UPDATE 1: Having analysed the image in Photoshop since reading the comments below, I still think the inscription reads 1.3MP. As far as pricing goes, my statements on the $50 price point were merely conjecture (as should be apparent in the article). We'll be contacting Sony for clarification on both issues shortly. Thanks for being vigilant guys!

I've also since been informed by people in the know that a 1.3MP camera could in fact be capable of simple facial recognition.

The PSP camera is one elusive little gal, she's often hidden in shadows and known to move so fast it's almost impossible to get a clear shot of her, but we've managed to track one down. As you can see from the inscription on the device it's likely it'll be a 1.3 mega pixel camera, and it's pretty teeny too. The camera resolution suggests that you won't be taking snapshots and printing them out at huge sizes for friends and family, but it should work well enough with the PSP's relatively low screen resolution. Now that we've actually got a good look at the device we've got to wonder just what sort of gameplay functionality, if any the device will have. Unlike the PS2 Eye Toy we won't be able to move about in front of this camera, and since our fingers will be busy pushing buttons that leaves only our faces, and it's unlikely that a 1.3 mega pixel camera has the sensitivity to pick up subtle facial expressions. Whether or not this confines the camera to video conferencing and multimedia applications is anyones guess, as is the price on this baby, but it's unlikely to cost more than $50, especially when you consider the Eye Toy + 1 game bundle costs about that much.

So what do you guys think, will gamers snap it up, or leave this peripheral in the dust?

I agree that it may not have much to offer as far as gameplay input. However, the ability to take Web-friendly photos and short video clips makes it a nifty item. Especially if it is capable of videoconferenci ng. Sadly, most of this functionality is going to require a newer firmware, so my 1.5 and I will patiently wait for a motivated homebrew coder who wants to port Skype to the PSP!

I don't care about video conferencing...unless that one company does hook us up with psp phone..that might be cool.

But anyway, Im way more interested in what they can do with games. I'm kind of confounded as to how the psp will use this in games. The original eyetoy was pretty cool with games. And it seems like they could do all sorts of things in the next gen if sony would put a few more resources into it. But I don't get what you can do if it's all about facial expression and probably swaying your neck around. They didn't really offer up much in their interview with ign. There was that one pic of the girl using her head to help bridge the way for some lemmings, but that's not too exciting.

1280x1024 resolution is what 1.3MP translates to. Strictly looking at the resolution, that's good enough for a desktop wallpaper on most people's computer screens. The quality of that 1280x1024 image is another story altogether. What do you expect for $50? You're not going to be a professional photographer with such a piece of equipment. And, no, there is no phone on the market in the US that beats that kind of resolution for $50. It's only $50 because you have to sign a minimum one year phone plan unless you're on a pay-as-you-go plan, but then you don't get the big discount on the phone. Either way, you're paying a lot more for that phone than $50. Cell phone companies often lose money on the phone itself and make it up in airtime, accessory, and other add-on sales. It works just like the video game console biz.

1.3 MP good? Hell I had a 1.3 MP Cam in a Siemens Phone. That was sh'tty. I mean really sh'tty. I don't think it makes great pictures to use as wallpapers. Btw you would have to resize them (zoom in means a loss of quality) because I don't think they make this cam a 16:9 cam. That would be really ridiculous.

I got a Sony K750i it has a 2.0 MP cam with auto-focus. This is acceptable quality for a cell phone. But hey, the PSP is 20 times bigger with much more possibilities and a better chipset. So 3-5 MP shouldn't really be the problem.

Just think about how many people would buy a PSP to have a digital camera AND a gaming-device. So what the hell do those people at Sony think they do? They lose a giant market. No new PSP customers because of this.

I saw an IGN article a while back where they play with some demos with the psp eyetoy at E3. They thought it wasn't very sensitive but later claimed it was because of the low right at E3.

This will definitely be used for gaming. I wouldn't be surprise if it also came bundled with a mini game compilation.

Is about when the technology is ready. Think online gaming. When the dreamcast and the PS2 tried it, it just wasn't time for it. Console gamers weren't connected and lag was terrible with 56k connections.

Live came in at the right time. The tech was ready just like the tech for motion sensing is now ready for mainstream. Remember is usually not the invertors or first comers that profit, it's the ones with the right product at the right time (IPOD, Playstation, Google, XBL, Windows).

And just to let you know, the Eyetoy with the PS2 game Kinetic is available for 29.99 at BestBuy. You might also note that the hardware is completely different though. The material and manufacturing cost couldn't possibly be the same, while the the demand of the product would definitely affect the cost as well. Stick to facts instead of speculation next time.

i'd not buy PSP EyeToy unless it came with a demo disc with demo games on it like ps2 eyetoy, and it needs more use, not just gaming.

I'd like to inform the ninty fans that the GB camera was a static camera that was never really used with gaming as much as a program built into it to manipulate pictures. Sony's eye toy on the other hand has been used for gaming since day one on the ps2 and will continue to be used for gaming on psp and ps3. The eye toy is a gaming peripheral first and foremost. It's been that way on the ps2 for years now, and it'll be that way on the psp. The point is not to have a cool digital video camera, it's to use it with games. That's the focus of the technology. Sure sony could have made a full on video camera for the psp, but they wanted a camera with the fuctionality of the eye toy that's affordable enough to package with games.

1.3 megapixels will take pictures at a resolution of 1280X960, guess what, that's a higher resolution than the HD that everyone goes on about(720p, 1080i/p is 1920x1080) ....that's also prolly a higher res then your monitor is set at right now....

This is more then enough for a portable device and will take pictures just fine, you only need super high megapixels for printing out posters n sh*t, f*cking idiot noob consumers....you guys get hung up on flashy terms so easly, but never truly understand what it's used for....

I know this because the .prx files for 2.70 include ones for the gps and digital camera. And it is a nice addition. A firmware upgrade would be bad, but honestly, by then we will have full access to other firmwares most likely.

I agree with shatterdome, you people need to pay attention to what you will actually use it for. Yes, it is not the very best in the world but why the hell would you need that, or even expect to get that for 50-100$????

I love the idea of the camera, i like how small it is, looks durable, but I may wait for a second one to be made like it. Video would be nice i suppose.

if i was to guess, i would say sony has already made a 8 megapixel camera for the psp. they will get every1 hyped up about the 1.3, then a few months later release 2, then a few months later, 3, ect. they would make more money doing that. people would end up with 8 cameras for the psp, as they get better and better, the people need to upgrade their psp cameras cuz you cant be seen around with one of those old peices of garbage. i think gps would be ALOT more useful then a camera though. the only thing is, with a psp gps, wouldnt you feel a bit violated? people can track you. a gps satalite is a computer and can be hacked.....

I surely think this is fake now. First of all, the letters on it. Zoom into them, and they look like they were scratched into the paint. Horribly as well. Second, What the Hell is that big, white plate under it??? Third, look near the eye of the camera, to the right, the paint looks crumbled up a little bit and is falling off. It's either this thing is fake, or Sony's making the worst piece of ***** camera ever.

By the way, it's 1.3 Megapixels. To the people who think it's 3, you're wrong, because even when you zoom into it, you can still see "1.3." Also, you may believe the 1 and the period aren't supposed to be there, but as I said, I think these numbers and letters are all scratched in there. I mean, just look at them when you zoom into them.

I don't even hope this is real. I surely hope that this is fake and that Sony is actually making something better. This camera is horrible.

1.3 isn't great outside of the PSP, but you've got to remember the PSP is a 0.13-megapixel device...so at the very least the pictures would look pretty much as superb as they possible could on the PSP's screen...now on the computer would be another story but still, I wouldn't dismiss this as a complete waste.

after reading the other posts, it really does look like it says 3 MP.

if you look at the engraving, the supposed 1 is smaller than than the other letters, and is not engraved as deep as the others. It looks more like a scratch than a 1.

Yah, could be like the PS3 was when it was first coming out. Remember how man y concept designs THAT bad boy had???...LOL...As for the popularity of it, it might make the PSP more appealing for a short while. Since it plugs into the USB slot, it might even be able to be used as webcam, who knows. If so it would have that dual purpose effect that I for one look for in all electronics. What I think, and only a thought, is if it doesn't sell well as a PSP peripheral, then it will still have that appeal as a potential web cam device(video chat, conferencing, etc.). I mean Sony's not dumb, they will always an ace up their sleeve. If it's affordable enough, then I'll probably go out and buy it. I'd have to say it will be around 30-45 US dollars.

i will buy this cam for my PSP just for fun. my POS webcam is even worst.

it is nice to have, and not necessary I have to buy it for my PSP. my camera phone is a 2MP camera. it is alright. i just can't wait to get a k800i from SE.

Come on, who want's to take photos with a toy like PSP? This camera will be used to have fun with, not taking profesional photos with it...

It will probably be used for video calling, online gaming (players could see each other's expressions) ... and probably for some PSP community (forums, pspmails, pspblogs ...), where you could communicate with other PSP owners around the world.

What people seem to generally fail to realize is this is not guaranteed to be what Sony eventually releases in the end, nor is it likely to be your only option. Sony, despite what people may think, isn't stupid. After all, you wouldn't be here unless you are interested in the PSP in the first place, right? They have to balance the abilities of the camera with those of the PSP, and making it take pictures far better than the PSP can easily display doesn't make much sense. If you want a good camera, why would you buy an attachment like this? The have to keep costs down, power consumption down, and size down to fit in with the PSP.

Even if Sony does manage to screw up something big time, when has that ever stopped third-party companies from coming out with an equal-but-cheaper or even SUPERIOR product? Just look at some of the early batteries that came out, things like that weren't initially from Sony.

So, instead of flaming or making insults (omg sony ur gay my fone is beter), perhaps you should give suggestions on how things can be made better, or give insightful reasons (with supporting evidence) on how a company, which is asexual by nature, is gay.

ok, to you ppl tryin to compare this to a camera phone's size and the MP camer to the psp size and MP camera, the psp didnt originally START with the chip set into the psp. the entire camera is set INTO that little silver thing. while with a phone, more than half the space is devoted to the camera itself, like the W810. STOP comparing this, STOP dissing sony and STOP *****ing about it. If you hate sony so much, WHY THE ***** DID YOU BUY THE PSP?!?! the camera is an OPTIONAL peripheral, so its not like you NEED to get it to play all the new games. if you dont want it, then dont even read the article. and with all you 1.5'ers out there, stop living in the past and get past the illegality of dl's ISO's to play. like hell they are just 'back-ups'.
