DIY Motion sensor for the PSP? |
Ó
It could be a homemade motion adaptor for the PSP, or, most likely an early development version of the motion sensor accessory that was being developed for Mercury before it's release. What a great attachment this would make for the PS3 - Who needs Dual shock 3 when you've got a PSP to use?

remember that "halo for PSP" it could be the same thing but then again it does look really real
WTF!!!! This is awesome!!! DIY sensors rules!!! PSP RULES!!!
u know who u are.!!
How did they get controling commands through the usb?
I tought that wasn't posible with the psp usb port,
Looks fake to me.
The cable is running into the analog stick hole
wow that looks amazing that would be so cool to have
nocomment
who needs a ps3 controller when you have a psp that is less comfortable, has less buttons, much more expensive. i wonder who...
If Sony made an official one of these, then maybe we could have decent FPS's on the PSP (motion sensor to look, analog to move)
It's impossible unless it's from a developer.
i give it a REAL'ness thumbs up; physically, technically it looks feasible; #4 like #6 said the wires are running through the analogue stick hole then on the switches im just *guessing* here but he's definitely made them electronic instead of mechanical ;)
what they are doing is the motion sensor has nothing to do with the usb port... it is just powered by it... all it does is moves the analog stick... the motion sesor just reads which direction the psp in pointing, and then moves the analog stick in that direction... no point really, he probably just got bored and wanted to prove something...
Looks real but it could just be a video and some parts from radio shack.
How is it impossible? he's created an external circuit then connected the up down left right connections to be electronically connected... makes perfect sense to me...
@13; he didnt, he did it ELECTRONICALLY I THINK YOU'LL FIND
Defininately homemade, and definately not fake. From the looks of things it is not actually using the usb, its just a nice solid place to attach the device. It is instead interfaced through the contacts for the analogue stick, which should be fairly easy to do. Hell if i had the parts i could do something similar myself.
and also there are definitely more than 4 wires used to go into the psp in that hole; if there were 8 - and there certainly looks like there could then it would mean the circuit @ his pcb end would be connecting the 2 wires to join the one connection on the psp analogue stick connection - 8 wires 2 for each up down left right
im with cogboy...
FAKE
This looks really cool, I'd like to see more of it, really.
@people saying its fake:
Wow, you guys really have nothing to do. I see "its fake" "definitly fake" "omgzorz its fake" ok, now, are you guys skilled with electronics ? Oh wait, it comes from people who thought it was into the USB port, right ? Ok, I'll believe it's fake whenever you guys can bring me prooves... not just "but look at the video" no no... I want to see facts like "It cannot be real because..." and then give me actual words, reasons why logically it cannot be done (like why on the actual circuit board it wouldnt work), and such reasons. Until then you will only speaking bull***** and only and simply prooving that you have no life because you think "wow, saying fake is cool".
Anyhow, this motion sensor is definitly something I would get, there is many possibilities for homebrew that it might bring as well as actual games if Sony would develop one, but it'd be even more interesting to see one cool homemade device like this.
That looks awesome, nice job.
Nothing special if you've played Kirby Tilt n Tumble for GameBoy.
Lawl this is SOOOOOOOOOOOO FREAKING OLD!!
Look @ gamespot, Mecury suppost to release with motion sensor, but the cancel it.
It would be rather annoying on the bus or something, where I use my psp the most.. as itd tottally through you out ofplace
Awesome too bad he aint gonna release it
Well if you think back, youll remember the PSP keyboard that Logitech was working on that they couldnt release because sony refused to give them the USB control code.
Also, Mercury was a launch title, and when we look at the firmware dumps, the USB function files werent in the firmware till 2.7
SO THATS IT! NEXT!
Ok, after having a closer look, this is probably real, I see where the wireing goes to the analog, so the sensor just moves the nub, pretty cool idea, but it looks a bit slow.
sry for that other comment, I guess I reacted too soon, =P
i dont think this is using the usb port i think its just atached it looks like the just hooked it up to the antilog stick
it's amazing.
All they did was put a bunch of crap on their psp and played a video on it
@Raider X
It's not connected through the USB port, retard! Did you notice the cables going through the analog stick hole???
This is rather boring news considering they launched kirby tilt and tumble a nearly a decade ago. I would expect to see an official one in time as well as a GBA cartridge that plugged into the bottom of the DS for tilt functionality.
as much as i loved Kirby's tilt and tumble on gameboy color and Wario ware Twisted...this "new" concept you created should work just as well...
i remember when nintendo was going to use the tilt'n'tumble game concept with the gamecube...
in a kirby game, and nintendo scrapped it.
so i'm sure sony will make it work.
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME?? the video wont work for me and i need to know how to fix it! All i see is a quicktime logo with a question mark on it! can someone tell me how to fix this please? any help is appreciated, tha nks!
"help me PLEASE Unregistered), at May 23, 2006 at 04:15PM" play it on ur psp. or in firefox.
I think this could be for REAL!!! Also, a fact I've been wondering about, is the analogue sticks interface with the rest of the PSP's circuit boards? Any of you that have bravely removed their faceplates would have clearly seen it. How do you wire to that? If you did follow the leads, I think you should really put a how-to out there for other aspiring HBrewers/tinkerers.
Cheers if it's totally real, 'cause I think it just might be. How about some PRON of the PSP, with the faceplate removed?
There's no rumble in the PS3 controller any more, so it's not called DualShock any more. Remember that little lawsuit thing, that Sony lost? Yea, so now it's called DualShake. Shake.
I would love to play mercury with tilt control instead of the nub control.
This would make mercury several times better.
WHOEVER MADE THIS IS THE COOLEST PERSON IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!!!!
AND I TOTALLY WANT TO OWN THAT THING
MAYBE I WILL TELL SONY TO MAKE MOTION SENSING DILDOS FOR MY PSP!!!
THAT SHOULD BE FUN
this is beutiful i would buy this if sony made this or that guy sold it!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!
It would perfectly fit with Loco Roco
You would physically alter you psp for the sake of one game?
niiiiice
PREVIOUS ARTICLES HAVE PROVEN THAT WE KNOW HOW TO REPLICATE PARTS OF THE CONTROLLER AND REMOTE THROUGH THE SERIAL PORT. THE GUY CUD HAV USED A SIMPLE MOTION SENSIN THINGY. IT IS POSSIBLE. BUT IT IS PROBABLY FAKE ANYWAY BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT THE SERIAL PORT. BUT IF THIS IS FAKE, THE GUY HAS DONE HIS RESEARCH. (cuz he showed it plugged into the serial port)
wait never mind it doesnt use the serial port, it goes into the hole for the analog stick. the guy must have done some major modding if this isnt fake
@ qwerty
CANT U READ?? I commented on my mistake and stated that dumbass! ur just an idiot noob who has nothing better to do but flame people
have a weight on an analog stick to move it in the direction that it is tilted.... ez.
connect the wires from that analog stick to the pins of ur psp's analog stick so it uses the new analog stick...ez
its real without a doubt because any idiot that can connect a few wires (not saying the guy is an idiot) can do this...
I think this is pretty possible, if you think about it all you would need is the ground wire to make contact with the direction you want, and it would respond. The usb looks to be used as just a holding position (maybe because of the 2 holes on the side) and the wires run into the anolog/nub spot, which could mean it is connected to the analog/nub, or could be connected to the d-pad which I think would be much easier. If this video it self is fake, I dont see why it can't be done.
If he can make it more sensitive and faster, I'd get one for the Ace Combat PSP game, and Mecury Meltdown.... long live kirby tilt and tumble!
If he can make it more sensitive and faster, I'd get one for the Ace Combat PSP game, and Mecury Meltdown.... long live kirby tilt and tumble!
I belive that this is real, because I always thought that it was posible to make a Homebrew app for the PSP to use somthing that would need the USB port.
And this is probably not done by Sony, because if Sony made somthing like this they would tell us about it, and it would be much smaller.
Then again that is what I think!?
Well I'm not certain if this the exact same thing but I read an interview with Archer Maclean about Mercury a few months before it came out in Edge and they had created a tilt sensor to play the game as demonstrated in the video. They wanted to sell the game with a tilt sensor but I don't think it was commercially viable.
It'd be great if they did finally do such an attachment, I know LocoRoco is screaming out for it :)
There's a difference between the ps3 tilt and psp tilt. That is, display.
There's a moment when you're tilting it where you wont be able to see the screen because of the reflection or you moved it too much. You're actually moving the display and thats tends to be awkward.
Maybe thats why Mercury didnt shipped with that funcionality.
i think its a fake but then i thimk its real
i dunno?
wiring a motion sensor to the analog pad has nothing to do with homebrew or anything just plain simple elctronics. Anyone with the sufficient knowledge can do that, and that is alot of people.
Look, all it is, is probably a usb connection soldered to a board, with some components on, and some lame guy has probably memorised the movement of the ball... and made it look 'realistic' if thats what you want to call it.... Point Proven
The developers did have a functioning tilt sensor for mercury and were planning on shipping it with the game but it must have been too expensive to implement.
i need to know how this is done.
can whoever did this post the method on i-hacked.com, or psp-hacks.com or sommat like that
While looking around the SOCOM ISO in the prx folder one of the prx's is called USBPSPCM.PRX. Could this not be a usb command program, if so then the required prx's are on 2.0 and as 2.0 was included with every UK psp and Mercury was available at launch so if this is the thing that is needed then it was probably cost that stopped then as others have said and not the lack of software
awesome hopefully its real

Even if this is fake which it is not in my opineon.
I would use the parts from GBA game Yoshi Topsy-Turvy that has that tilt hardware.
If I can get it for cheap I will try it. :)
all it is a sensor on a board mounted to the top using the bolts on the top, then transmit the data to the nub so the psp just thinks its somone pushing the nub that way. it has nothing to do with usb
Just tape something really small and heavy to your Analog Stick. It would work the same way.
62: Yoshi topsy-turvy uses rotational sensing, as in, turning the system like a steering wheel. Better to use Kirby's Tilt and Tumble if anything. besides, I heard that Yoshi had cruddy sensing at best anyway.
Anyway, as convincing as it looks, it has to be a video being played with a bunch of crap stuck onto the top. Why? Look how unresponsive it is to a couple of his motions in the 2nd half.
