thats the case, everytime a .x1 firmware comes out, it turns out there was a exploit in the previous versions.

I wonder if a new wave exploits might come since with the modchip you basically have the ability to view the code in anyway you want to look for bugs if you have the right skills.

I got my psp on the day it came out, 3rd in line. My brother updated it to 2.50 to play a new game of his. then when the gta hack came out i up'd it to 2.6... now with this wonderful downdater its back to 1.5 again. At the end it scared me when it restarted a few times, once with different languages and then another for inital psp info input. It comes up with a disk read error that freaked me out, tried different discs then after a few minutes i shut it off and turned it on again, discs work now and its 1.5, first thing i tried was the NES emulator straight from the memstick option! and it really really works! Im also high as a kite, the only way i would have done it with the risk of bricking, and it works! ok done celebrating, have fun non tc-082 peeps

EVERYONE! After you downgrade, if you get the message that says "Disk could not be read", just take out the battery, put it back in, and turn it back on, it WILL work.

nick, it should be fine, when i had 2.0 AUS version and downgraded to 1.5 with a jap firmware it was fine, only the occasional times when it wouldnt turn off ud just do a hard shutdown (power switch for 10 secs)

The Iso's are the best. I also love PSPradio, and Devhook. Since Devhook alows you to load Iso's along with switching back and forth between 1.5 and 2.5 firmware. You just resart the system to get bach to 1.5. Congrats again! And DaX loader is awesome also!

Ok, just finished doing this, but I noticed that right before I disconnected my psp to downgrade, it said I had 27.0 gigabytes of space in my psp folder

I downloaded the downdater 2.6 files and put them in the psp/game folder.

I downloaded 1.5 files from psphacks and the folder has subfolders titled Flash0 and Flash1, is that the correct thing I'm supposed to use? And if so where do I put that? Do I just open up the folder from my computer and the first area that shows psp files I set it in there?

Should work on factory 2.5 upgraded to 2.6 as it worked for my factory 2.6 unless you have the TA-082 board but still unconfirmed that it does not really works on that board.

when i load eboot from the eloader .97 it just restarts the psp and says the disc cannot be read. then i restart the psp, and the gta disc is read and the process begins again.. did i miss something? thanks

Unfortunately I don't know what firmware came with my PSP from the factory because one of the first things I did after opening it was update the firmware. This was obviously before I knew anything about homebrew. I just ran the downgrader and I'll soon be enjoying devhook in all its glory!

Update: According to early reports, some people are finding "IC6001" located on the other side of the UMD drive than what is pictured. This is an indicator for TA-081 PCB's and WILL be compatible with Undiluted Platinum. If you don't see "IC1003" than you are good to go!

I just imported my Ceramic White PSP from Lik-Sang like 4 months ago and its a TA-082. On the front page it says it "may" work. Has anyone tried it out yet or has it been confirmed to 100% not work?

Worked beautifully on my factory 2.5 PSP (not TA-082). I upgrated to 2.6 first, then used the 2.6 -> 1.5 downgrader. Like everyone said a zillion times here, the ms light flashes for a couple of minutes, then the psp resets and tells you your settings are corrupt... press O, system resets again, tells you "error reading disk"... turn it off and back on, and now you will have a perfectly viable 1.5 PSP.

IT WORKED.

Bit of a discrepancy compared to what the article says though: after I started the downgrader, the memory stick light flashed and all, which went on for about a minute. I was doing other stuff on the computer at the time, and suddenly I heard the sound the PSP makes when you boot it up - it restarted itself!

The "blah blah blah press O to restore default settings blah blah blah" screen came up, so I did so, and after that, I simply got the "Set up your language and stuff" screen.

I honestly can't believe it worked now.

You have my sincere thanks, Mathieulh and Dark Alex.

I am getting the "Disc could not be read" errors though. Oh well. It seems the fix for that is simple enough :)

Time to go look into the wonderful world of 1.5 only firmware... ;)

What if that "someone" makes a wrong step? You will brick your PSP

I think that someone should make a pack that contains:

1. Update to 2.5 or 2.6 for those with version 2.01 (Valid for Europe, USA, Japan)

2. Those files from someone with 1.50 ! and not just someone. These files should be checked. Something like the "official" files that works on all PSP.

3. The downgrader

I hope this pack (one rar. file) will appear soon to easy the download process.

I have a 2.01 Jap PSP. I don't think it is a TA-082 as I can't even see the pcb when I open the UMD slot, just metal casing.

A few people have been asking if the US dumps of the 1.5 firmware are ok for use on a EUR PSP.

I succesfuly downgraded my EUR 2.6 using US dumps, it doesnt seem to have caused any issues so far.

As far as I know the PSP isn't region dependent. Does anybody know if UMD films are region coded?

It does not have a TA-082 board,

and it came from factory with FW. 2.50

For security, always remember this, before downgrading:

If your PSP was originally a 1.0/1.5/1.51/1.52/2.0/2.01 and you upgraded then you are fine to downgrade, if you purchased your PSP and it was 2.50/2.60 out of the box then do not attempt this until the verification level of it working is more complete and reliable.

I have just successfully downgraded my 2.6 PSP.

It is a factory 2.5 which I updated to 2.6, The downdate process works exactly as outlined I started the downgrader, the memory stick light flashed and all, which went on for about a minute the psp turned of by it self and i was like fucccc i bricked ma psp and then it started n i was so happy i now have a 1.5 n a 2.00 i got a umd disk error i turn of my psp and it started to work again then i upgraded to 2.0 and goin 2 downgrade to 1.5 and have 2 1.5 psp

All of you who EVER doubted that Yoshihiro and the gang were the ORIGINAL psp hackers(also do not foget HUMMA KAVULA, though he had nothing to do with yoshihiro and sonyXteam) are idots of the first order.

If anything SonyXteam DESERVES a formal apology from smack talking websites such as pspupdates who defamed them and gave the limelight to over-rated baby hacker such as fluff and fanjita. I remember when one of your "mods" replied to one of my comments stating that people like Dark_alex, DragonUK and SonyXteam do nothing but spread rumors for fame and if anything propmote piracy.

Off-topic but, Donkey64's take on Daedalus is by far the nicest N64 emu YET! Not PSMonkey's but DONKEY'S... another berated developer thanks to pspupdates.

It's GTA thats doing that, you can't play it by normal means on a 1.50. And it keeps asking you to update. There is no real way to stop that. Get MPH Game loader, you can load GTA with that.

IT WORKS! i downgraded last night. I downloaded the eloader and put other homebrew on my memory stick so somehow it would notice the downdater file and it did so i pushed "X" and it went dark and started flashing(kind of a pain sitting through watching a psp being flashed). I downloaded the files from psp-hacks and now I have been from 1.5>2.0>2.6>1.5. After i downloaded the files, all i had to do was extract them do the root (F:) or (E:) or whatever and started the process. So yes if you tinks it's hard, it's pretty easy so give it a shot if you're brave enough and it will all go well if you put the files in the right area. Btw. make sure you don't have one of those psps with TA-082

I upgraded from 2.01>to>2.60.

I downloaded the psp 1.5 dump from psphack.com and downloaded 2.6 downgrader eboot from this site. But when i ran the GTA and loaded the eboot..the screen turns black then the blue screen comes up saying that "cannot read disc." I tried the removing the battery for 5mins and then ran it again. I still get the same result. it is like a loop. Can someone tell me or give me the file names of the folders? i dont need the files, all i need are the naming scheme. Would just like to add my success to the list:

Original fw1.00 JP machine, went from 1.00 -> 1.50 -> 2.00 -> 1.50 -> 2.00 -> 2.60 and now back to 1.50 using this downgrader.

Before downgrade

(1) Can an updated 2.5/2.6 (non-TA-082) downgrade to 1.5?

(2) Can a factory 2.5/2.6 (non-TA-082) downgrade to 1.5?

(3) Does it matter if you use a JAP 1.5 or US 1.5 downdater dump?

(4) Does 2.7+ work with this downgrader?

With successful downgrade:

(5) Does 1.5 DevHook work after the downgrade?

(6) Is it possible to update firmware back to 2.6, etc?

After getting high with 1.5

(7) Can we send Dark Alex and the rest of the developers flowers?

I downgraded my 2.50 at 2am this morning.. successfuly!!! cant believe it yet! one thing.. you need 1.50 eboots (2.01+ use 1.00 firmware eboot) if an eboot doesnt work.. Ex: NesterJ, Squarez etc... you will need to patch using the NOKEXPLOIT eboot that you can find in the download section of qj.net..

I downloaded the psp 1.5 dump from psphack.com and downloaded 2.6 downgrader eboot from this site. But when i ran the GTA and loaded the eboot..the screen turns black then the blue screen comes up saying that "cannot read disc." I tried the removing the battery for 5mins and then ran it again. I still get the same result. it is like a loop. Can someone tell me or give me the file names of the folders? i dont need the files, all i need are the naming scheme. Could it be the file naming that is giving the problem of a disc cannot be read? PLZ HELP!!!!

It's simple. Put the 0.5 downgrader eboot.pbp in a "DOWNDATER TEST" folder off of /PSP/GAME ... get the 1.5 helper files (which should be a folder called DOWNDATER) and put that folder on the root of your memstick (ms0/). Load GTA, then eLoader, then start the DOWNDATER TEST eboot. Wait for the lights to flash for about 3minutes, then it'll automatically reboot the psp. Press circle to repair corrupt registry, then boom PSP restarts again. Check system info, you now have a 1.5.

Simple. I did it with the first batch of guys testing it out... and couldn't be happier.

Yeap it works for me i had one of firsts model of psp in us.

Done all the steps said on the main topic and it works like a charm on my PSP 2.5 factory fw.

Steps i'eve taken

1 - upgraded my psp 2.5 to 2.6

2 - conecte my psp to AC power

3 - Run GTA and eloader

4 - Run downgradertest - waited at least 1minute wile psp ms led was flashing.

5 - PSP restarted automaticaly and gived screen saying that data was corrupeted pressed O and it restarted again.

6 - PSP asked for initial data and finally i had 1.5 fw on my psp.

Thanks for the devolopers of this brilliant application.

for those of you who might have probs... what i personnaly did is i downgraded 2.50 --> 1.50 and then 1.50 to 2.00 and finallly 2.00 to 1.50.. it fix small bugs like we have a corrupted data icon now.. not just a white ugly box.. and I now have a theme which I didnt have when i downgraded 2.5-1.5.. so i went into the 2.00 puted a theme and downgraded.. do the same if you like.. its safe.. good bye!

well just used the files from psp-spot and the eloader from noobz.eu......I did as instructed and worked like a charm. Was very nerve racking but I did it. I had an original US psp that came with 1.5 and continued updating it to 2.6 and then stopped in hope of something like this would come along. Info about the job for a factory 2.5 PSP1006 (HK):

1. Formatted MStick

2. Downloaded 2.6 updater (US) from dl.qj

3. Upgraded to 2.6 (US)

4. Downloaded eloader automatic installer and installed it to MStick

5. Downloaded 2.6 downloader from psphacks and run it (as it comes) to the PSP root

If u have firmware 2.6 check on your oryginal box what version u have if u have letter code (below the 120V):

A = 1.5

B = 1.51

C, D, E = 1.52

F = 2.0

G = 2.01

H = 2.50

I = 2.60 DONT DO IT

if u have ABCFGH - use Downgrade 0.5 final version

on post 902 they have the 1.5 dump files, but its the brick posibility one

download that one then replace the downdater (or somthin like that) in the game folder with the new (N00B Proof) one.

I have updated my AU 2.01 PSP to 2.6 using US FW, then back to 1.5. works great!. Use eloader EU version or it wont find your eboot file in eloader.

well i just spent the last 24 hours solid podering weather to do this or not. well it was a great sucsess i had a psp i baught last year december as a giga pack (psp1004) if i looked inside the umd housing i could see ic6001 on the left hand side it came from factory with 2.01 loaded just sat back and waited for the inevitable downgrader to come

well first updated to 2.5 and then downgraded to 1.5 with no problems at all just thought ill tell every one to prove sucsess story:)

-happy owner of psp 1.5 now
