Sony has released US firmware version 1.52. Note that as of now, if you upgrade to 1.52 firmware you will NOT be able to run homebrew. For all of the 1.5 users out there, we recommend to not use this upgrade if you wish to run homebrew.

New changes in this release include:
– UMD™ Music can now be played under [Music] in the home menu.
– Strengthening of system software security.

If you are interested in upgrading *cough*, you can do it here.

Let me be the first to say, im updating. Seeing as how homebrews are and will always be only for 1.00. They may eventually crack 1.5 but by that time there will be patch 1.71 and newer games will need it.

I didn't buy my psp to play emus, and frankly i don't see why everyone is in such a rush to try and downgrade there psp.

You mean the swaploit? Thats not a crack. Its a good way to mess up your memory card.

I'd rather save my time and load up Zsnes on my computer or laptop.

Yep, I've been using the swaploit A LOT lately for testing and all and both my memory stick/memory stick slot/psp are fine. Sleep moding it during emulation and all. Not to say that I know for sure that it's perfectly healthy, but personally, I've played all the UMD games that I'm interested in at current. It's going to be awhile before I'm really hankering to give up revisiting all my favorite NES, SNES and even GBC games in turn for some port of a ps2 game.

yeah, I'm all for not updating personally...the UMD music doesnt look like its gonna hit the selling scene for a while now...plus re-living old skool moments, playing your favourite games on the consoles (emulated consoles lol) that you grew up with is wicked, and the fact that its all in the palm or your hand is even more mind blowing!!! I say crack on with the homebrew, you peeps are doing an excellent job with these emulators etc...the psp is the ultimate portable media console...can u tell me which other console has the looks, the specs, the ability to play movies, music and excellent quality games, and be able to emulate almost every console and handheld below its generation??? ain't possible, because it doesnt exist, sony have out done thereselves on this one, although they are abit silly sumtimes(the firmware update to name one lol) they havent gone much wrong with this psp...anyone agree with me?? or am i talking rubbish? who worships there psp? :-)

I don't have any problem with updating but right now it isn't necesary. When a Browser from Sony comes out I will be the first getting the new firmware. Swaploit isn't good, it will damage your memory stick for sure. (My hope rests in Paradox making a bios hack...)

I agree with you, ~Tw!NkL£~, I really really want to fully love and appreciate this nice little Sony handheld, but dammit, I'm afraid that the UMD games alone aren't going to do it. Mp4 and mp3 playback is a nice step in the right direction, but rather than releasing stupid firmware updates that just add to the "security", I'd rather see a little be of a bone/incentive tossed out there for people to update. "You get to play the latest games?" The "latest games" are the launch games and the REAL ones that catch my interest aren't even coming out till the fall. Gonna have to do better, Sony, if you wanna snag more people into downloading those firmware updates. Shoot, even a firmware-included calculator or SOMETHING - "security" update and UMD playback? Mmmm, sounds mighty tempting, but ummm.... no. :P

I'm sorry, but did the US 1.5 firmware NOT work with music UMDs previously? I recall using the sampler disc which everyone recieved in the music function, and it worked pretty well imo.
