PSP - Image 1

Hear that? That's the sound of homebrew aficionados booting up their PSP-3000s and getting ready to finally run some homebrew on the thing. Why? Davee and Team Typhoon have finally released the 5.03 HEN, that's why. Before you go download it, though, read this description from Davee first.

What does the ChickHEN do?

ChickHEN as a Homebrew Enabler that allows the execution of homebrew via the PSP XMB. Running via a vulnerability in the lib TIFF the launcher takes advantage of the system by performing a kernel exploit and rebooting into a homebrew enabled enviroment. The ChickHEN remains active until the PSP is fully reset in which case official firmware loads from the flash. ChickHEN unlike other HEN's doesn't touch the flash0 and resides completely in memory. The h.bin supplied in this download consists of a loader and systemex, which is a inversed order of systemctrl and rebootex

What ChickHEN does NOT do?

  • Run ISO, CSO or any other form of UMD backup.
  • Run PSX Games
  • Touch The Flash of your beloved PSP
  • Magically allow the use of Custom Firmware
  • Load plugins
Make sure to read the readme file included in the download before you go messing about with the HEN too. You can discuss this release on the QJ.NET PSP Development forum.

*UPDATE*

Enjoying this golden nugget, eh? Well there seems to be a bit of a setback. As it turns out, this release is not capable of running any homebrew -- just yet. But don't worry, Team Typhoon and Davee will be releasing a new verstion tomorrow to fix the aforementioned issues.

Oh, goody! More ChickHEN to look forward to!

» great work

great job on working on this so far! im guessing all the 3000 ppl are ealy happy....and it wont load iso's cso's at least initially which i think is great.

but now all the noob Q's will come out of the works, with a tone of ppl asking how to play iso's and use chickHEN, and then abuse the ppl who explain when they cant understand. Im sure there will also be ppl who abuse others over the NO iso thing.

Those kinda ppl who only take from the community and never give back really make me sad.

» True it is still great work

the bug will get fixed eventually and everyone can enjoy HOMEBREW glory, and for anyone with a 3000, i tried atleast 30 times before i got the hen working, but when i plugged in the TV out cable and enabled it, the hen loaded 5 outta times, so it seems with that cable in it works constantly atleast for me CHEERS Davee

» for those on 5.05

i've tested

and even though the tiff exploit works on 5.05 it seems HEN is 5.03 only as when exploit is run it shows red screen instead of green.

wouldnt take much to edit it for 5.05 though i imagine.

Nice work Davee, MaTiAz and freeplay.

keep the brew flowing.

This is great. I wish DarkAlex would release a similar version of the M33 firmware, something that lets you run homebrew, your own ripped PS1 games and support plugins but doesn't run CSO or ISO files. Just so there isn't the stigma of having a custom firmware, which isn't great in my industry.

by Chronos15 - 2009-05-06 01:16
» Son...I am disappoint.

Why release something that doesn't do anything except having the name HEN? It doesn't even play homebrew!! At the moment it can do NOTHING. They should've waited to release it so people could actually do something with it.

not worried bout my PSP-3000 since i have a 1000 and 2000 model anyway.

but for you with 5.05. you will need a downdater to 5.03 before you can utilise HEN

» RTFM?

You people don't make those any more. It's all youtube clips and what not. And the funny thing is ... you leave crucial bits of information out. Leaving me to google for hours to find the one other guy that had the problem ... and maybe if I'm lucky figured out why it was an issue. This is generation TUBE. No one writes everyone posts half done video clips.

by du.der.icio.us - 2009-05-06 02:32
» Nope.

You're the idiot ... It doesn't run homebrew yet ... some sort of bug. Can you read?

by apex05 - 2009-05-06 03:22
» Why?

Why are people whining about this not running homebrew yet? It took a long time to hack the Psp 3000 and if Davee kept this to himself it would take even longer, and apparently he's just a kid preparing for his exams, this way everyone has a chance to work on the hack and get it developed faster, and it's only a Tiff exploit so there's little chance of bricking, so being buggy doesn't matter.

» BS

Dude, there is no way that this bricked your PSP - it doesn't effect the flash memory!

If you're having problems booting to official firmware, just take out your memory stick and turn the PSP on. Then throw in the memory stick and format it.

by Drunk Vegan - 2009-05-06 07:21
» Kudos

Congrats to Davee and Team Typhoon for this breakthrough. It's the last major breakthrough that'll happen on the PSP - not counting the inevitable CFW & ISO loaders which will utilize this exploit.

For everyone complaining that it isn't working, just remember it's your own fault - yesterday you were complaining because the HEN wasn't being released fast enough.

They'll iron out the bugs soon enough. Then... on to hacking the PSP2! :)

Why is the unofficial fix for HEN taken down?

by Drunk Vegan - 2009-05-06 07:42
» no, you didn't

I call BS - yet again.

Clearly you don't understand anything about how the PSP firmware operates.

FLASH MEMORY is the area of the system software that interacts with the hardware - there have been many cases where writing to the flash has bricked PSPs - via poorly written homebrew programs, risky downgraders, etc.

But there has never, once, been a brick caused by code that does not write to the flash memory - because it's not possible!

As for "suing" the team that made this HEN - good luck finding a court that will compensate you for:

a) Trying to install "unsigned code" which Sony explicitly forbids in it's EULA

b) "Bricking" your PSP without actually writing anything into the flash memory.

ok, i think im doinf it right but its not working, ive tried it like 10 times. The ChickHEN folder is in the PSP\Photo and the h.bin is on the root of the memory stick so it should be working right? can someone help me?

» so...

is Ir Shell usable with this on 3000? if it can play mp3s while running my homebrew, then i will surely go out and buy my @$$ a 3000. thanks Davee, even tho i own a fatty fat one. :/

by Spottednigel - 2009-05-06 15:22
» Quick How-to

For those having trouble loading HEN:

Go to System>Restore Default Settings. Do it. You can change things back later.

The ChickHEN Tiff folder goes into the PSP/Photo Folder. It may work in plain ol' PICTURES, but it work 2nd try in PSP/PHOTO.

The H file goes into the root of the memory card. That means it goes right onto the card and not into a folder. It should go right along with the PSP, PICTURES, Video and other file folders NOT IN THEM. That means no MP_ROOT folder, and don't even try to make a MS_ROOT folder.

Last but not least... After trying WAY too many times before the "DUH" moment without doing what I listed above, when you have done those things listed above, it Probably WONT work first try. I tried it once and got the blank screen and the loud speaker click, restarted the machine and tried again... Green screen of happiness, a restart, and finally ChickHen 5.03.

Currently playing some GBA Mario Kart :)
