Gear4GEAR4, manufacturer of iPod accessories, just informed us about their newest product - a speaker system for the Playstation Portable. The company claims that its SonicBoom speakers are a vast improvement over the sound of the PSP's original speakers. The SonicBoom comes with two speakers (2.4W each) and one sub-woofer (9.6W) and being a handheld accessory, it's all designed very compactly. Despite the small size, the high definition output is supposed to fill whole rooms with the sound of your PSP's MP3s, videos or games.

A two-metre-long "Freestyle" cable allows you to freely move their PSP in the room while the SonicBoom system is connected. Alternatively, you can fit the PSP directly into the SonicBoom. Using it while the PSP is being charged should be no problem either.
The speaker system utilizes normal headphone outputs, so you can connect it to a variety of devices, like iPods, laptops and other sound sources.

The SonicBoom will retail for £49.99, which is about $95 - quite hefty for "just" a bunch of miniature speakers. Personally, I don't feel the need to use my PSP as a stereo - I'm satisfied with a pair of good earbuds which are a lot less pricey. Nonetheless,  should anyone reading this pick it up - let us know what you think about it!

dirty pool...

What a bias review... This is even worse than QJ.Net's normal writing. The thing hasn't evn come out yet and it's already a waste of money, according to you. Maybe you don't play music through your PSP speakers but hey, there are alot of people who are just looking for an alternative to the logitech (or comparable) speakers. I'll wait to see it before I pass judgement. A link would be nice too...

I guess people really buy this overpriced s*it

Why are these compact speaker systems so expensive? Does a small wattage amplifier and a couple tiny speakers cost that much to make? I saw one the other day for an iPod for $200 without the iPod! If you buy this s*it you have way too much disposable income. Solution: Buy a real stereo with audio inputs for a lot cheaper and get a headphone to RCA cable. But what if you want to take it with you? Use the f*cking heaphones you spoiled bastard!

Look

http://www.gear4.com/product_detail.php?products_id=201 Kinda high price. I would rather just hook the PSP up to my stereo and this thing is not all that portable either. Pretty cool none the less.

The y shaped cord is way more portable

and can be used to hook up to any thing with audio outs.

looks good

that thing would look pretty damn good on one of my white psp's but i think this is still a little expensive for a speaker. i would rather buy expensive headphones that this speaker.

thanks for the pics #9

that thing is wayyy to big. what would really be cool is a modded pair of uber internal speakers, obviously that sort of thing wouldn't give as good of sound as externals but I am sure you could install better speakers than the originals if you knew what you are doing.

subwoofer

#12 yeah, let's mod the internal speakers first. my suggestion: take out the stupid umd-drive (who needs it at all?) and build in a subwoofer. this would kick-ass ;-)
