Cliche it may be, but great things do come in small packages. At the on-going Consumers Electronic Show in Vegas, Sony just announced its latest memory stick product - the 8GB Memory Stick PRO Duo. Yep, you read that right. Eight giga-whew-bytes. More room for 'brew, emulators, music, etc.

8GBAside from coming in with an adapter for devices with a standard-size memory stick media slot, it is also armed with MagicGate copy protection technology. Well, to keep this simpler, here are the specs of the said memory stick:
  • 8GB MSX-M8GS Memory Stick model
  • Weighing in at just two grams
  • 0.79-inches wide and 1.22-inches long
  • Sporting the ten-pin Serial Memory Stick interface
  • 1,500 images in 10-megapixel, fine mode
  • More than 18 hours of video at 768Kb per seconds in MPEG4 compression
  • Can hold a collection about 2,000 songs in the MP3 format at 128 kbps with an average of four minutes per song
8GB Memory Stick PRO Duo will become available beginning February for US$ 300. It can be purchased from Sony Style (both online and retail stores) as well as authorized dealers in all states. Well, like we said, good things come in small packages, only they also usually come with a heavy pricetag.

Idiots

Does sony not realize that the bigger they make their memory sticks, the more isos will be used? I don't think anyone would have 8 GB worth of photo albums and music now eh?

When can we expect to get these on eBay?

No sane person is going to pay the RRP for a real Sony Memory Stick, so when are these gonna be on eBay? I really need one of these, 4GB doesn't cut it anymore.

Where do I pre-order?

Any sites taking pre-orders yet?
by - 2007-01-08 05:42:03
Firmware v2.81 on up.

Not to mention that any firmware starting from 2.81 and beyond was "upgraded" to accommodate for the 8GB sticks. Anything below that can only use 4GB.

does yer ISP really slow or is it you that are stupid?
by - 2007-01-08 06:31:50
.

in the beginning, about a year ago the estimate was that these would cost 3000$ or more, so i think the price is actually really good, but i'm waiting for a cheap one on ebay anyway :-) my first memory stick was a 1 GB one, that was 150$, in a store, now i got a 4 GB one for 80$ or something, since this is the capacity of 8 * 1GB(150$) this could be 1200$ ... if you think about that, this price is actually pretty good...
by WarLord - 2007-01-08 06:54:56
C'mon guys

Just ignore them, they're just kids after all. We've all been immature at some point in our childhood. Let them be, they'll change as soon as they can pay for their own bills.

Oh my

Why would one need 8gigs or storage on a PSP ;) Now alll they have to do is make divx, ogm, mkv supported..and we have a reason for 8gigs of education material
by - 2007-01-08 07:14:28
A complete ripp off

Anyone who buys a Memstick that costs as much as the atual Psp needs their brain examined. This is a complete ripp off and is exactly why so many people are always bad mouthing Sony. The fact is, if this wasn't a propriety format you could get this sort of portable storage space for about $80-$100. They will never learn!!

by spring the 8gb will be selling for $100 or less and the 16gb will be out before the summer and the 32gb before the yr ends. I told you guys the 8gb would be out jan-feb and now I told u the dates for the 16-32gb. thats alot of porn :)

by OiD - 2007-01-08 08:48:18
Theres more than isos

Theres music, video, images, homebrew. Not to mention that the MemoryStick is used in other devices such as cameras, audio players, mobiles etc.
by OiD - 2007-01-08 08:55:08
Sell me one

I'd like some 100$ 8GB CF plz
by - 2007-01-08 09:03:23
£155.07

If you got this from an American site and you were in the UK, it is only £155.06, (quite cheap I think). But I will still wait a few months for a price drop.
by - 2007-01-08 09:04:45
..

. sony make hundreds of devices , not just the psp. cameras , mp3 players, mobile phones etc etc etc. they arent making memory sticks just for the psp , they are making memory sticks so they can make money on each one sold. besides, the psp can only address 4gb of memory so the current 4 gb sticks are the most memory u can get for it.

quality..i might have to get one of these when they drop down in price, they'd have to be at least below £100 though... think how many ps1 games and isos you could fit on it :D
by - 2007-01-08 09:28:35
8gb a start

This is great i do photography and i like using my psp for listening to music and playing some emulators. So just using a 7.2mp camera and listening too alot of music i'm still going to fit it to the brim. P.S The iso people would you shut up, now every freaking noob is looking to do it and the psp section is most active thread based on how much people can pirate. DAX and others gave us the gift of custom firmware and backing up own umd for assh0l3s on web to wreck it by forcing sony to develop a ultra strict force of encryption. WE GET IT, YOU KNOW HOW TO PLAY ISOS SO YOU'RE TEH COOLIEST 1337 HAXOR LETS ANNOUNCE IT EVERY POST. THERE IS SEVERAL THOUSAND PEOPLE ON MULTIPLE FOURUMS OVER NET THAT CAN DO THE SAME SO STFU!!!!
by - 2007-01-08 09:30:30
lol

300 bucks? and 4 months later it'll be on ebay for 150-200. bout a year ago i bought a 2 GB stick off of ebay for 60 bucks. when in a store it was still 120.
by - 2007-01-08 09:40:15
That might be their plan?

Maybe that's why they ARE making bigger cards? Atleast they'll make money off them then, if no one bothers buying their games :/
by - 2007-01-08 09:40:25
No

With the comming of firmware 3.00 the limit on size of 4gb was made obsolete. From firmware 3.00 and up ther is no limit to the amount of memory one can have.I guesse sony never thought booster was going to crack 3.00. Lets face it Dark_Alex is great and all but with out Booster we would really have no custom firmwares. IN my list Booster is first then Dark_Alex but dont get me wrong i do appreciate every thging DAX has done.
by - 2007-01-08 09:43:49
Idiot

Well lets think of the PS3 did people pay less for them on ebay? Although thes may not be in such high demand ther will be more than retail price on ebay abd dont forget about all those fake mem cards out ther they can easily make an 8gb fake card. Iwould be more carefulll when buying a memcard on ebay

by - 2007-01-08 10:16:05
this is a rip off...

$300 bucks? I'll pass... i rather get two 4gb for $80.00 each. Also if I'm gonna pay $300.00 for storage it better be a 80gb harddrive for my psp. If they ever make one!
by Kayne - 2007-01-08 10:16:22

first off alright! psx isos and such here we come!! muahahaha... and screw those who are against it... they are the same people who says that videogames kills (like "jack@$$") and other religious zealots confusing the political landscape for u idiots who go why not buy two 4 gigs? Cheaper than one 8 gig.. the point is so that you dont have to switch mem sticks all the time
by - 2007-01-08 10:18:32
dip*****

dark alex has made the custom firmwares 2.71 SE A till 3.03 OE A... booster has almost nothing to do with his actions. other people who have made cf's where harleyG(without him there wasn't a recovery mode)... ow yeah btw 8gb...ok that can pass but that little good-for-iso-only-because-you-can-never-have-that-much-photo's-or-music costs more then the psp itself... who would nuy such a thing... i mean for his psp not other compatible devices

..

yeah but all the one on ebay are made of cheese
by - 2007-01-08 10:27:49
.

It's probably fake, check if it supports magicgate.
by - 2007-01-08 10:39:44
WTF

$300?! That's so damn ridiculous! It's more than a PSP! It's more than a Wii! It's WAY more than an 8GB flash drive! There's no good excuse for this. Sony wants excess profit to make up for the money they lose on each PS3 and a way to make people pay to use ISOs on PSPs. Maybe good excuses for them anyway, but not to consumers. I bet they'll make over $100 profit on each 8GB MS they sell! (though that's just a guess)
by - 2007-01-08 10:43:50
For Movies & Music

There are 4GB nano's and those get filled up easily. Include movie files which are 700MB in size for high quality and you can easily need 8GB's space. QUESTION: I know newer firmware's (2.81) can support more than 4GB MSPD. But what will happen for people on 1.5 who uses Devhook to emulate fw3.xx? Will the psp at least see the MSPD enough to load devhook? Or will it not recognize the mem stick all together?
by - 2007-01-08 11:00:23
YEAHAAAAW

I wonder how many "LEGIT" backed up games you could fit on there, hee hee hee, I'll be getting one of those babies.
by - 2007-01-08 11:24:52
.

So all the people who have 80GB iPods are using them for warez? ***** off idiot.
by - 2007-01-08 11:33:41
what a price!!!!!!!

This is great news, i was just telling someone yesterday i wish the psp had a hard drive and now a 8 gb wow. Im sure the price will go down in time. BUt how can u price a memory card more than the psp........More than some cameras 2........Wasnt their a 4 gb limit? IF this goes down to about 175-200 im getting it. Thats a whole lot of room!
by OoZic - 2007-01-08 11:51:35
drop

nice :-) the MS's with less memory will drop in price, and that's what I like. Never buy the newest stuff, couse you'll pay double the price it is worth.
by - 2007-01-08 11:51:58
80gb ipod

Hell Yeah they sure are, they want to download doom onto their ipod a zillion times, any hoo i need a new card i wouldnt get this one for 300 that insane, i may be wrong but rumor mill/may be true that sony is making a bundle pack with 8gb internal card or something (though it would be nice if it wasnt so that it could be used for other things) I think im geting a 2gb or 4gb card
by - 2007-01-08 11:58:31
Awesome but the price...

Great size, now it beats out ipod nanos and other small flash based mp3 players. Too bad it costs $100 more than the PSP itself. Seriously how bad would you feel buying something that small for that much?
by - 2007-01-08 12:07:34
...

good question, I'm wondering that too. but a solution for that would be to just upgrade to 3.0x OE
by - 2007-01-08 12:25:16
.

OK, let's review who the idiot is. It's memory cards not a console retard!!! When 2 GB cards came out, where they cheaper or more expensive on e-bay? When 4 GB cards came out, where they cheaper or more expensive on e-bay? Oh that's right, the answer to both question is that they where cheaper. Sure they where fake, but they where still CHEAPER not more expensive. Know what you're talking about before you go insulting someone you monkey diddler!
by - 2007-01-08 12:27:07
.

No, it's because QJ sucks ass at giving credit where it's due. I no longer submit anything to them for that very reason.
by - 2007-01-08 12:31:59
.

Or you could always swap in the 8gb after you've booted devhook into the higher firmware.
by - 2007-01-08 12:32:27
retard....

Wtf... iPods are 8gb, and people dont use them for warez, in fact most of them use it all for music..... (their real reason is their PS1 emulator)
by - 2007-01-08 12:37:38
About the price

I don't know why people are complaining about the price. It's new technology, and it's going to be expensive until it's massed produced. What do you want them to sell it at a loss? And oh no's it's more than the PSP itself. Well if you wheren't all a bunch of pirates, then your game collection would be worth more than your PSP as well. I won't pay more than 4GB price x2 for one, because that just seems like common sense, but I understand why it's so expensive.

i just want to point out that even if they are fake they are still memory cards and most will work as good as a sony memory card , theyve just been branded by someone else.

. . .

I'll wait for the Sandisk model to come out. I just bought my 4GB two days ago and it's fine for now. I haven't even used all of the space yet, which is great. Anyhow, news is news.

..

how many?
by - 2007-01-08 13:30:19
Re idoit

Other brands like sandisk will make it anyway so theres no purpose for sony to lose out on money because prople would prefer Sont brand MS duos ,besides Ms duos arent for just psps sony has a wide inventory of digital and video camras taht use ms duos , and movies can fill up 8gbs all this homebrew stuff boost sales, thats why i bought a PSP :) But soon people relize they cant use homebrew on the newer psp lol anyways sony is making profit either way and to finalize my point da only idiot here is you
by - 2007-01-08 13:31:43

8gigs?

It's for PORN! :P
by - 2007-01-08 14:04:52
yeah!

Thats the only thing I thought of when I saw 8 gigs. ISOs, You could probably put 20 games on there.
by - 2007-01-08 14:11:32
none

The only real idiots here are the ones calling each other idiots. The only way to save money without fearing being ripped off by shanghi in korea is to buy them from a retailer like newegg. I paid 70 bucks there for a 4gig sandisk duo. Ebay is filled with con artist. Alot of those fake memory cards didn't even work, had no chips in them at all, and there wasn't a damn thing you could do about it. **** Ebay. as to the news of a 8gig, it depends on your interest/needs obviously. Some people will fill that with photos and music (probably the younger psp users who are not experienced in homebrew) and some will use the space for iso/cso files (thats a small percentage compared to the people who dont even know thats possible) Stop argueing about stupid ***** and calling each other names. Your only making yourself look even more retarded. There should be a age restriction on these sites.
by - 2007-01-08 14:17:52

maybe 6. wait a minnut... how much doz 10 games cost? round about $300 if im ryt. (i live in London) JEES U PIRATE
by - 2007-01-08 14:23:32
Hey Dip get your facts straight.

HarleyGs custom fw was a modification of DAXs POC custom fw. HarleyG just added the ability to boot straight to Devhook with the wifi switch up. Dark_Alex was the one who created recovery mode.
by - 2007-01-08 14:29:14
Already avialible

this is already availible from sandisk http://www.flash-memory-store.com/sandisk-8gb-memory-stick-pro-duo.html its a hefty price tag but if your rich why not get 10 of em :)
by - 2007-01-08 14:34:42
hmm..

I don't know what was that store... is in here Puerto Rico.. an original one and it was 85 in COMPUSA... in the sonystore... the 4gb was in 150 dollars.. so... 120? for 2gb?
by - 2007-01-08 14:48:32

I'm just reading this, and wow. I mean seriously. What does it matter? So more people have more space for whatever they want. Woohoo.

Well welcome to the idot club then JimmyD, because you just called us idiots, and by your own logic(and I hate to call it that in reference to you), that makes you an idiot too. Bravo for proving you're idiot. Everyone point and laugh at the guy that's too stupid to insult others without insulting himself at the same time. HAHAHA!

What if you bricked your 3.02/3 OE PSP and it was so messed up you just had to reflash 1.50? The 1.50 FW wouldn't recognize an 8 gig and you would need another memory stick just to reflash OE... and you're 8 gig wouldnt work until you have OE flashed. :/ I'll stick w/ my 4 gig.
by - 2007-01-08 15:23:15
8gb

i got four 4gb of memory card that's 16gb of data that i can use plus two 2gb and one 1gb.if you want to be smart for now i would buy two 4gig and wait for the price of the 8gb to go down and you know it will as soon as the make the 16gb one.so be smart and calling each other stupid the best thing that we can do is to be a smart consumer and dont buy ***** when they just come out wait for prices to go down, and remember if we dont buy it they have no choice but to drop the price down.

NEW PSP OWNER

I have been reading all this in here about ISO.... and more yet i dont know what that is and how it helps with PSP I have a new PSP updated to 3.03 how can i get it to play downloaded games from this site (PSPBLENDER) do i have to wait for the firmware downgrader for 3.03 ?
by - 2007-01-08 15:28:56
you're the idiot

not everyone uses isos. i'd personally like this since i like to keep movies on my memory stick. Currently i only have 2gb
by - 2007-01-08 15:35:58

You sure do. And don't hold your breath, because it may take many months (and there's always the chance that it never comes), in the mean time, if you want to maintain hope, don't upgrade any further, when future official updates become available.

NOU

Too much of a hassle of carrying around memory sticks and whatnot. Also the fact that you've got savedata, homebrew, movies, iso, etc spread across multiple memory sticks is fairly stupid imo...

Qj is not a gateway for never buying another UMD.

This is the Idiot I'm talking about,he barely knows what it is and he coming here because every jack@55 told them about the PSP pirating scene they heard on a board. He didn't even bother to search that psp blender is a scam because he jumped over any interest of obtaining legitimite homebrew games and software.Instead downloading bootleg isos and wrecking the system like people did w\ Dreamcast.

Media sticks...

Gee Dawg, it's for more than just PSPs and Pirate material, MaxT.ak is right. Sinjinn, Sony will release an update that supports 8GB addressing. K3K, This card is Pro Duo it will work with the PSP and if you wait a little while, the price will drop $150 to $99 before you know it. Thats affordable. Besides this is all old news anyway. Sony & SanDisk partners to co-produce the Pro-GH Memory Stick and it's a Pro-Duo stick that will after update address for 32GB.(Sinjinn) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=nn3&q=32gb+memory+stick+Pro-HG&btnG=Search JimmyD, right on brother! Only problem is that this is public and not private servers and the tards will flow to flame. The price to pay for the daily news.

4gb

Man! I just got a 4gb for x-mas! Seems to happen every time, you wait for something to come down in price and then wham! Out comes something bigger and better. I paid 80 bucks for my 4gb. I wonder how much this one will be?
by - 2007-01-08 18:55:15
Too Expensive

Sony Really are extorcianist but the PSP is a dead steal better to buy 2 4gb sticks off ebay and swap'em till the price on this goes down but ya eventually ill have a 8gb stick loaded with ISO's that is provided the Devs ever release a 2.81 or higher FW downgrader (crosses fingers)
by - 2007-01-08 19:07:20

good things come to those who wait!!

All this fretting over stupid memory card!! Best thing to do is FORGET the poxy fake memory cards. They are more hassle than they are worth and you're NOT guarenteed to get the capacity you are paying for! Best option is to sit tight and wait till they come down in price (I picked up a REAL 2gig for 50 pound) had to replace the FAKE one i bought of ebay for 25 pound as it didn't support magicgate!! SO THE LESSON IS don't buy of ebay, and you get what u pay for!!!!
by - 2007-01-08 20:11:10
hi

anyone think that the 4 gig will be 20 bucks in the next two or three months since 8 gig came out?
by - 2007-01-08 20:16:34
.

Not to mention, most people that have a 1,2 or 4GB stick aren't going to just throw it in the garbage just because they got an 8GB stick. Like OoZic says, your argument really isn't an argument at all.
by - 2007-01-08 20:21:45
.

No probably more like $50-60, then after the 8GBs drop a bit, probably down to closer to $40. I doubt they'll hit $20 until 16GB cards come out.

had a sale during chrismas

Fry's had a sale during chrismas for the 4gb pro duo and on top of that had a $20.00 mail in rebate. Which end the price at $59.99 for a 4gb pro duo memory card. It's best to just wait for price drops and sales.
by - 2007-01-08 23:38:02
THIS IS BS!

THE 8GB MODEL IS GONA HOLD LIKE 7.4 GIG LOL! SONY STICKS ARE ALWAYS WAY OFF ON WHAT THEY R CALLED, THIS IS *****ED! 100% SURE NO WEAR NEAR 8 GIG!
by - 2007-01-09 00:12:07
yes!

Cool! 8 gig! But I do agree with the guy that says it wont hold 8 gig of storage. My 2 gig sandisk holds 1.9 gig, my sont 4 gig only holds 3.6 gig. I think the 8 gig ( because its sony) would hold 7.5/7.6 gig. Thats still 400 meg off what it is quoted. F.U.C.K!

"# More than 18 hours of video at 768Kb per seconds in MPEG4 compression" what do you mean? would the product of multiplying the bitrate by 18 hours come out differently depending on if its in MPEG4 compression or DivX or Quicktime or whatever?? haha, does that mean that the color of the PSP matter as well, or how many apples your grandmother had yesterday?

3.03 homebrew

can 3.03 play emulators and homebrew if so how?
by - 2007-01-09 07:24:15
I agree, but your logic is kinda screwed up...

It isn't just a problem with SONY storage media, It's a problem with ALL storage media. Manufacturers don't give the true size 'cuz lets say a 40gig HD sounds alot more appealing than one that actually holds 37.something gigs when formatted, BUT IT'S actually the SAME drive that CLAIMS to hold 40 gigs. The only way around this would be either some sort of invention that let people use unformatted disks, or getting manufacturers to simply OVERSIZE their disks so their sold capacity is actually the REAL formatted capacity. For instance, a 40gig drive playing by my oversize standards would actually be about 43 gigs unformatted. In other words, don't just blame sony itself, BLAME IT'S MARKETING DEPARTMENT AND THE MARKETING DEPARTMENTS OF ALL THE OTHER STORAGE MEDIA MANUFACTURERS!!!

zoop

I personally cant wait. I'll be using this for videos and music, and I cant lie probably some ISOs too. I travel alot and even though I own most of my games, if they run smoothly as an ISO then I'd rather use that as it saves me carrying loads of stuff.

by - 2007-01-09 16:54:06
.

4 gigs are going for about 90-120 dollars now. That means that you can get 2 or 3 4 gig cards for the same price as the 8 gig one!
by - 2007-01-09 16:56:24

Firmware 2.82 fixed that. 3.03 OE (or devhook) supports the new cards

ok..

I'm like a total retard when it comes to computers and stuff. However, I sort of know what an ISO is. An image of a game from a CD stored in a file on your computer right? Well, what are you all talking about with puttiing ISOs on PSPs? I didn't know you could do that... BTW, if Ipod makes 80GBs and up for $300 the only reason I see people buying this 8GB for the same price is for the widespread abilties that the PSP have over the Ipod... you can easily put 1000 songs on your PSP and 5 good quality movies (pictures don't count)...Also, the homebrew games, and now these ISOs... Right now, I don't think it's worth $300. When I got my PSP the first day it came out, I brought a 256MB for maybe $70 or $80, today, it's probably $30, or less. Just wait a couple of months and this 8GB will probably be $200 with a steadily decrease. (That's why I didn't get the PS3 yet, makes no sense especially when there are not that many games I will play...waiting for MGS4...) On top of that, why buy memory for half the price of a PS3 which stores 60GBs? I don't get it... I see no reason to be spending that type of money on memory cards, simply because of microtechnology and its portablity...Go get an Ipod

2 4GB cards is enough

I can't find reliable information on the compatibility with recent firmwares and the 8GB cards so I just have 2 4GB cards. They can hold pretty much all my game backups, homebrew, videos, music, ect... It is more economical too.
by - 2007-01-17 14:58:47
horse sheeeeite

dont think for a second that this will allow you to have tons of .iso on 1 stick, as i have a 4gb one at the mo and it is crap for .iso, something to do with the memory, it cant keep up with the game so it has to lag to load up, it is constantly trying to pay catch up, for anyone thinking of buying one of these for games, you would be better off buying 4 2gb sticks, word! lol. not that i condone that kind of behaviour all my iso's are backups of my originals, to yo moms!
