UK Mag - Image 1Here's something that caught the eye of just about everyone back at QJ. It's a scan of what appears to be a UK PSP magazine that has appeared across the Internet. The magazine claims to know what dates the EyeToy, GPS, PSOne emulator, Video calling and PS3 connectivity will come into effect.

Although we cannot be sure what the dates actually mean as we don't have a scan of the full page at our disposal, it is safe to assume the magazine has either predicted these dates or got them from a source inside Sony. According to the page, the PSP EyeToy adaptor will be the first of these new features to be available to the public, coming in as early as September. Then comes the GPS adaptor in October, followed by the long-awaited PSOne emulator also in October, along with video calling. PS3 support will bring up the rear in what we suspect will be a firmware launch around November.

This all seems great, but the question on the tongue of every homebrew fanatic out there at the moment is one of two: Will we be able to use the features somehow on firmware 1.5 (hopefully through using something like DevHook), and will these firmwares be compatible with Undiluted Platinum?

Its a sure bet that Sony will try their best to make 1.5 users upgrade with all these updates, and I can just see Sony making an order for an Undiluted Platinum modchip now to test out it's functionality and figure out how to stop it working on future Sony firmware releases. Lets just hope that another developer will come along and rescue us,  just like Fanjita and Ditlew with the eLoader, MPH with his downgrader and Booster has with DevHook.

Update: Thanks to Link88 sending us some scans by "logic 3 keyboard", we've got some more complete images of this article from the UK's Official Playstation 2 Magazine, as well as some new details. Most of the information comes from the 2006 PlayStation Business Briefing which states that 15 million PSP's have been shipped across the globe, which they claim has made it "the fastest selling console ever".

Aside from the peripherals mentioned above, Sony also plans to make the PSP Browser capable of watching streaming video over the internet, as well as the possibility to save these videos to the PSP for later viewing.

UK Mag - Image 2The GPS peripheral will interestingly enough have an impact on various games! In the next version of Hot Shots Golf the GPS will be used to determine your location and allow you to download game content only available for that area. The big surprise here is that Ken Kutaragi said that there are GPS-ready games "on shelves now." Who knows, you may have one of these GPS-enabled games in your PSP right now. The magazine even hypothesizes that the GPS add-on could be used to track down nearby PSP owners for multiplayer madness.

Of course there's a bit of talk about the PSOne emulator, mentioning that you'll be able to download and save games to your memory stick using Sony's "E-distribution system." And as you can probably see clearly in the image, 7,000 PSone titles will be available for the PSP, including favorites such as Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Final Fantasy VII & VIII, Silent Hill, and Tomb Raider.

And last but not least, there's a slight mention that the PSP will be able to be used as a controller for the PS3... and while that's expected, I would suspect that it will be more of a peripheral than a "PS3 controller with a screen".

as 'skunk' said, this is the official playstation magazine and the whole article in the mag talks about the future releases, these are official dates set by sony and they are most probably correct because the magazine is official.

# Don't upgrade...Guest 2006-06-25 09:24
If you are at 2.6 or lower... Do not upgrade... The reason for these flashy updates by Sony has the sole pupose of killing the homebrew and emulation scene for the PSP... I (Unfortunately) have a 2.6 firmware... But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy my PSPs emulators, and homebrew games... Eyetoy maybe a good reason to upgrade... GPS... no thanks... PS1 emulator... I am happy with my N64, Snes, Sega, NES, and gameboy emulators... And I dunno what video calls are... So don't upgrade! keep homebrew alive! and above all... Tell Sony what we want! We want homebrew, and are PSPs functions not limited! Well thats how I feel... P.S. normally im registered... forgot my pass though...

LOOKING FORWARD

"Perhaps the most thrilling add-on for your PSP is another October firmware update which will enable you to play full PSone games.

Phil Harrison revealed at the Game Devlopers Conference 2006 San Jose, that the update will let you boot games from your memory stick and grab a PSone emulator via sony's new E-distribution system

And while your hand-held will provide a link to playstations past, it will also be ready to hook-up to your PS3, due for a simulaneous worldwide release in November"

so it looks like the ps3 update will be in the October's firmware update

i'm sure glad to hear this. All this sh*t will require the latest firmware, of course. Also, it's very nice of $ony to, after someone spends all that time and money getting a modchip bought and installed, try to stop it from working in the next firmware update. So, when someone switches the modchip to their new firmware, ALERT: FIRMWARE WILL STAY NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO. F*CK YOU, YOUR MODCHIP, AND YOUR HOMEBREW

Homebrew that, for free, developers have made for us. I've had enough, i'm going to $ony's forum and complaining about this. I've got all the backup i need.

In October, Want that PS1 Emulator and TBH, I currently have FW2.6 and as much as I enjoy the Megadrive, The lack of compatability, the long boot up time (have to go through GTA) kinda wears off the effect, Looking forward to just getting games like MGS VR Missions which should keep me busy, PLUS the next GTA will also be out in October and No Doubt that will require an Update.

Also, Please No-One say "Well It's your own fault for upgrading to 2.6", When i Got my PSP it was already at 2.01 and I wanted WMA compatability.

were these dates not implied through the slides at the sony conference? it's easy to guess October for the PSP add-ons, so that it doesn't interrupt with PS3's launch the month after, and brings a larger audience to the sony's portable table, eventually KOing them with PS3 compatibility.

as for the september release date for the eyetoy, im excited. finally, my psp will serve as something useful besides a music player and enjoying classic games on the go through homebrew.

# UP modchip stays workingGuest 2006-06-25 10:48
Sony may figure something out that modchipped PSPs won't run UMD's, accessoires or whatever anymore. But writing to the modchip seems to go directly without the need of the PSPs firmware. So flashing older or modified firmwares is always supported. This meens that smart developers can always make a sollution that new UMDs and accessoires stay working on UP-PSPs (eg. Epsilon BIOS, Undiluted Platinum: Homebrew on 2.71 news Jun 23, 2006 at 08:28PM by Jamie M.)

Why doesn't Sony like to support homebrew? I just don't get it. Homebrew doesn't even affect the PSP in bad ways, it's actually helping the PSP. Without homebrew, PSP would be struggling badly.

I already upgraded to 2.71 anyway as I was getting bored of playing old games I played ages ago, and want to get a hold of new games (which are surely going to require newer firmware), so these news sound good to me... I'll be happy to buy PSOne games, as long as they're cheap (no more than 5 bucks)...

Hmm. I would bet that the chip will last and EVENTUALLY have an updated firmware release that enables all the functions along with the chip (I don't actually believe they have cracked 2.60+ encryption). It might be a while. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there also some new prx's in the 2.70+ updates? Something like usbcamera.prx or another? ;)

Also, the PSOne games were already stated to cost $15 dollars a pop. So you can blow the cheap ps1 games idea out your butt. :( If the UP chip overcomes these challenges, even I being a 1.5 user make consider installing it. If the epsilon firmware actually IS real, then I won't need it as devhook will be likely to quickly catch up.

# the chip should waitGuest 2006-06-25 15:32
I say the Modchip should wait till after all this goodness has come out, that way sony won't be able to block it with these upgrades, so you can have the chip if you want, and the new firmware to run PS1 games, and video calling and whatever else sony has planned.

With the new hardware, they may not have cracked the encryption, but rather found a way to make the psp decrypt it with the rest of the firmware for certain versions. Sony really can't block the chip. Microsoft couldn't do that either. Whether invisible mode or just an update, it will overcome any method other than a hardware change. It would have to be revolutionary for Sony to do anything that would stop the chip for very long.

Sony can't block the modchip. It's impossible. Also, you can have two firmwares. One on your modchip, and one on your PSP. That means your PSP can have all of Sony's new updates and the modchip will have 1.5 (or whatever). So stop saying crap about Sony fixing it/not updating, because with the modchip you can have the new firmwarez AND homebrew. You don't have to wait for firmware cracks because you can have two.

@37

the last issue of the official psp guide book is late coming out but there is a hint in vol4 that the next issue "we'll have the world exclusive first play of WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2007"

but Sony have not submitted any new demo disks to the BBFC the last one was submitted on 28 April, 2006 which was for the demo that came with the mag in this article

The thing is, there is no way for Sony to know whether you are using a modchip or not....they cannot write a program that checks to see if there have been soldered connections. The only way they can tell is if you are running a modified bios, then connect to some online Sony service so they can run a checksum (see if it's exactly the same as official firmware) and if it doesn't pass, ban that MAC address or something....but since it doesn't use a service like live, there is nothing to worry about. Even less to worry about if you have 1.5 on your original flash and use UP to run 2.7+ flashes....as long as they are the official flash Sony cannot tell if it's being run from a modchip or not......the only slight little bit of a chance would be with memory addresses, and if the modchip created different addreses, but then the PSP wouldn't know where to look for the flash so nevermind...anyways, if UP is all good, everything should be all good....

" the GPS will be used to determine your location and allow you to download game content only available for that area."

That's just a lame gimmick, you don't need GPS for that, the web browser is enough (the server can easily track the user location from the hotspot's I.P.)

It would interact well with that Passport app though...

about the modchip and about sony blocking it or not , isn't it odd that being something illegal sony din't stop it , I think this modchip is in fact made by sony saying they give up to homebrew and now to make money and not make the psp a loss of money hardware lets just make money with this modchips and abandon the psp to the ps1 emulator who will give us some more money , well I think sony could have done that , there has even been news of sony making individual companies to buy copyrights for low prices ( cause if they know it's sony then they will charge lots more money ). I think people should wait , hackerelite and his team are working alot on finding an exploit to 2.7 and he will so you people should wait before buying this modchip.
