Sandisk announces new 4GB Memory Stick for the PSP!

Sandisk Memory Stick Pro DuoSanDisk answered the call for the growing demand from users of the popular Sony PSP by introducing a 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo. It can store up to 64 hours of MP3 music tracks, 20 or more hours of movies/videos/film trailers, or 4,000 digital still images. Well not at the same time though. The announcement was made at E3 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The 4GB card, which is expected to ship this month, carries a suggested retail price (SRP) of $219.99.

SanDisk co-developed the Memory Stick PRO format with Sony. Last year, SanDisk introduced the new gaming line of Memory Stick PRO Duo cards in semi-transparent neon colors. The new 4GB card is red. Can I say ISO Heaven?

So does anyone know if it will definitly work with 1.5? I know it should and the hard drive works but I just hope this does as well. Anyway yes, this will be ISO heaven.

Im getting one of these, i know there is already a 4gb memory card out, or atleast i think there is, but this one looks so cool and the price isnt too bad...

» too expensive

I buy my real highspeed 2gb memory sticks at ebay for 35 dollars from China's sony manufacturing company and cost me 20 dollars more for shipping and handling so do the math:

2gb sony highspeed memory stick: 55 bucks

4gb sandisk memory stick: 220 bucks

I know you know what is the best deal.

I still think these MSD's are insanely expensive, i wouldn't pay that much just for storing data on my psp.

Yes, "Bored", 2GB is the limit on 1.5 firmware. The new 2.7 update allows for memory stick duo support over that limit.

even though that is a lot of space

i dont think it will be 1.50

compatible

(correct me if im wrong)

it would be alot better if they lowered the price just a bit($10)

then more ppl would buy it bc its about the same price of the psp

either way its still a good deal

We're against piracy...I just posted that because bigger memory sticks are generally used only for ROMs and ISOs. We do not support piracy in any way.

by miktar - 2006-05-10 10:26
» uhhh.... no

Message to the foolish people: 1.5's support up to 4 gigs, as do the rest of the psp's, including 1.0. How do you think the 4 gig datel hard drive works on 1.5? It isn't magic....

So this memory stick will definitely work on 1.5, albeit a bit pricey :/

by None_of_yo_bitniz - 2006-05-10 10:26
» Yes 1.5 supports 4 GB

1.5 supports 4 gigs. How else would the datel drive work? That's 4 gigs. The psp recognizes the datel as a memory stick. Over 4 gb will not work on 1.5, but I don't care, by the time 8 gig sticks comeout, you will be able to buy 2 4 gigs for cheap.

by .. - 2006-05-10 10:27

1.50 is compatible with the 4gig, remember the Datel hard drives? Those are 4 gigs and compatible with 1.50.

» 4GB IS THE LIMIT on all current firmware except 2.7!!!

All firmware can read up to 4GB, 2.7 is 8.

I liek the red color, I might buy this if I find a good deal, the 2GB have been sold for less than $60, so the 4GB might be seen as low as $100. If I see one for that price, I will snatch it right away!

» The price isnt that bad.

I dont think the price is that bad. I mean it will probubly be less on a site like newegg. When the 2 gigs first came out they were about that much and now you get twice as much space. Sandisks original price prediction was around $280, which I was ready to pay, so I'm happy with $220.

Since when did QJ.net support piracy? I thought they'd never mention "ISO", but oh well. 4 Gigabyte will seem pricy but by then i'll be working my ass off :).

by GamingDemon - 2006-05-10 11:36
» Post number 1....

A PSP can support up to 8GB of memory stick so no worries.

by InflamedSpirit - 2006-05-10 11:43
» ISO's and Roms - MOVIES

I would say that the largest files on the psp are usually movie files (full length movies often 500 megs). ISO's can be larger (max 1.8 gigs) but many of them are 400 megs or less. Also, people have been able to delete useless files to reduce even the large umd ISOs.

GB, GBA, SNES, and n64 roms are insignificant in size and are not at all anything to worry about size wise.

Also, for one's so against piracy, it's somewhat hippocrytical to describe an ISO heaven... Pesonally, I think pspupdates should embrace ISO loading of your legally ripped games (ones that you own!). Noone likes to carry umds around and the speed/battery bonuses of reading off the memory stick are nice.

I would get the 4g stick if it wasn't more expensive than the psp! Maybe in a while when the price is resonable (for me that would be $100 or so).

and number 33, 4 gig is the limit. Try a 8 gig on it. it wont work. 4 gig is the limit. or atleast until there is some firmware upgrade that installs new FAT info on it.

So its not ok to say ISO but its ok to say ROMs? WtF!? ROMS are copys same as ISOs

uh oh.... ISO ISO ISO ISO ISO *****ing ISOOOOO!

SUE ME!

You all go on about the "EVIL ISO" but how is an ISO copy different to a ROM copy? There still copys even if roms are old there still not abandonwhare and carry copyright.

I love piracy, ***** is overpriced. If companys put decent prices on things in the first place people wouldnt need to copy stuff.

» About the Datel thing...

I completely forgot about the Datel drive. But, according to the playstation.com FAQ for the PSP, there might be issues with memory cards with over 2gb of free space. I haven't used one myself, I'm just going off of what's posted on the last question here: http://www.us.playstation.com/PSP/Support/TroubleShooting/faq.html

Kinda sucks that people had to waste money on buying a datel harddrive:

1) Bulky

2) Transfer speed limited to usb

3) Seperate cable to attach from hd to usb

4) Expensive

5) Not sure (someone correct me) but did it require a seperate power source?

by jsharrad - 2006-05-10 13:56

um the datel drive isn't usb, it's a microdrive that has an ata/compact flash interface which datel has converted into a memory stick interface.. it's also powered by the psp. the reason it's slower is because there's an actual disk in there and moving parts rather than just solid state memory

» get a NEO PSP PAD!

get a NEO PSP PAD + 4GB microdrive!

neoflash.com makes then, there is a list of resellers like divineo or ic2005

its much better than the DATEL thing, it allows you to put MemoryStick, SD, CompactFlash (/4GB microdrive!) and use then on the psp

it also allow you to put ur rechargeable AAs, its the best to hook everything up! check that people, its a much better deal than the datel crap

yeah #44 is right. 4GB is the 1.5 limit, so 8GB is out of the question, BECUASE the PSP (1.5) uses FAT16, which limits to 4GB. The newer future FWs will support more than 4GB.

ISOs may be legal, if you own the game, or if the original owners abandoned it.

» Answer to #58 (&59) - Gaming vs. Standard vs. Ultra-II SanDisk cards

I asked SanDisk customer service what the specs for the gaming cards are. They responded that the Gaming Memory Stick PRO Duo have a transfer of 1.8MB/sec (that is mega bytes per second). Thier product page for the Standard Memory Stick PRO Duo states a transfer rate of 15Mb/sec (that is mega bits per second). Converting from Mb to MB gives basically the same value. Thus, the only difference I can see between the Gaming and Standard Memory Stick PRO Duo cards from SanDisk seems to be the clear cases on the Gaming sticks. Now, the Ultra-II cards have faster tranfer rates (9MB/sec write, 10MB/sec read), according to the product pages.

One question that I have, but SanDisk didn't answer, is: What is the max read/write speed that the PSP supports for the memory stick? The 4-5x speed of the Ultra-II looks enticing, but if the PSP is hard-wired to only read/write at a max of ~2MB/sec, then the extra speed capability is wasted. Does anyone know if the PSP can actually take advantage of a Memory Stick that has faster read/write speeds, if so what is the max speed that the PSP can support in the card slot? (Any H/W guys here still reading this thread?)

All three types have 4GB models announced, and I just froogled them for prices, and here are my results:

Gaming 4GB - MFG#SDMSG-4096- Not found by froogle...

Standard 4GB - MFG#SDMSPD-4096 - Lowest prices around $160USD

Ultra-II - MFG#SDMSPDH-4096 - Lowest prices around $190USD

yes thats , the psp is capable of holding upto 35 gig on a mem stick duo but first they have to make a stick that size and secondly you may have to think about selling your house $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
