Undiluted Platinum - Preorders, Pro-Installs, Solder Info, and more on the way!

Undiluted PlatinumAccording to a friend of QJ, Undiluted Platinum (the world's first PSP modchip) could be here very soon, so its time to start thinking about placing your Pre-Orders! For those still in the dark, Undiluted Platinum was announced to a skeptical audience on May 26th, boasting features such as: bringing a bricked PSP back to life, open source development, button-press firmware selection, along with many more features.

Accompanying the good news of a near shipping date, joins the news of the soldering involved. Don't expect to install this without some work, as there will be "23-24 wires to install." If you wish to do this install yourself, be sure you have (or know someone that has) advanced soldering experience. If you're a soldering pro, expect the project to take a good 45-60 minutes. With how small the space to work inside of the PSP is, it will likely be very tricky fitting that many wires inside of such a cramped area.

Word is starting to gather about various international stores where you can purchase Undiluted Platinum, but we're glad to bring you news of the first and only North American outlet for UP, ModChipStore, will not only be shipping Undiluted Platinum from the U.S., but will be offering several professionally installed packages:
Although initial supplies may be limited, ModChipStore will be frequently restocked as the need arises. Additionally, they will begin shipping Undiluted Platinum the same day they receive their first batch. If you want to send in your PSP for a professional install and be first in line, they are already accepting shipments. While you're there, you might want to see what other PSP accessories you might need in anticipation of Undiluted Platinum - their prices for 1GB and 2GB Pro Duo memory sticks ain't too shabby, especially if they'll be shipping you Undiluted Platinum anyways!

Whatever you choose, please be aware that there is a chance of breaking your PSP in some fashion any time you open it up. Add a soldering iron, wires, and your open PSP, the chance that something could go wrong is very high. For your PSP's sake, it is best to have someone else install the Undiluted Platinum if you have limited or no soldering experience. We at QJ.net take no responsibility for any damage done to your PSP while trying to install this modchip.

And be sure to stay with QJ.NET, as we will have hot images, video, and install diagrams in the near future!

Ugh. If a pre-modified PSP is $450, then the installation is probably $150 by itself - if I REALLY wanted this modchip, I couldn't install it myself.. so I'd have to find a MUCH cheaper installation.

» I don't need one now.

I don't need one now that the new devhook allows me to play the newer games. The only ones I wanted to play were battlefront 2 and katamari and they work now. I got them for my birthday and didn't want to upgrade. Plus it lets me use all the 2.6 stuff too. devhook just saved me $90 plus the hassle of installing the modchip.

» Not very appealing.

Why would you want to buy a $500 PSP? You could just get two PSP's(1.5, 2.7) for that price and have all of the same features..

The chip only seems to have a point for people with bricked PSP's. Even then, $100 is a wee bit steep..you bet they're taking advantage of everyone with bricked PSP's in this situation. I hate to say this, but I hope some clones come out within a few weeks of release.

by Nietzsche - 2006-06-09 14:02

No jimmy, you should hope for a solderless chip . . .

I'm going to wait & see what fun/homebrew will arise from this (I have a 1.0, 1.5 w/devhook, and 2.7, so I don't have a need for this yet . . .).

» What a complete ripp off!!

You can definately purchase new 1.5 Psp's for much cheaper than that and then you can throw Devhook on it. If they want customers they should make it a competitive price. You can just buy an extra 2.7 Psp for cheaper than that damn Modchip install. Instead of thinking as far as their bank account contents perhaps they should remember what the homebrew scene is all about. I will pass on this one and stick to Devhook which is competitively priced...................it is free and will support 2.6/2.7 UMD loading soon I hope. At that price they know where to shove their Modchip.

#115

U have to remember that sony will block devhook from running in the near future on 3+. The chip will let you carry on homebrewing for as long as u like still experiencing the luxuries of the latest firwares.

Im going to pay the $100 for the chip but no installastion, thats a rip off in my opinion, ill do it myself, i think ive go the skills, if not ill ask my one of my engineering teachers or somthing.

The problem is that it blurs the line between news and advertising, I would not have a problem if they stated it was an ad, but doing it like this questions their motives. For example, is the price of these MS really cheap? The article tells us it is, but if you scroll back to old news you will see that it is not. Do you trust the news? Probably most of the time, Do you trust ads and commercials? Probably not. See my point now?

#117: You said that after 3.x sony will block devhook; if it works right now, why buy a mod chip when it will cost less when its needed? i suggest waiting untill there are clone chips with better features, or when they drop the price. Devhook does all (or almost all) of the appealing features of the Undiluted Platinum.

I stood my ground when later firmware was released after 1.5, now 1.5 has devhook. Look before you leap people. Good things come for those who wait ;)

by the-matster - 2006-06-09 16:13
» leave the noobs and girls alone

Look knowbody is asking you to buy the chip if you do then good I think you should just wait awhile and see if its worth it right now with devhook's advancements there really isnt a reason to get a chip due to the fact that there isnt any 2.7 required games yet. Also if you really want a psp 1.5 bad enough there are webistes that only charge 289 dollars for one. If your psp is brick the buy a new one or a 1.5 one on ebay. Having said that a chip is pretty sweet and so what if sony figures something out the chip has its own flash replacement

Since I can solder $100 doesn't seem that bad for this chip, if it works. REally though, people should wait for other chips to come out. Like with the PS1 and s chips. WHen the first ones came out they were expensive. Then over time more chips were released and the prices came down.

a PSP retails for $200 now right?

and the undiluted platinum modchip will be about $90 (according to qj.net: http://pspupdates.qj.net/index.php?pg=49&aid=47330)

so thats hardware for $290

$450-$290 = $160 !!!

qj.net says "If you're a soldering pro, expect the project to take a good 45-60 minutes. " (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Undiluted-Platinum-Preorders-Pro-Installs-Solder-Info-and-more-on-the-way-/pg/49/aid/53291)

so that should mean that these guys can do it under 45 min, lets say 30 min when they get the hang of it.

so we got $160 / .5 hours = $320/hour

$320 an hour !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !! waht the hell, I wouldnt pay people $320 dollars an hour to work for me , at least not to do some soldering

Anyone who's ever used a computer *should* know that the latest version of a program or hardware driver is most oftenly the best and most stable version (unless it's a beta test, etc). Thinking logically, I updated my psp the day I got it when I noticed it had an online update feature in the options panel. I never found out about homebrew until the same day eLoader was released, and once I did learn about it I started using it. Buying another psp just to ever so slightly expand my homebrew library sounds like a waste of money.

Personally I think this mod chip is too expensive, especially since I'm not sure if anyone I know can solder well. Maybe once this thing becomes [much] cheaper or a clone is made I'll buy it.

» Remember this

There is no point in anyone calling Sony B****** for all of the firmware updates and homebrew / piracy blocks because without them we wouldn't even have such a great portable. So before one is so quick to diss Sony just remember where the Psp comes from. I am very thankful to Sony for them creating such a great piece of kit. I am also thankful to the devs and hardware hackers for without the other, one wouldn't exist and vice versa. They make it, we break it lol

For the pre-installed unit:

$200 for the psp - volume discounts

$100 for the modchip - volume discounts

That leaves ~$150 for installation and other costs. The other costs is the one that interests me. Assuming a good cost for them that the installation costs $50 for the time and materials, leaving $100 for other and/or unseen costs seems okay. From a business ramp-up cost, that seems rather low.

Assuming a base 5 to 1 good installation ratio (1 out of every 6 modded units will not pass Q&A), that brings the cost per PSP unit to $240 and the cost per mod chip to $120. Keeping the fixed cost of the installation at $50, but adding to it the 1 in 6 not gaining a profit, brings the full unit cost to about $420.

If all of these assumptions can be generally assumed to be true, the company would only make a total of about $30 per unit. For the sake of being generous, let's bring that up to $50 per unit Subtract from that the general costs of advertising and other hidden factors, I can see them breaking even on this deal.

And none of the above includes what it might cost them for whatever warranties that they might offer. I haven't looked into it yet. It seems rather obvious that the general Sony warranty would be tossed. As someone who is considering buying a unit, I'll be damned if I'd buy a new unit without some sort of guarantee for its lifespan.

All things being equal, the US $450 price tag doesn't seem too unreasonable, assuming that they offer a warrantee for the service.

» Disappointing?

Fortunately, now the first modchip has been released new companies will release better ones than this crap.

23-24 wires to install? My god, this is insane. If you want to make something then make it properly, don't bring us ***** like this and then try to sell it for 100$ LOL... I hope not many people will buy this, it's disappointing you're likely to brick your psp if you attempt to solder this trash. I'd better wait to see what happens but it smells like a rip-off.

» I heard through the grapevine....

that this chip can destroy the main motherboard of the psp over time. You see, the heat and the gasses that the chip gives off eat away at the motherboard. And, over time, the heat and the gasses may eat away at YOU. So, you best watch your back.

In the meantime, Devhook will have evolved to such a point by the time this thing is actually released and 'tested' by the public. Unlike the UP, it wont be $450 us dollars.

WHAT THE F |_| C K is up with the release date? Originally June 9, 2006... One site now says June 14, 2006 (MAX CONSOLE) and another June 16, 2006 and QJ.net saying June 26???? What the F |_| C K???? QJ.net is no more informed than I am!!!

#161 If only you'd used some o that soldering experience on polishing your language skills then ppl would actually bother reading your pathetic posts! Far as Im concerned you're just a geek freak with a soldering iron for a friend. Get a life and stop telling ppl what to do, they can think for themselves!!! As for UP im glad too and QJ seems to have no clue bout the release date... hmmm?

I dunno what you're talking about - we have mentioned no release date. Secondly, there is a time limit on how often you can post. Its clear you have no patience since 60 seconds seemed too much for you, much less take the time to read the article you were going to complain about without reason.

i can't believe another site stole the news word for word from here and made it seem like they got exclusive news. lol. so so sad

» SENSE?

Wouldn't it maybe more sense just to get a new PSP and upgrade that one to the latest firmware version, while keeping your old trusty 1.5? I mean with the cost being close to 500 bucks, it just makes more sense to me.
