Category 3: Operating System
For game consoles the OS might not be the most important part of the system, but these days as machines get more and more advanced that once subtle role becomes a lot more pronounced. When it comes to the PS Vita, what we see in terms of overall look is pretty darn close to the standards that folks like Apple have set with their touch-based icons thrown in with some apps. Thanks to the 2.0 firmware update in particular, the web browser got a sizable jump in functionality that by HTML5 standards puts it as one of the strongest mobile browsers in the tech market. Not to mention we also have a much more complete connection with aspects like social media that have come to dominate everything we do in the modern world.

Now we've come to the XMB which hasn't exactly gained the favor of anyone besides hardcore Sony fans. Sure it's a solid way to bring all of your various media types together, but no matter how you slice it the layout still involves a lot of ridiculous scrolling for those that have a lot of content. Both critics and consumers agree that this aspect aloe made the whole experience feel just a little bit clunky, so it will probably be the last time we see anything like that on a Sony device. As for extra features and apps, I think it's better to call them all non-existent. The web browser especially was a crying shame for design that should almost never have been included. Also, even though social media could have very easily been done during the PSP cycle it never was which is kind of sad. All in all, time has proved the PS Vita's OS is a lot more suited for playing games and doing other stuff too.
Winner: PS Vita
Since this site did start out focusing on hacks however, I figured we should also take the time to consider both portable's hacking and homebrew scenes on the next page!

When playing PSP games on Vita the battery lasts as long as the extended 2200 mAh battery on the PSP so they are par with each other.
Not to mention that Vita plays both PSP AND Vita games.
The only thing I dislike about the Vita is the touch screen and the lack of Vita games...

I remember when I was fisrt introduce to the hacking seen. Oh the memories! :) I remember getting together with friends showing new homebrews, games and such. I remember PSP Rhythm 8, all those songs, the interface, the samples and the users. I remeber wishing to play starcraft on the psp, and living that dream. I remember wrighting and running scrips on LUA. I remember Dark_Alex`s exploit and many, many gifts he has giving us. Ah, yes the good old M33-6! I respect you Dark_Alex! You gave my miserable childhood a light at the end of the tunnel. When he mysticaly disappear from the seen, and PSPGen walked in. I never changed my CFW, because I was loyal! I didn`t want to change ANYTHING on my psp. I still got my psp as it was back then. He really was the best.
I hope the PS vita will come half as close to the expiereince I had with the psp. Cause I doubt I will ever live a expirence like so ever again.

Gotta say, though, they both can ALMOST handle console level games (PSP-PS2, Vita-PS3) so that's pretty cool.

My vita is used for new games only since I've already filled my 32gb card.
My PSP Go is hacked for PS1 games. My PSP 2000 is hacked for emulation and homebrew games.
Which is better? I like the environment of the Vita, but I like taking breaks from being always-connected with some retro PSP goodness too. Couldn't live without either. Or my 3DS or DS!

One reason I'll never get the Vita: you can't remove its battery. I can easily replace the batt of my PSP-3K by lifting the cover and removing it. I suppose you have to bring the Vita to a service center to have the batt replaced when it's worn?
