RVI announces 3D screen for PSP

RealView Innovations (RVI) has announced plans to release an attachment that "enhances the perceived depth of the 2D screen image on the PSP." Instant faux 3D, in short.

The attachment is called the V-Screen. It uses proprietary optical tech that doesn't need any software or electronics to render what is described as a "fully 3 dimensional experience" on the PSP. You just slap this baby on and you're good to go.

“The innovation uses special optical components in unconventional ways,” states Eamonn Ansbro, an Optical Engineer who is co-Executive Director of RVI. “No software, electronics or headgear is required. Nonetheless, the optical results are astonishing.”

RVI plans to kick off the V-Screen's launch in time for the holidays. Kinda skeptical about this, though. Stuff like this seems like a sure-fire way to give me a headache. What about you guys? You interested?

that's a technical impossibility, without "some software" on the PSP to alter the output of the image, you cant make a 2D image 3D.

it would only be compatible with specifically designed titles, or, its a lie.

don't buy this product... it will not, i repeat, will not give u 3d vision, all it will do is zoom onto the screen and just hurts your eyes... and they will probably cost around 50 dollars.

your sort of right

3d is created by 2 images taing from two different viewpoints

glasses are normally worn, in order to split the 2 separate images into 1 for each eye

so basically inorder for 3d to work, you must beable to let the brain precieve a different image in each eye

i have heard of a portable 3d tv which did not require glasses, theres several techniques which can be used, and more being found. some may have saw the mind reader which actually reads what freq your eyes are seeing at and then images are set at different freq on screen

so if your eye focuses on an image it can be interpeted

this however would not work the same, point is, new ways are being discovered, dont be too critical over it

also an image would have to be split into 2 images on screen, hence require extra software

basically the best way to describe this is, dolby virtual surround sound, just not quite the same as a 9.1/7.1 surround sound system

dont be too skeptical, but i too doubt this will create desired effect

what i would ask though, is theres a few 3d usb glasses on the market which work well, we may be capable of getting this too work with the psp, ofcourse it would be homebrew only, or quite an interesting hack (cheat device)

How come a single magnifying glass enhances the 3D image?I would like to see it for real, then I might consider believing. But as I can see this thing might turn out to be a good PSP protective case...As "emcp" already said, faux 3d can be created by splitting the image into two,and ,therefore, usin g special glasses. So no optical components alone can achieve stereoscopic image, not to mention "full 3 dimensional experience",unless it is created with the core of a radioactive meteorite fallen from Mars or something...

Without some sort of shader or post-processing to alter the output, this can't do anything significant to an already 2D image to make it seem 3D.

In other words, if they can't get Sony on their side to add something to the firmware for compatibility across all existing games, this is doomed to fail.

And this thing isnt even capturing the video output and modifying it to display on another screen. Its just some kind of fancy glass lens.

ummm... you just said exactly what the guy above you said, just in a more roundabout way... and he's exactly right... without some sort of software, there's no way this would work. I bet its like those fireworks glasses that have nothing to do with 3D, but make certain colors "pop".

could also create some sort of parallax effect that could be perceived as 3d.

# anything can be doneurherenow 2009-07-21 08:27
with mirrors

you guys are too sceptical. Haven't you seen those cool bowls that are mirrired on the inside? You drip a penny into the bowl and it looks like a 3D hologram, magnified projection of that penny floating on top of the opening.

I find it very easy to believe that 2 mirrors at slightly different angles with 30~60fps animation can make your brain percieve a 3d image.

# We've had true 3d since metal gear acid 2Techni 2009-07-21 08:43
All this is, is a lens that splits the image using tiny prisms so odd numbered columns of pixels go left and even ones go right

as someone who loved the effect in mga2 i cant wait for more games to use this, i dont know why more didnt use the solid eye

The Solid Eye was a bit flimsy being cardboard, but the 3D effect was awesome. You can download stereoscopic pictures and view them with Solid Eye too. It's surprising that a solid plastic version was never made for future games.

I've been working on a 3D dungeon crawler in Lua scripts that requires Solid Eye. It's still a ways to go but once the wireframes are done I'll post up a demo.

# Sounds like a scamChevyJackson 2009-07-21 12:36
It seems to me like either their "3D" effect will be poorly implemented, or it will just make the screen look 3D, not what's actually ON the screen. If it's not a complete failure, then it's magic.

well what if this device split the image and then put it back together creating the 3d effect. Why can it not be done?

one layer with mirrors which would cause the blurred 2 images, and then the next layer would be the glasses that puts it together so it appears 3D.

I think you all are jumping the gun on this one. Wait and see =]

# VFX 3d Adapter clone?MitchenX 2009-07-21 15:04
I wasted $100 on some gizmo called the VFX Virtual 3d adapter, it advertised it would "make games and movies appear in 3d" using a video conversion box and some special glasses... absolute BS. All it did was make the games look weird as hell and hard to play.

this is obviously just another cheap scam to try and pull money from innocent morons. myself included, although i learned my lesson the first time.

I had one of these types of devices for my Game Boy Color a loooooong time ago. It just made it bigger and easier to see. I imagine itll be the same for a psp. But it also looks like it attaches to the USB, so maybe it works like the TV adapter, and plugs into the usb, converting the picture into the screen thing?
