Category 1: Hardware
When it comes to both of these systems, there's no real denying the fact that they were both impressive feats for the time they were released. Still is there one pick out of these two that seems to do just a little bit more given the era they were birthed in? The original PSP's 333MHz processor that we have all come to know and love was a little bit slow even back in 2005, but that didn't stop the unit from using its GPU and 64MB RAM to do some pretty amazing things. For the first time we really did have console gaming on the go. By many standards, the graphical difference was only slightly less than what we saw on the PS2 and we loved every second of utilizing that hardware.

The PS Vita on the other hand has come in at an age where mobile technology is in its prime. The 2GHz processor unit in particular goes toe to toe with some of the fastest devices on the market including the Galaxy S III. Not to mention with 512MB RAM alongside a modern GPU, this once again has set the standard for raw power in gaming portables. By standards, this time around we have a system that measures up to exactly what we see on PS3. In fact, we can even play some of the same games on both systems through the cross-play initiative. In that sense then, it seems that even given era constraints the Vita is a console that overall does just a tiny bit more with the power it has to give us true and absolute "console gaming on the go."
Winner: PS Vita
Of course hardware is just the tip of the iceberg, because on the next page we will also consider the game library.

When playing PSP games on Vita the battery lasts as long as the extended 2200 mAh battery on the PSP so they are par with each other.
Not to mention that Vita plays both PSP AND Vita games.
The only thing I dislike about the Vita is the touch screen and the lack of Vita games...

I remember when I was fisrt introduce to the hacking seen. Oh the memories! :) I remember getting together with friends showing new homebrews, games and such. I remember PSP Rhythm 8, all those songs, the interface, the samples and the users. I remeber wishing to play starcraft on the psp, and living that dream. I remember wrighting and running scrips on LUA. I remember Dark_Alex`s exploit and many, many gifts he has giving us. Ah, yes the good old M33-6! I respect you Dark_Alex! You gave my miserable childhood a light at the end of the tunnel. When he mysticaly disappear from the seen, and PSPGen walked in. I never changed my CFW, because I was loyal! I didn`t want to change ANYTHING on my psp. I still got my psp as it was back then. He really was the best.
I hope the PS vita will come half as close to the expiereince I had with the psp. Cause I doubt I will ever live a expirence like so ever again.

Gotta say, though, they both can ALMOST handle console level games (PSP-PS2, Vita-PS3) so that's pretty cool.

My vita is used for new games only since I've already filled my 32gb card.
My PSP Go is hacked for PS1 games. My PSP 2000 is hacked for emulation and homebrew games.
Which is better? I like the environment of the Vita, but I like taking breaks from being always-connected with some retro PSP goodness too. Couldn't live without either. Or my 3DS or DS!

One reason I'll never get the Vita: you can't remove its battery. I can easily replace the batt of my PSP-3K by lifting the cover and removing it. I suppose you have to bring the Vita to a service center to have the batt replaced when it's worn?
