2.71 PSP's say "Goodbye" - Downgrader Released!

As some 2.71 PSPÂ’s say hello to the world, others will be saying goodbye at the same time as a downgrader has been released just a few moments ago!!

For this one occasion, I grant you permission to jump on your computerÂ’s desk; jumping up and down until you have broken your desk. The reason for such a command is that after you have done it you probably wonÂ’t care about the desk, as you have just read that a 2.71 downdater (downgrader) has now been made available! Yes, thatÂ’s right Â– all you 2.71 owners (who do not have a TA-082 motherboard) will be able to downgrade your PSP to firmware 1.50.

Using the recently exploited vulnerability in the tiff library, Dark_Alex (with the help of Mathieulh) has managed to create a 2.71 downdater. You are probably wondering how they managed to create this so fast, and the answer is simple. This 2.71 downdater is a port of the 2.50/2.60 downdater that was released slightly over 2 months ago. This new downdater, like the previous one, will not work with TA-082 PSPÂ’s. However, if you do happen to have such a PSP Â– 0okm has been working on a softdown (no hardware changes required) method, so you are not left in the dust.

The procedure for installing, and successfully downgrading your PSP comprises of several steps in which one must be very careful. Since this downdgrader is a port of the 2.50/2.60 downdater Â– it functions the exact same way Â– just without the need for GTA. So, all the installation instructions may seem extremely familiar as they follow some of the exact same procedures as the original downdater. There were several bricked PSP's during testing but this latest version appears to be stable, but please remain cautious. As always, please follow the directions exactly as they appear. If you choose to proceed with this downgrader, use it at your own risk as bricking may occur.

If you are anxious to prepare for the downgrader (which you are, of course) check out our previous coverage of the 2.50/2.60 Downgrader as the installation process will most likely be nearly identical.

We will have the download and full details available in just a few short hours, so be sure to stay with QJ.NET and PSPUpdates for all the details! This post will be updated as more info comes streaming in!

Update #1: Just a few minutes after posting and already an update! According to the developers, the code for the downgrader is still a bit unstable, so it may not start up successfully on the first try - hence the codename "Old Car." However, it is stable once it actually begins to run and there should not be any problem with bricking if the instructions (soon to be provided) are followed precisely.

Also, as mentioned above, Mathieulh & Dark_Alex did brick several of their PSP's during the initial testings. If you feel like donating to their cause, you can do so here. (Also, mad props to Xairu and Birdman for their bravery in testing the downgrader, as well as joshrulez2 who was the first tester - and the first brick!)

Update #2: For your convenience , and to save you time, we have taken the liberty of giving you the instructions for the 1.50 helper/dumper program. This program is required for one to downgrade their PSP as it dumps important 1.50 files from a firmware 1.50 PSP. Here's how you can obtain these files (do not ask for them, they are illegal to distribute) -

1.50 User Instructions

Copy the folders downhelper and downhelper% from the folder 1.50 HELPER folder to /PSP/GAME/ in your memstick. (The DownHelper can be downloaded below)
Obtain the 1.50 update EBOOT and put it in /PSP/GAME/UPDATE in your memstick. You may find the 1.50 update in our download site here.
Initilize the downhelper program.
It will dump your flash and some files from the updater eboot to the memstick. (These files are illegal under US copyright laws, so please do not distribute them in the comments or on our forums)
After that, the program will exit. You can now delete the updater from /PSP/GAME/UPDATE
You'll notice that you have a new folder in the root of your memstick called "DOWNDATER". (See diagram on right for arrangement - click to enlarge)
That's the folder you'll have to send to a 2.71 owner to let him downgrade.

2.71 User Instructions

Download the Downgrader below and copy the files inside MS_ROOT to the root of your memory stick.
Wait for someone with 1.50 to pass you a folder called DOWNDATER and copy it to the root of your memstick.
It is recomended that you have the psp at more than 50% batteery and connected to AC
Go to the XMB Photo viewer.

At this point will one of the following things:

You'll see a full red screen. This indicates that the downdater is doing its job. Wait for it to finish. When it finishes it will crash on purpose. Restart your PSP manually and you'll probably have a 1.50 if nothing went wrong.

You don't see the red screen. This indicates that the downdater code has not started to execute. (even if the memstick blinks (or not), It doesn't matter! If the screen is not red, you can safely restart the PSP at this point and try again).

This happens because of instability in the tiff. Don't worry, just restart the PSP and keep trying until you reach the red screen of the downdater. The downdater code is NEVER executed partially. It's either executed totally or nothing. It depends on "luck" but usually the downdater will start to execute in a average of 1/10 times. Things that may increase the probabilities:

- A fresh formatted memory stick.

- A 32 MB memory stick (and fresh formatted)

Update #3: Don't you love it when things go ahead of schedule? The downgrader is here and can be downloaded below! This has been tested by a few people and confirmed, but who knows what the results will be now that it has been released to the public! Download at your own risk! Read the install instructions above!

You should be very certain you feel comfortable with the procedure. If you don't, do not attempt to downgrade your PSP. The crew at Nooz.eu have already stated that a Kernel Mode eLoader is possible for 2.71, so if you are unsure about downgrading just be patient and wait for a more risk-free alternative to become available!

For those of you who have 2.01 - 2.60 Firmware but DO NOT have GTA and want to use this downgrader by taking advantage of the new libtiff exploit, you can find the 2.71 Firmware Update at DL.QJ.NET.

Will this work on 2.80?
Some commenters keep insisting that this works on the 2.80. Some commenters keep insisting that it will brick your 2.80 if you try it. A word of sanity: until the developer says that it works on 2.80, it's probably a bad idea to try it on a 2.80.
How do I turn off comments by unregistered users?
FYI for Registered users: some of you have complained about all the spam (we're dealing with the worst of it but the comments are coming in faster than we can handle right now). You have a temporary solution: above the very first comment you see a drop-down menu next to the words "Unregistered Comments." Select "Hide" to hide all comments by unregistered users.

Wow, I knew that it was coming, and like i said about the initial finding of the exploit; I didnt think that it would have come from an image vulnerability. Still kickin my own balls for upgrading to 2.8.... First off i havent been into the PSP seen for a while now... since i had FW 2.0 and all that i could do with it was the GTA Eboot Emu's for the SNES...then i stopped getting into it.... then like throughout the year ive been picking up my psp just for music n whatnot... then one day i see this playstation underground and downloadable demos... bam sony sucked me in... and not thinking before upgrading i did it without lookin at the forums.... so all i got from this 2.8 is two LAME @$$ demos... im such an idiot.....

given the PSP firware history, it has NEVER been stupid to upgrade if there were features you wanted that were not available in previous fws. yes, for a short time, people were not able to enjoy homebrew apps and games but as time passes we have all seen the introduction of various loaders and downgraders for newer firmwares. people that say "oh, 2.8 will never be hacked" are only kidding themselves. remember when downgrading 2.5/2.6 was IMPOSSIBLE? well, obviously it wasn't. who knows, maybe it really can't be downgraded. i'd just recommend having an open mind instead of saying "no, no, it can't be done".

#25 - get a grip. none of us "deserve" anything the devs have put out for us. it's a privilage that these wonderful people take so much time and effort to create options for us. given your attitude, you shouldn't even have that privilage.

I'm a proud owner of 1.50 and yesterday i went to buy the PSP limited Collectors edition (the White one with the black strips (kanjis)) It came with Firmware 2.71 and TA-082. I am just a bit sad about the TA-082. 0okm is workin' hard on it, I believe he can do it. Well great news though

its a shame,im happy for most people but for all the older people of these forums...if you can remember correctly

2.00 = loads of reply's of happiness and relief probably 600+

2.60= a massive ammount of reply's probably 500+ in half a day but about 1000 now

2.70-2.71=not many replies yet,about 3 hours this has been up and 150- replies :(

i think it just makes us all forget how desperate everyone was when 2.0 got homebrew blocked and how much of a struggle it was to create an exploit,then just when 2.00 was cracked it was 2.01 and then the real problems began...around 9months later we create a downgrade for 2.01,2.50,2.60 (well not really 2.01 but it was downgradable)

and 2.71 gets cracked in about 2 or 1 month and there's really not much hype over it :( shame really as i remember the comments of joy everyone made and this time there's hardly any posts whatsoever

but hey for those who appreciate the struggle and hard work and everything i hope you enjoy some great homebrew!

and heres a word of advice:

when you get your 1.50,the first thing people usually wanna do is change the fonts,wallpaper s,version spoof,devhook.etc

DONT DO IT YET

GET CUSTOM FW!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

if you get custom firmware you can unbrick your psp if you get a partial brick from modding it or an error....

so yeah there's a quick word of advice

Yay! The time is coming for me to come back! I abandoned HB half a year ago and updated to 2.60 then 2.70 and haven't rly played with PSP since :/ I bought PSP as 1.52 in EU when it got out and updated to 2.00 and then downgraded to 1.50 and back to 2.00 and 1.50 a few times ^^ now I'm coming back to HB!

I have been 1.50 since I purchased my PSP the night it came out. However this is amazing news for all you ppl new to the scene!

Remember that we are always lacking in developers here in the PSP homebrew community! After you downgrade try out the emulators, then go and read some c++ books or something. And dont forget to search google for lua tutorials to help get you on your way.

I've been waiting for this day ever since I updated to 2.71. If you saw me, I've been looking on pspupdates for a month now every minute possible. I knew someday I would have a 1.5. what u do is (if it wont work) go to games and lick on the memory card then get out and go to photo and u should see the red screen give it about 3 minutes and it should work

this gives you an imperfect 1.5 firmware. I reccomend you upgrade to 2.0 then downgrade to 1.5 again using MPH downgrader. This will prevent the possibility of future bricking mishaps.

i just did this and it works, it takes a few tries but the red screen eventually comes up.

For those who want to know how to get this working:

step 1.

go through it and select somewhere on your pc to make the program think it is your psp. it will then put the DOWNDATER files to that location

step 2.

with that, follow the steps in the guide written on this page

it seriously worked for me, it does nothing and crashes a few times but there is no harm done, you can just simply reset your psp till it finally works

It works, Now got a 1.5 PSP :) Just remember to follow the instructions exactly, Use the Memory stick that came with the PSP and as a little hint from me, after the files are on your PSP, Turn it off completely, Turn it back on, wait about 15 seconds, Then goto Photo, Should boot directly to the red screen on first try!

i suggest that the first thing you do is update to 2.00 and use the 2.00 > 1.50 downgrader to get a "clean" version

then download devhook and harleyg's custom firmware to prevent future brickage!!

ps. if you are and idiot you may brick it in the process, but if you do as it says on the psp-hacks tutorial then you should be fine.

I just wanted to mention this, I used it about 2minutes ago:

If you don't have anybody whos got the DOWNDATER folder can just use the 'Downgrader2.50-2.60ENFULL.exe'.

Instead of typing the PSP root folder you can just create a new folder onto the desktop and type this into the form.

Now you've got the DOWNDATER folder in it, just go as followed in the readme and use this DOWNDATER folder ;)

Nothings gone wrong it can do this just use wab version changer if it bothers you n chancge it to 1.50 or take battery out for a minuite 2 c if that works,

The root of the memory card is the first place you goto once you click into your psp [its got the psp folder in it Not the Game ,Folder ext]

It dont matter what firmware you use JAP Or US AS they all work so dont worry if u have a jap psp n an US downdater 1.50 downdater file it dont matter,

for every out there with 2.80 firmware, i am a firware 2.80 myself. It doesn't work. unlike 2.50, 2.60, 2.70 and 2.71 all had the same security codes but in 2.80 they changed it.

Dont worry we should all wait for the eloader fanjita will bring out, possibly 2morrow or wait for sony with their new firmware with playstation 1 emulation both ways we will win.

I've had many hombrew games on my 2.60 firmware with GTA LCS exploit ,their all crap but did enjoy the sega, snes and all emus. Honestly saying the only thing good about 1.5 fw is the ISO loaders which every loves but say they hate cause this site does like it.

Dont worry 2.80 There is life outside the psp that most 1.5's dont know about yet, i really do feel sorry for them.

look you idiots who think you have firmware 13.37...

you used a dump of someone who modified the flash with xflash and spoofed the version number. just install xflash, run it, and spoof the firmware back to 1.50 or whatever you want to set it to.

dude, i just did this thing on my 2.71, and it went red, the memory card flashed for a while, then the memory card froze while loading still (the memory card thing stayed bright red) then it restarted the psp and wut happened?

take the umd disc out and then charge it. Make sure there is nothing on your memory stick but the stuff yu need for the downgrade. Charge it more than 50% if you want and then start it and see if it works.

If it's done correctly, no it will not brick. It's just like downgrading a 2.0-1.5 (the steps I mean)

I'm a ba.. ba.. ba... bricker... I "had" a PSP at 2.71 (with and old school motherboard) and a 2G memory stick... just formatted this afternoon. I tried the procedure with a buddy of mine (running 1.50) i got the red screen, eventually went to black then it bricked out... i needed to take the battery out to restart it cuz it wouldn't on it's own. Once i tried to restart it, it just craps out. Is there any hope for me?

Hi I tried and was successful using the downgrader for 2.71 and can attest to the the fact that you may have to make the attempt countless times. I estimated 50 or so, tried three different cards, multiple formats, and just about gave up. It did work for me right away after I removed the battery... so if you are having no luck, give it a try. hopefully it helps!

I tryed my it on my brothers psp and it went from 2.71 to an 1.5. It took me about 6trys but it works. Just Have an 32mb stick as they said to lower bricking chances. I dont knwo about the UMD drive but i took it out and made it much easier and faster if ur psp messes up. I had a full battery. Just keep trying till you get a red screen if not wait a few secs remove battery and retry. If it works you will get a blue error screen. Basically telling you. Your psp files are corrupt and/or deleted and your psp will restart then it will restart to an 1.5. Thanks Alot its gonna make my brother extremly happy as I have my 1.5 for a while. Thanks alot !!!!!!!

As one of the original 1.5ers, Its great to finally see 2.71fw users welcomed to the Homebrew world. Its a massive breakthrough in the PSP Hacking scene, and if anything push the value of all the current PSP's on the market by quite a bit. people who are bricking it must be doing something wrong. I couldnt get it to start at first and it kept freezing and turning off, (needless to say every restart was greeted with crossed fingers and me repeating "please, please, please, please, please, please, please, " mercilessly in my head. Anyway i took out the battery and fired it up and went straight to a red screen (almost had a heart attack) The memory stick light flashed for a while then it stayed on and the psp crashed and turned off....the whole process took about 3 minutes although it seems like forever when a brick is a possibility

when i switched back on it said something about my settings being corrupted and to press circle, it restarted and then wooohoo, 1.5 for me

it worked for me, i hope it works for you too.

For everyone who ended up with a firmware version other than 1.50 this is simply because the DOWNATER folder that you had wasn’t a “clean” dump (meaning it was from a 1.50 PSP that had custom firmware) Simply download a program called X-flash. Run that program on your PSP and go to the 9th option. It should be something like “APPLY FIRMWARE VERSION 9.99 SPOOF” Press left until the “9.99″ changes into 1.50 and press X. You should be all set then.

anyone else a little disappointed with the public results? i mean i've never seen this many reports of bricked psps before. maybe theres really no "safe" way to downgrade. maybe sony intentially put the exploit there and somehow knew about the high risk of bricking your psp and did it to show to teach all of us homebrewers a lesson. i dunno. either way, i think that the homebrew community is guna lose a lot of people (and psps) in the next few days. It does work. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS. I downgraded my PSP, it had 2.71. I dont know about 2.70. I got my 32MB Sony Memory Stick Duo that came with the PSP (it seems to give better results), formatted my memory stick, put the files I needed into the mem stick. Opened up the photo viewer. In less that a minute, BAM I had 1.50. If you follow the directions CLOSLEY, theres a slim chance it can go wrong. As for me and my other friend, it both worked for us

If your a smart person and can follow directions.

If your scared, like I was, then just wait, maybe they can polish it up a bit. All in all, this is the happiest day of my PSP life, even better than when I bought it!

2.71 (w/o TA-082 user) welcome to the world of 1.5. I bet this downgrader version is much more safer than the 2.5/2.6 downgrader coz u dun need eloader to work with. Just make sure that your psp has sufficient power supply on for that crucial part of the downgrading process, after that you will have that magical firmware.

I missed seeing this when I first checked my PSP, but after seeing the example on the "about" page, I do see the imprint under some metal bracket looking thing on the left side of my psp. I have not downgraded yet.

Hej me got 2.71 , could someone plz give me some better instructions,

1)Copy the files inside MS_ROOT to the root of your memory stick.

2) Wait someone with 1.50 to pass you a folder called DOWNDATER and copy it to the root of your memstick.

So 1) I put the d.bin file in MS_ROOT and i put the hw.tif file in photo.

IS THIS CORRECT ?

I found a complete 2.6 downgrader zip on another site and got the downloader folder out of it. I followed the instructions above 'et voila'... I'm in with the in-crowd with a 1.5 PSP.

I'll probably upgrade to 2.6 so that I can play Socom online and still use the GTA exploit for the emulators. I have no interest in ripping off software houses with copied PSP games and there are no companies losing money to emulated SNES games.

Works prefectly fine here! took about 12 attempts.... but red screen came up left it for about 5 minutes PSP turned itself off, then I turned it back on, restored settings, waiting a minute, psp restarted, then installed 1.50 update... waiting for install , worked rebooted now I have 1.50 and devhook emulating 2.50 :)

Hello all!

For a while, I messed about with homebrew on 2.6 with the GTA hack. It was fun an all but... well I got bored and never thought it would develop much more through the GTA hack. So I upgraded to 2.71 and within days, there was a downgrade possible on the 2.6. I was frustrated, but decided I would not update again. Fast forward a few weeks and I feel completely vindicated. These developers deserve all the credit in the world.

To summarise, I've just successfully downgraded. It took about 6 attempts until I got the soon-to-be-famous red screen. A couple of minutes later I had 1.5 on my PSP!

I've got some serious catching up to do...

Well guys and gals. When this all came out, i sat back and watched for quite a while, of course wanting to make sure that this was working well for many. After a few hours i was convinced.

So lastnight before I went to bed I decided to give it a go, ALL WORKED PERFECT! I was scared b/c i don't own a 32mb card, but i do have a sony 512mb one.

My steps:

1. Formatted my mem stick

2. Restarted psp

3. Copied the DOWNDATER folder to root

4. copied the exploit files where needed (i.e. rw.tiff in PHOTO, ETC

5. Restarted psp by removing battery

6. Powered back on after installing battery

7. Ran the exploit by opening the .tiff in the psp photo viewer

This is awesome news.

I'm already running 1.5 when I downgraded from 2.6 but this is awesome news for the homebrew scene.

Sony will again fix this in the next October upgrade but by that time I really hope Devhook comes back onto the scene. I don't mind if the guywho made it doesn't pack the SCE copyright files. There's other ways of obtaining them

Well, I think this is good for 2.7 users and for the homebrew community in general but there aren't any 2.7+ PSP's in stores so if you have one, its your own damn fault and I don't think you should have a downgrader.

Omg!!! guy's I was so scared to do it because I was confused if it was a TA-082 and apparently for all you have a PSP with the number IC 6001on the top left not RIGHT!!! Inside your UMD drive you good to go it's working :) :) :), I’ did downgrade my PSPS 2.71!!! a minute a go ..My hand still shaking because I was so anxious or I’am so happy know!!!! Not sure but danm… I’ve done it!

follow my TUTORIAL:

MAKE SURE YOU:

1: format the MS before do anything (mine was a sony1GB)

2: reset your 2.71 setting before!

3:put the 1.5 downgrader file into the Root of MS

4:put the downgrader to you root of psp same as the dongrader are! you have a message to overwrite the PSP folder It's fine because include only the Tiff exploit so it's ok :)when you got all file ready!

5: take off the battery! (previously fully charged!!!!)

6:plug back the battery again
