Say cheese: Details on the PSP Camera and GPS Receiver |
Ó
Back in May, a funny little attachment which appeared to be a camera was seen on top of a PSP at the E3. Last month, pictures showed the same attachment, along with its cousin, the GPS receiver, was again found floating around on the internet. And now...they're official and soon to be for sale.
At the moment, the PSP camera has finally been unveiled and is set to hit retail stores in Japan by November 2, 2006 for ¥5000 (around $ 43) a pop. Dubbed as the "Chotto Shot" ("Little Shot"), the camera will come with its own software and a carrying case. It can capture still images at either 480x272 or 640x480 resolutions, while videos can be recorded at 480x272 at 30 frames per second for as long as 15 seconds. Using the software "Chotto Shot Edit", you can then apply borders, effects, decorations, background music, and captions to your photos and videos among other things, and all on your PSP. You can then share your pictures and footage with friends via ad hoc mode.
As for the GPS unit, it will retail for ¥ 6000 (around $51) by December 7th but will not come with any software.

first!
but what the gps uses for in psp
well obviously since the GPS wont be coming with any software, FIRMWARE UPDATE! but leave it to the homebrewers to unlock the TRUE powers of both the GPS AND the CAMERA. homebrew video recorder. capable of FILLING your PRO DUO with well over 15 seconds of video at a time. HOMEBREWERS! GO! ::i wish i could code:: :::id do it myself::: -demz
"View specs for the camera and GPC receiver after the jump!" Should be GPS :P
Id say the GPS reciever will come with some sort of mapping software. Otherwise it would be completely useless and no one would buy it. I know sony has screwed us over so much lately but releasing GPS without some software even if its basic would be stupid.
the gps is very cheap! I hope it will work with MapThis!
I was wondering, if for the camera you will actually need to update your firmware to use it (which I obviously won't be doing lol) I was hopeing to see some requirements in this post but meh - Looks just about time to do some googling.
software will be in a fw update?
how many details are we gonna see on this ***** before it is released?
That's a bit ***** for a camera?
1.3 mega pixels...do you guys realize how *****ty that is?
this is just the start for the PSP, soon we will be kicking the nintendo DS ass, all of you who have a DS grow up *****es that is for little kids!
i would buy both of them if they bundel evrything, for 80-100 buks
Great Guys. It rocks! Am gonna buy that. See da clarity. Have a good time. Go n Rock Guys.(Only Boys rock.) Yo Have a nice time son!
1.3 MP camera? What year are they living in? My PHONE has better resolution than that and I bought it over a year ago. Not to mention my phone can record more than 15 friggan seconds of video as well. $43 is way too much to pay for that crap; I could understand twenty bucks, maybe. There is no excuse for it to be anything under 2-3 MP, especially for a price like that.
15 seconds only? thats pretty short
hmm... maybe it wont be in a firmware update but a signed, encrypted eboot from the xmb... no point making a new firmware anyway juz for the cam and gps
What use are 640x480 images? 1.3meg is just not acceptable. My phone takes better pictures and my video is only limited to the size of my mem stick. What were they thinking? :( I could REALLY use a decent camera for my PSP, but 1.3 meg? Keep it. I'm not interrested in anything below 3 meg as the pic's are not even printable quality. So what's the point of having it then...? The GPS however seems much better. I'll DEF be buying that. -mom
Well as most of the true gamers know , the 360 cam was released this week . Upon reviewing it , it is a 1.3 megapixel cam as well . The translation is flaweless on the 360 . Granted the PSP doesnt have the bells and whistles of the 360 . But this 1.3 MP not being enough is more than BS . The transdlation between cam and PSP should be more than adequet.
You guys are gettin' behind in the news...
lol its nt 51$ only for gps ull need a map software 40-50$ + update ur fw ull lose homebrew lolll BTW MapThis is better and ll be alot better i paid mine 80$ free map dowloader software :)

kk.....so the gps is only going to show your location and compus......(DOO! Do0!).......ne one know if it will have like the road stuff.......like maps and voice thing so it will tell you where to turn and stuff like that.....lol my bad dud3s!!
the reacquisition time for gpsslim236 for mapthis is 0.1sec and u still see diff. with 1sec its really slow!
for the Camera the number was PSP-300 for the GPS the number was PSP-290 At first i thought that was the firmware they needed but the camera is coming out before the GPS so now i'm not sure
thats it sony you have pissed me off for the last time, u know perfectly well that the psp can record videos for more than 15 seconds directly to the memory card!!! i cant belive i bought your crappy proudct in the first place, u money frabbing pieses of *****!!!
sorry i meant to say grabbing
>_> Meh, this is better than buying a $200 GPS...and plus $70 for a Digital camera...Oh wait...thats $270...
i was relly lokkin 4ward 2 the camera but a hole 15 secs of video is just 2 much
think of it as a webcam not a digicam. hopefully there will be some wireless video conferencing software coming for it, eithe r from sony or homebrewed. in that case, 1.3 is fine.
sony is so stupid gps for PSP Will be 60 US $ and sony is selling other gps's for prices starting at around $400 How stupidly smart everyone might buy a psp just for that. Maybe even the camera...
I was looking foward for the cam like much other people around, and when I read 30FPS I said "cool" but then read the 15 second thing and it's like "aw, crap" So what's the point of having a GB memory if you can't record a decent video!
I'm confused. Isn't 640x480 more like .3 megapixels. Wouldn't 1.3 megapixels be something like 1280x1024? "dude, am I wrong here?"
im mos definately not going to buy either of these toys (i wasnt planning on the camera anyway..lol) until i get a confirmed that we can use it without updating. i just got my hb running (im running 2.70 on a TA-082 so you can imagine how happy i am that i finally got to play..lol). so i will just sit on it for now until confirmation that we dont have to update, and if we do have to update, until someone figures out a way to use it without updating, and finally until they actually release some nav software for the GPS.
1.3 MP is fine IF the price would be like 20 bucks. However, if they would have let me record a video MORE than 15 freaking seconds I would buy it for 43 bucks. But no, this cam sucks in both ways. :(
"I'd buy that for a dollar"
Its says japan nov. 2 how can i get it in America
"I'd buy that for a dollar" - It's Not My Problem http://www.wasteoftechnology.com/motw126.shtml
GPS and Camera are going to be released only in Japan. We get screwed again.
Those are pretty low grade specs for a camera. but for 43 bux its not bad considering that it is sony were dealing with here. for instance all of sonys other products. ie there cybershots, and there bravia tvs all are way overpriced. btw the release will probably be bundled with either 2.9 or 3.0. im guessin 3.0 because they probably want a bang with the release during holiday season because 3.0 has the ps1 emulator.
i reckon when the gps comes out some1 shouyld make a program so it uses the satelite to pick up tv and view it on ur psp that'd be awesome cheers
they will both need 3.0 firmwere cuz sony are trying to make 3.0 look amazing. and the gps will need the softwear to work thats y there not putting softwear with the gps just anotherway for sony to try and get us away from our lovely homebrew
1.3 is TRASH my phone takes better video than that. *****ing Sony...
33 has a point, sony rips us off again!! they will probally put down the quality even more to 1 pixel to save money (i said pixel not megapixel) so basicly we will gat a small square! :)
hello
i1
does the camera only look at you or can you swivel it so it acts like a camcorder? it looks like it can but its not said anywhere. if it does im sold i dont care what price, sadly i am in australia so i will not b seening it for like another month, or i just buy off ebay lol good old ebay...
