2.70 Firmware Features New Album Art System

We received notification via email (thanks, yoyoboymartin!) of a new feature in Firmware 2.70 that went unmentioned by Sony regarding the MP3 player. Before, in order to assign album art, you had to use a program like Sonic Stage to embed it within the MP3 file. Now, with the new version out (2.70), you can simply put the JPEG file in the same folder as the music, creating the art for the playlist. Very useful when trying to organize your music, but more importantly... Could this lead to a new exploit? While it would be pretty silly of Sony to make the same mistake twice, all you hackers out there in forum-land will surely take a look at this and see what you can do! Meanwhile, we'll keep you posted here at QJ.

» whats?

so, what if your running sonic stage? it doesnt put music in the music folder. then where does the jpeg go?

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 11:10
» 2.60...

ummm i dont know about other people who put music on their PSPs...but when i rip "legal" cds' into my psp (fw 2.60) i already have the album art on it....and i could easily remove/add different album covers by changing the settings on the folders

» @17

"N00b" and "newb" both mean "newbie", which means a newcomer to a particular field.

"N00b" is the "1337" spelling of "newb".

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 11:27
» Oh yes

"N00b" is sometimes taken to be offensive, in some cases. :/

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 11:30
» tsk tsk tsk.........

Don't you realize Sony wants us to use homebrew. Just think about it .......people that try to hack this in their free time have been able to do it. They have probaly 15 workers working on one small feature and they have been programing for a long time and have jobs don't you think they can outsmart a couple of people that are fooling around with it (no offense to anyone that takes programing very very serously, just in general). This helps keep people interested in the psp why do you think you come back and check this website everyday? Let me answer that HOMEBREW. The only reason they don't make it easy is because they try to avoid piracy and it wouldn't be exciting anymore if sony gave up.

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 11:30
» def

n00b being not knowing the rules, hence the offensive

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 11:30

first of all, you could do this before, so this is no big deal.

clever sony, real clever.

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 11:41
» so

well the art thing is really gay but the new exploit if found would be awsome! and why would anyone want to upgrade when 2.0+ is at its peak right now?

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 11:41
» PSPSPSPSPSPSPS

It means he plays his PSP in the shower. Fanjita couldnt hack a clock to tell time

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 11:46
» Been there

This feature has been in the PSP at least since 1.5 because all I do is throw a folder.jpg file in with my mp3's and it picks it up.

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 11:50
» wtf

umm wtf i got 1.50 and can view album art by just dropping my music into music folder,so how the hell is this anything new??????????

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 12:04
» wow hahahaha

wow man this is old old old i have album art on my 2.0 even before i upgraded to 2.0 all my music had album cover this news is noob news lol

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 12:16
» isn't new

it isnt new but it could lead to an exploit

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 12:32
» yes it is new

the album art may have shown up before, but it had to be embeded in the mp3. the new system allows you to place a jpeg file in the same folder as your music and it will show up in the music group/folder menue, this means that you dont have to put the actual album cover in.

what expliot would do is trick the psp into thinking the program is a jpeg file and once you enter the music menu it will launch the progam and /allow for homebrew loading or even a possible downgrade to 1.50

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 12:37
» music subfolders

the album art is for music subfolders. so if you rip a whole cd to ur memory stick and put it in a subfolder, the jpg shows up as the subfolder

by mbslrm - 2006-04-25 12:42
» Cool.

I'll try it later.

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 12:43

how do u put album art on 2.6

just put the image under the artist folder?

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 12:44

» HomeBrew Easier

With a flash player wouldn't homebrew be easier? Couldnt many of the emulators be done with Flash?

by Stiletto - 2006-04-25 12:50
» #45 said it well.

I knew what the post meant.......these newbs at english need to reread the post...lol..... i understood it.

And I am thinking the same thing sorta......

did Sony finally "allow" homebrew to work and to help them out made the memstick bootable (in a sense)? this way Sony isn't supporting piracy but yet at the same time it allows homebrew to flourish.

Whether Sony will admit to it or not I dun really care.....proof is in the pudding orrrrr was there some sneaky programmer from within who wanted the homebrew to thrive and knew that the homebrew scene would discover this? hehehehehe either way....this should show a new birth of some kickass programming...eh?

by RaiderX - 2006-04-25 12:54
» ummm....

I always put my own album art on ym mp3s anyway, and thsi only works if they are in a subfolder and it only works on the folder, not the individual songs, so this is not that big a deal and I can see why soyn didnt mention it

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 13:07
» Embedding Pictures Into Songs

To embed pctures into songs just follow this guide:

1) Open up iTunes and drag your art into the box required.

2) Connect your PSP to your computer and open the MUSIC folder.

3) Drag the song from iTunes into the folder.

Easy as that. Hope this helps any questions.

» 2.7 Blows

Well Flash Player on 2.7 sucks... The homebrew Flash Player runs faster and has just as much compatablitiy, but the SONY flash player is slower than dialup even when booting a .swf off the mem stick ( Seems sony wanted people to shutup about flash player and "Hampered theirs to get updates)

by Timale-Kun - 2006-04-25 13:55
» Avaible with Atrac

Album Art is already avaible with atrac songs on 2.0+, using Sonicstage 3.4 to convert MP3 to atrac3, but if the MP3 one make noise in the scene, it should be different i guess^^

by Stiletto - 2006-04-25 13:56
» oh

backslash is not acceptable....lol....... well how bout this then:

/PSP/COMMON

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 14:00
» ok.....................................

they say that this new update fixed problems with memory cards of 4more than 2gb having problems but they announced that kinda late meaning they did that part carelessly , maybe now memory sticks of more than 2gb will help on making an exploit.

Another thing is that you can put on your site or space the codes of a 1.5 firmware as a tiff image and load it off from the RSS , that sound like it could work.

by Stiletto - 2006-04-25 14:02
» hhhmmm

What will be going in there I wonder...or is it used now?

not sure if i deleted that folder by accident but i copied PSP from duo straight to hd and then formatted memstick and now i have COMMON......

by capagotks - 2006-04-25 14:07
» re #66

you could be onto something. But sony could have patched it up. its a good thought though, i'll try it.

but then again, rss feeds can only use a certain image file type, (not sure which one exactly, possibly jpeg) and im sure there is another image file that can have code written into it, not just .tif, so it could be possible

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 14:31
» Gasp!

I came up with this first! I posted it as a comment on the 2.70 Reaching US and Japan post, and I even wrote a thread about this is Speculation! (Well first in hacks, then it got moved.) O_O I WAS THE FIRST OOOOOONE! Nobody listens to Dread! T_T

I totally agree with the comment from 13.

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 14:47
» Why are you here?

If you're going to hate, don't come here and bring your trash. Go to some other slow psp hacking website and have fun jerk. I agree with 54 all the way, someone wants this to happen. I'm not sure the GTA exploit was what he was expecting tho :P. Go Fanjita! The eLoader is fine now, unless you've found a breakthrough that can access kernal mode and downgrade to 1.0 :)... try some of these suggested ideas floating around and prove em wrong or right!

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 15:03

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 17:28
» Image based expliots

They won't work as the tiff exploit was patched in the libtiff library which is used system wide, same with libjpeg.

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 17:46
» soooooooooooooooooo

is sony toying with us to hack the firmware so they could find out the problem? or do they WANT us to use homebrew?

..........

only time will tell

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 17:59
» good point 77

we could just be helping sony patch wholes as we find them... oh well a few months of homebrew is worth it before the next great game comes out and you have to upgrade.

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-25 21:38
» not jpeg

you put gif image in folder not jpeg. jpeg doesn't work.

by StormLord - 2006-04-25 22:27

yea he is, seeign the headline "NEW EXPLOIT IN 2.XX!!!!!" is exciting! But if sony gave up, at leats we coudl ahve all that homebrew and features, so its sorta exciting for a while, but then just a buncha games in the end.

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-26 04:50
» NO HACKING YET.....PLEASE

Come on people think about it, sony just released a crap firmware update with old flash player,

why?

well use your brains and not your *****s. They released this firmware with crappy and old flash player so that sony could see how hackers get hombrew working in a much tuffer firmware security that is 2.7.

When a hacker find a way to hack 2.7 then sony will eventually block that, and it will be done when psone emulator is available, meaning no hombrews ever again.

If you are trying to hack 2.7 or have hacked it, i suggest you keep it to yourself until 3.0 firmware is here, which should have psone emulator and the latest flash player, and of course games like tekken and battlefield.

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-26 13:47
» sony is playing with us

sony is trying to get us to hack this version so they can fix it in the next and theyll keep doing it till every single possible hole is fixed and theres is no possible way to ever downgrade or play homebrew again and then after that sony will be bought out by Microsoft and the entire gaming industry will laugh at them for trying to put an end to the one thing that is selling the psp
