Micro Memory Madness - Sony's new Flash Memory Format

Ó

Memory_stick_micro_mediumAs if the massive amounts of Memory Stick formats werenÂ’t enough, now Sony is complicating matters even more by adding a new design into the mix – the Memory Stick Micro (M2). About a quarter of the size of  the PSPÂ’s Memory Stick Duo, the main feature that Sony is touting on this one is its “controlled eject function to prevent users losing the media”. So in order to make it harder to lose theyÂ’ve made it even smaller? Genius.

What does this mean for the PSP? Given that the M2 has been designed as dual-voltage media, it is compatible with the Memory Stick Pro line of products so we could see a “Duo Adapter” at some point in the near future. Even more appealing is that thought that the release of a new format will drive down prices on the expensive Memory Stick Duo our PSP’s desire. The M2 will be available in 256MB and 512MB versions in March, with the 1GB stick following behind in May.

There would be MANY issues on formatting a Duo with FAT32. Anything that doesnt support FAT32 formatted memory sticks wont be able to use them. So that means if your camera works with the stick now, and you decide to convert it to FAT32, it wont work in the camera anymore unless Sony updates the firmware on the camera as well.

A device meant to use FAT16 will in no way be compatable with FAT32, both are different paritions and are not compatable with each other. So it makes no sense for them to make 8GB duos. its not worth the problems of using FAT32.

Are you people claiming stuff "like this" has been out for a year or whatever **** you're claiming?

Do you mean Xd memory cards, almost as equally small. Just not sony.

That's definately targeted at the cell phone market and not much else. The mini-SD cards haven't been used for anything else as far as I know.

These types of memory cards are what they use for cell phones with iTunes, especially the new cingular ones.

This nothing new, this memory stick has been aorund for at least a year now. the rocker cell phone had this kind of media in it to save mp3s and stuff.

Good thing to know is that you have to take out the battery in the cell phone to access the memory card. And even then its housed in a metal holding that you have you pull open like a door and the media slides out of the door.

Its also very very expensive. Not worth the money.

^ You do know that nothing over 4GB will work in the PSP because of FAT16 constraints, right?

Kirbysuperstar - Sony is going to release a firmware update that fixes that, supporting a better file system I assume.

i saw some confusion among some people about the release of the 4gb and 8gb memory sticks. according to some of the sales reps at CES, Sandisk is planning a mid march release of a 4gb memory stick. Also, Sony has announced that that the 8gb will be out this year, with some predictions leading towards August. i can't wait for the 4gb though, hopefully we'll see a big pricedrop in the 2gb which is what i'm still waiting for

Kirbysuperstar, if you connect the PSP to your computer you can format the stick with FAT32, which can easily handle 8GB.
