PSP Camera seen at E3

Here's the first shot of Sony's upcoming camera attachment for the PSP. This shot was taken by journalists at this years E3 gaming expo in LA. To me, it looks just like a smaller EyeToy, but it does fit in well with the PSP's styling, and should look something like this when it comes out in September.

It looks like it will eat up the PSP's battery life too. Most UMD games can get 4 hours out of the PSP whilst on the lowest brightness setting, but I'm willing to bet that this peripheral will half that.

"Most UMD games can get 4 hours out of the PSP whilst on the lowest brightness setting"

I don't think so buddy. Did you buy your PSP at a junkyard? I mean common, 4 hours?? more like 8 especially at the lowest brightness setting.

My advice to you; get a new psp. You know, one actually made by sony.

Are you stupid as hell? No way can you get 8 hours out of the stock battery on low brightness with a UMD. 4 is probably with a not-so-often spinning game aswell.

by Bob - 2006-05-14 07:59
» XD 8 hours, hehe

Thats the worst Joke I've ever heard. It doesn't get 8 hours just sat there on the lowest brightness setting. Never mind while it plays a UMD.

I still don't see how this is going to be put into games though. I can see why people will want to use it as a Camera, but whats it going to do for games? Check how much your smiling?

More like 8 hours on lowet brightness, and that's an average. I get about 10 hours on Lumines.

» God

Why is there always someone compalining about something (realising that he is now complaining) Why can't you just talk about the camera add on?

Camera add on could be good, but hopefully they will listen to some of the suggestions here. I doubt it'll be high res though, probably 640x480 (0.3megapixel) but they might make it lower so that it fills the PSP screen.

by Bocho - 2006-05-14 08:18
» Don't you get it guys

Of course you won't be able to play the same games you play on your PS2 with the PSP Eyetoy. One thing is for sure the DS has Touchscreen with a stylus, the PSP has a camera that will sense your finger without even touching or even worst scratching your PSP. Nice comeback $ony.

by . - 2006-05-14 08:21
» .

no one has a "special" psp.

playing games that use umd too much, you will have between 3 and 4 hours with max brightness and sound.

even if you set the brightness to the lowers, sound in the headphones and a game that doesnt read the umd much (any puzzle?), you will have 5 hours at most.

playing music is normally more than 5 hours if you are on phones, since the screen gets turned off, but use the speakers and itll be less again.

so i'd say the average would be about 4 hours.

by vice - 2006-05-14 08:30
» i got a question

i remember an article way back when that said that sony is going to come out with a new battery that lasts 2 times as long as the other, we use now a lithium ion battery and they said that it is a methanal ion battery. so what ever happened to this so called battery or is it just bull? i mean its only practical to come out with another battery so that developers can use the full power of the psp.

by Slacker - 2006-05-14 09:34
» Can't wait.

Of course the psp will read 8-9 hours when nothing's happening, but once the umd's spinning, and the games' playing, that estimate drops dramatically.

And as for the eyetoy, this is something i am definitely looking forward to.

by InflamedSpirit - 2006-05-14 09:41
» Battery life

If you take care of your battery and have it fully decharged before you charge it (if you do this always), the battery life will be much better. The psp's estimate isn't usually that accurate and I can get 6-8 hours on my psp. Note that this is without using UMDs (homebrew, movies, music, or self ripped iso's).

The camera addon is rather dumb. Why would you ever need a camera on the psp? It's even less useful than a cell phone camera (which probably most psp owners already have).

by Frip - 2006-05-14 09:47

by Chainsaw - 2006-05-14 09:51

If you think the battery life is to low, the buy a second one and the problem is solved. A second battery is cheaper than an UMD game... Camera? Lets watch what for games, applications and possibilities will com for the camera... Maybe a cool thing, maybe not...

by DarkSide666 - 2006-05-14 09:53

playing UMD's i got about 7 hours with the brightness at medium and volume in high...

» awkward

if it is pointing toward your direction, and we want to take a picture of something in front of the psp, how will we know what we are taking? It would be highly awkward to turn the psp backwards and take a picture without a digital guide to go by. Sony could easily fix this problem by making this eye toy 180 degrees rotational. And it can use the psp screen as a display guide. Otherwise, i would'nt want to take a picture turning my psp backwards.

» Music on my expirience

I have 5 hours of school and I always have my PSP with music even BEFORE going out and AFTER arriving home, so I listen to my music for about 6-7 hours, and my PSP's always at 40-60%. I don't use my volume on the max, close, but definetively not on the max.

So my guess is... around 10 hours?

by hurr - 2006-05-14 16:50
» My thoughts:

Batery life wouldn't be a problem for me. People complain about 4ish hours being low, yet I can rarely find more than an hour or occasionally two to use it in a given day.

One issue is that it protrudes from the psp. It won't fit in the case with the camera attached and I'd be scared to put it in my pocket in the first place. Idealy, the UMD reader wouldn't be there and there would be a camera in its place, along with more batery space, memory, or something of that nature.

And, of corse, the firmware updates will be hell. I love my homebrew. ;_;

I hope this can take pictures (at least 2.5 megapixels) and record videos too! Hopefully you can also point it in different directions by rotating it because it would be kinda stupid not being able to do that. DS has touchscreen but PSP has camera and most likely be able to use it somehow in games or something, even though I don't see how you can do that when the PSP's so small and not all people have the TV Tuner thing or w/e. Nice Sony haha.

The camera is 1.3mp. It will be used for online and offline multiplayer gaming with a small box in the corner of your camera. It is like a display picture for playing games like SOCOM. There will be no interaction with games, like the previous eye toy. The camera will require an update of 3.5. This was a webcam altered into a psp camera. The usb port was swapped around with the laptop attachment. The camera will not power save and the battery will hopefully last 5 hours if all goes to plan.
