In a time when Dark_AleX and Booster creations are, arguably, the cream of the crop, it is always nice to have other options for all of us in the homebrew community. Remember the year-old Custom Firmware 1.50: Media Edition? Well, eiffel56 informed us (thanks for the tip!) that he has released Custom Firmware 1.53. So what does this do?
This one is made for FW1.5 loyalists. Basically, it's a custom firmware which allows you to do more things on your FW 1.50, like starting nokxploited EBOOTS and so on. Here's what's new for this release:
- Recovery Menu
- Boot Menu
- Integrated uxMB
- You can start 1.00 style EBOOTS
- You can hide corrupt data icons
- You can start ISO/DAX files
- You can load your own plugins(PRX)
- Autoboot EBOOTs at startup
- Never turn off the backlight in XMB

Anyways, I think that the majority of people that are still on 1.5, are there because they're afraid to flash, so even though this is a great development, I don't see a whole lot of people using it.

What do you think the changelog means when it says "NEVER TURN OFF BACKLIGHT IN XMB" what do you think could go wrong,?
Great to see 1.5 homebrew with some life in it still. While I prefer 3.xxOE cfw, may I remind the doubters that 1.53 has the following advantages over the OE cfw:
- A lot more customizable: the 1.50 has been completely hacked.
- More room left in flash still: a hell of a lot more homebrew features/plugins can still be added to it.
So, it's up to you to choose what matters to you the most: a more feature-rich cfw, or one that is dedicated to homebrew and more easily customizable.

As for what could go wrong, try to imagine the worst image burnin you've ever seen of the psp loading pmf. Now try to imagine the possible uses. Movies? not quite as nice without the better avc format support and 480 x 272 in the xmb is it? What about visualizations? dude, you don't have those. Lets just pretend that half those isos you have will work without the newer kernels and that you have the gall to actually convert ciso format to dax for use with this instead of devhook (which is what your sure to be using a lot with this).
Nah, its like seeing a work of art made to recognize the days of yore. 1.50 is a beautiful thing. I truly believe that has been effectively replaced though without a doubt in my mind. I think Snarg nails it when he says that anyone who hasn't changed is more afraid to flash then they are loyal to the pure 1.50. I do think that it is a cool accomplishment though and that it may lead to an interesting development in other areas for the future.

c'mon 1.5 hold outs - don't fear the change. you lose NOTHING in 3.10OE. You only stand to gain a whole new world of fun.
It's an LCD screen, which is just pixels that are colored different colors. It isn't affected by leaving the same image on the screen, like laptops or flat panel monitors, or LCD HDTV's.
It's nice that some devs still make cool things even though there's more mainstream custom firmwares. Good for her. I'm sure someone will find this useful :)

I've definitely had the "PSP" from the gameboot screen burned onto the screen, although only temporarily. It's probably a different kind of screen-burn though.

yes this is normal, happens to me loads. Its not burn in though, because it goes away.

I don't regret giving up 1.50, but I can't deny how awesome this is. No way I'm giving up the ps1 emulator for this.

Are you sure it was a burn? If you put the psp in it's case and then in your pocket the psp logo from the case will appear on your screen(pocket lint?)... just wipe it off.
Well thats cool... I hope Dark Alex adds support for dax files in the next release of his custom firmware. I get better compression and better playback speeds from dax than I do from cso, most of the time... or is that just me?

personally i use 3.10 oe but thats purely because of ps1 i've removed the prx's and rco's from it so i have more room in my flash but other then the ps1 emu i'ed rather have this (altho the backup loading from xmb with even newer games is nice and all)

Yes, we may be able to bend over the back of a chair easier or run faster and lift heavier things, but in the world of programming you may be wrong. Some studies suggest that we think differently, but it obviously doesn't effect her outdoing all of you guys who have replied in programming here.

Its happened to me too. It definately happens at the highest light setting. Something like Pimpstreamers purple background can really show it. And yes, a liquid color display is a liquid color display, NOT just pixels. It uses liquids that can get stuck and burn in all the same. A pixel is just one area in which the light shins through.

This is great that more developers are starting custom firmwares. It seems like DAX (or any custom firmware developer) might be more motivated to make their CFW the best if there's some real competition! However, I don't think a 1.50 CFW will be too much competition for a 3.XX one, as 3.00+ has PSX, Browser, you can load higher FW games, and a lot more icons (which you can use to make do a custom action) I hope someone else makes a 3.XX CFW with DAX files support... in my opinion, one thing 3.10 OE is missing that it really needs is DAX support!

im on 303oeb but i think 1.50 is still the original golden firmware,this is where it all started even though the first firmware to get hacked was 1.00.....1.50 is where everything began and developed for over a year,the only thing that made me go custom was the ability to launch all my media from the psp xmb,worth the risk of flashing my psp.

I only developed 1.50 EE-A because i was very bored. And it was a good chance to understand the PSP better. Some people liked it, so i continued my work to 1.53.
Dark_Alex Custom Firmwares are MUCH better because he is a professional developer. I´m just new to PSP and C. Also 1.53 isn´t all my work, it´s only a refined compilation. The ISO/DAX loader is 99% by Dark_Alex. The only thing that is 100% by me is the uxMB.

Has anyone else tried this 1.53 firmware and got what happened to my psp. First i was on 3.10 oe and done the recovery to get back to 1.50 so i could try this new 1.53. so im in 1.50 and i use the CF and it all seems to be working ok then when it restarts i got an error screen saying it couldnt fing some eeconfig file or something and it took me back to the 1.53 recovery menu, then i clicked on the recovery XMB option and my psp started as normal and it appeared as if it was in 1.50 but when i checked the system settings the firmware said my psp was a version 1.00. I then put 3.10 oe back on but does anyone know why this happened.

i have a psp tat was already version 2.5 when i bought it from the store and i was just wondering if it is possible to downgrade it because i heard tat it is not possible to downgrade factory made 2.5 psp. is it possible to upgrade it to 3.03 then downgrade it to 1.5 n then use the custom filmware? cause im kinda tired of loading the GTA n then playing my games from there. ok tats all, tks for ur help.
