PSP Camera isn't that good, says reviewer

Well, Gamebrink's got themselves someone to review Sony's Chotto Shot camera and software, and it seems that he's not very impressed with the product.

For the most part, the review is informative as it enumerates all of the features of the Chotto Shot, from the different video filters and tweaks you can do to the pictures, to the options for viewing images in Album and Slideshow modes. While those are all good points, he also says that those same things are bad points because the editing software doesn't really add anything substantial to the mix.

His biggest issue, however, is with the camera itself. Like it or not, the Chotto Shot is only a 1.3 megapixel camera, when most camera phones these days do actually trump that in pixel power. The videos, while nice (as you can see below) don't really look all that good, even if you can edit them.

Still, we do think it happens to be something worth trying, if only because it tries to do something new. If they release it in the US and UK, hopefully they'll add more goodies into the package to make it worth our while. Of course, if you have one of your own, then let us know how you find it.

UHMMMMMMMMMMMM

THEY NEED TO REVIEW THE CAMERA USING THE 3.00 FIRMWARE VERSION, SINCE IT IS BETTER QUALITY AND MORE OPTIONS VIDEO-WISE oh yeah,,, 1st~!
by - 2006-12-20 21:55:59
it's not that bad

I think the videos look pretty good on the PSP. It's cool how you can go into different modes for photos like sketch mode and distortion. I don't use the editing UMD (it's all in Japanese or something).
by - 2006-12-20 22:10:03
I like it

I like it, it's only $50 and it doubles as a mic for Talkman. The video is great and like it's been said, the UMD sucks but with the camera option in 3.0+ it's easy and cool.
by - 2006-12-20 22:17:30
With 2.82 it sucks

But on 3.00 & higher the quality is much better especially the video at highest quality it looks great. Also it gives you better resolution on 3.00 1280x1024 i think it is while 2.82 only gives you 480x272 as the highest. Well worth the price to me
by califrag - 2006-12-20 22:24:30
i like it too

i just got mine and started DH'ing 3.01 so i could use the xmb options. i like it - the quality is what you would expect from a 1.3 mp camera but for $50 what more can you ask for. i haven't checked the 1024x768 size pics on my computer yet - only the 480x272 but i was satisfied. the video is pretty good as well. i like some of the effects like "sketch" but I think the "toy camera" effect is pretty useless! ;P hopefully they will develop more for them. there are already people modding the camera to make it night vision (or at least IR sensitive) so who knows where the chotto shot will be used next. maybe in homebrew? the api's or functions or whatever have already been decrypted - so someone is workin on it ! it's not a $800 DSLR but for $50 it's a handy on-the-go, fits in your pocket camera... i take my psp pretty much everywhere so now i have a camera (that is better than my cell camera) too.
by blackmobb - 2006-12-20 23:26:34
Wrong

AlphaCananogram, if you upgrade your firmware to 3.0+ the quality will not get better, the megapixels stay the same no matter what firmware you have.

reviwer hired by microsoft

1024x768 1.3MP is damn good quality for somethign smaller than your DLSR sorry you have a *****in plasma and wont settle below 1080p by teh way, went into t-mobile store today, almost every cam phone was 1.3 MP some go upto 2 maybe whoever said the psp cam sux is thinking the psp cam is supposed to cost 600? or 1200 on ebay?
by - 2006-12-20 23:34:59
dawgs

it seems that with updates it improves the cam. so i guess the zoom can b improved to and prob the rec time can be extended. i dont heve the cam yet but i will have one eventually.
by - 2006-12-21 00:02:50
Right

Firmware 3.0 removes restrictions like the 480x272/640x480 resolution and 15 seconds for example.
by - 2006-12-21 00:11:08
question

ok i know that you could take good picture and video, but dose it have a mic so you could record sound with your video or use the mic to do other stuff?
by - 2006-12-21 00:58:31
.

yes...
by - 2006-12-21 01:00:43
.

And who the ***** is gaybrink?
by - 2006-12-21 01:08:21
Irony

The irony is that if a lower quality 320x240 pixel camera was released for the DS, everyone would be raving about it.
by - 2006-12-21 01:19:29
I think its pretty sweet

i dont have a digital camera and i always have a psp around and i have a 4gb stick and a 3.0 fw i can make videos and make pictures and listen to music and watch videos and play games.. im pretty happy... shure more megapixels will be nice but im not really complaining
by - 2006-12-21 02:00:12
Pretty neat for the price

The camera itself is definitely not what u can call high-end. Come on, it's only fifty bucks, what do u expect? Actually, whats making the price high is the UMD editing software. A nice little web cam would only cost around 10. In my opinion, the software is a pretty good add-on, but could do better with some more options, and whats with the 15sec recording limitation? After 3.02 firmware emulation, the photo shooting has some options, too. The best selling point I guess would be the nice widescreen view u get with the psp (even though its not really get much more in the picture, just cutting off the top and adding a bit more on the sides). With 3.02 firmware, there's no 15sec limitation for the video recording. For 50 dollars, I give this little psp gadget a 9 out of 10. Now all we need is a phone and touchscreen function (or a good keyboard) ^_^

.

you live in america? your mobile phone cameras are mostly crappy - over here in britain, the majority of mobile phone cameras are 2MP+ mine is the sony k800i cybershot phone, has a 3.2 MP camera and there are many others with similar resolutions, a few even with 5MP! for me i have no need for the camera...i can just use my phone. if it was 3+MP i would deffinetly get it!

...

Very, Very True!
by GaveUpTomorrow - 2006-12-21 07:19:13
No Thanks...

I agree with your take on the camera, but I'll pass on a touch screen/phone option.. (though I'd take a keyboard that plugged in). Touch screen ads nothing exciting, and theres no way I'd hold a phone as big as the PSP to my head. I though phones were supposedly getting smaller, not bigger :p

Great comment.

1.3Mp is fine for the PSP screen and the web.

Some of your just dont realize the PSP camera is made for portability. You will never upload lots of pictures in 4MP+ because that takes too much time. Just about every person i know who has a 4MP+ camera never uses it for the web, because with broadband connections, it still takes several minutes for one picture. So people drop it down to lower resolutions in order to make it reasonable to upload several pictures. The PSP Cameria is perfect for people who like to myspace, as you can upload pictures and post videos easily. While your phone may take 2MP pictures, you will be spending more time trying to upload them then I will with my PSP camera.

3.0+

its called FIRMWARE 3.0+ GUYS
by - 2006-12-21 09:28:30
have it. like it.

it's cool. i'm not disappointed that i bought it at all. the xmb options in emulated 3.02 make it worth it for the small price i paid. i mean it's $50. what the f*** do you expect for $50? a 8mp camera and hd dv cam? jesus. i hate reviewers like this. obviously bias for his own agenda. you have to take into factor other things besides just quality. who the f*** has heard of gamebrink before anyway? so they're suddenly the authority of all technology review? pffft. f*** that. just buy one for yourself and make your own opinion. you don't need as*holes like the reviewer to tell you what you should buy.
by - 2006-12-21 10:04:47
It could be better but 50$ is good.

Well is 50$ but they at least should include an eye toy portable demo. I like it anyway.
by - 2006-12-21 10:34:39
wow

Yo thats b#ullsh#t the camera is fine.He needs more light in his room. This 1.3 mp camera is 10x better than my 5.0 mp camera. How its possible i dont know but it is.This camera is a lot better than this reviewer said it was.
by nilzxx - 2006-12-21 14:34:08
***** THIS

***** THIS CAMERA!! U ONLY GET 14 SECONDS OF VIDEO, WHICH MAKES IT USELESS. MEGAPIXELS DONT MATTER, BECAUSE THAT DOESN'T MAKE THE CAMERA BETTER: THE LENS IS TOO SMALL AND IT BARELY HAS ANY ISO, WHICH MAKES THE QUALIY SUCK ASS. (YES, IM A PHOTOGRAPHER, AND I KNOW WUT IM TALKIN ABOUT)
by - 2006-12-21 15:45:45
Stfu nillz.

Ok Nilzxx, you might want to take into consideration that it is a camera for your psp. not a camera to go out and take stunning artistic pictures with. Its for more of the on the go kind of shooting. instead of carrying around your camera gear you have your psp and a tiny attatchment. And BTW... Lay off the caps lock.

UnitedStates

when is it coming out for the US?
by - 2006-12-22 04:36:41
eng

your waiting for the Camera to come in English?!!! or do you mean the Edit UMD that's come with the camera ? if you use Devhook then no need to wait for the English UMD , coz later on you can use the ISO.
