Thrustmaster FunAccess Wi-Fi key - No need for Wi-Fi router

Thrustmaster, manufacturers of PC and console gaming accessories have announced a USB WiFi key that allows anyone with a minimum of 512k broadband, with either a modem connected through USB, or an Ethernet card, to turn their PC into a wireless router, and access the internet on any WiFi enabled device - including the PSP!

The so-called 'FunAccess' USB key looks like your average USB storage device, but boasts fully integrated WiFi 802.11g technology. This technology allows you to play online games, download music, videos, and more. You can even connect up to 5 PSP's to the same WiFi hot spot using the same FunAccess WiFi key, and the compatibility doesn't end there. Any other WiFi devices you have will also be able to connect to the Internet through FunAccess, including Laptops and PDA's. Thrustmaster have even created a site designed for psp users, psp.thrustmaster.com, which will be officially online from the 6th April.

There is one downside to this device - FunAccess requires your PSP to be running 2.5 firmware or higher, and Windows XP on your PC. I don't quite understand why this device needs 2.5 to work, as I don't think any of the WiFi protocols were changed in the 2.5 firmware update. Requiring 2.5 may put a few people off from buying it - it's useful gadget if you don't have a wireless router, especially with upcoming online PSP titles, and the rising in the number of PSP compatible websites; but is it worth the upgrade to a higher firmware version?

The Thrustmaster FunAccess USB key is due for launch in May 2006, with the Recommended Retail Price of $39.99.

» not too bad, goona have to buy one.

$40 bucks for a router aint bad.. but why the hell would 2.5+ be required? its a router for a COMPUTER??

i think this thing would be more fun for networking computers more then anything...

Wasn't WPA-PSK with AES added for 2.5? Could be that it uses that

by Shamoo - 2006-04-04 06:48

Basically the same thing as the nintendo wifi USB router but for PSP.

"Wasn't WPA-PSK with AES added for 2.5? Could be that it uses that"

Yeah, that's what I figured.. but they say it supports /any/ WiFi-enabled devices and many will not have support for WPA.

I'm betting 1.5 PSPs will work perfectly fine with it.

You can buy a standard wireless router for like 60bucks

No firmware requirement

» What about DATEL's device`?

I know it's controversial but where's the different to Datel's WIFI Max? I don't see any and you don't even have to have a 2.50 psp (never tested anything below tho.)?

I don't see any advantages in this device except it's from trustmaster who are usually TRUSTworthy

Well price is almost the same too, I'm still glad I bought datels device and to the comment above, I think it won't be that easy that u just plug&surf with it I think it does basically the same think like datels device. Meaning it will make an ICS (InternetConnec tionSharing) for you automatically and in datel's case will install drivers for w-lan cards and hook up a server for your wifi sharing server.

Btw. my name's ThrasherSC2K2 I've only been to lazy to register by now. sry

» Confused???

I don't quite understand why people are all that excited about this... You can buy plently of Routers for less then $40 heck newegg.com has one for like $16.00 after rebate, It's not exactly top of the line but I bet way more reliable then a USB Dongle as it actually has an antenna. To me this product just makes no sense.

That's my 2 cents

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-04 08:48
» sure thing

can anyone recomend a wifi usb dongel that actually works with like say xlink and such? a rather cheap one, since im from sweden i hav no radioshack and such so ebay would be nice. Hampa

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-04 09:01
» Why 2.5?

Just get datels wifi max. it works on 2.0.

by _Mazza_ - 2006-04-04 09:15
» WTF

All wireless adaptors do this, i got a belkin one for a tenner that i use with my psp and my psp is 1.5, this is just a rip.

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-04 09:24
» old news..

you can do this with any USB wifi dongel...

I did this for months using a sweex wifi dongel, before I had a wifi acces point... 1.5 also..

This just includes a manual how to do it...

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-04 10:16
» Rip off!

Mazza and Anon Coward are right, this can be done with any USB dongle or internal WiFi card with the right software.

I almost did a similar thing with an old 800MHz Pentium 3 to create it into an always-on wireless internet gateway (with firewall) and file server. I ended up buying a wireless modem-router insted because of the thought of how much electricity the computer would use being permenantly on!

They're just making it a little easier for the less tech-savvy by providing you with the hardware, software and instruction manual all in one box.

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-04 11:32
» WTF!!!!!!!!!

For all those who live in england i bought a cable & wireless usb wifi dongle in argos for about £20 it workes fine even when i was running a 2.0 psp!!!!

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-04 12:00

so does this mean you can go anywhere in the world and still be online like in a car with a router being near?

There is no way for this device to detect what firmware your PSP is running. Period. They are probably just trying to play nice with $ony.

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-05 13:56
» Wait

If I connect this thing in the usb drive of a car's gps system wiould it work? ( think not but if yes it would be nice)

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-06 04:12
» Argos?

#28 : The only wireless USB adapters Argos stock are ones that let you connect to an existing wireless network, that includes the Cable & Wireless £20 one. Getting my hopes up like that :-(

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-07 06:06
» 2.50 req is BS

From the site: "If you have other Internet-enabled equipment with integrated WiFi technology such as a laptop or PDA FunAccess allows you to connect them to the web as well."

Since it allows other devices on, it obviously supports WEP/802.11B. Thus, it'll work just fine with the whole range of PSP models. Technically, there would be absolutely no way for them to discover the firmware version of your PSP, since your MAC address doesn't ever change between versions, and that's the only thing the dongle/router ever knows about your PSP.

There used to be some windows software for doing this with 'any' wifi adapter, but I think it was pulled pretty quickly. Pretty much just a software hostAP. Linux has supported this for a long time. I'm still looking for the 'rare' windows software to do this.

If anyone knows more about said software, say something :)
