Adapter from Photofast supports 8 GB microSD cards - Image 1There are a lot of memory stick formats out there. So much that it can be daunting to have a variety of devices that only support a certain kind of card. Fortunately, adapters were made to make our lives simpler.

If you're the type of person who sticks to microSD cards (most likely because majority of your gadgets demand it), this little doohickey might pique your interest: the PhotoFast CR-5300.

What's different about this adapter is that it can support microSDHC cards of up to 8 GB large. Great for your PSP and mobile phone if you need the extra space. The press release also says it's compatible with any Sony product.

We'll probably see more and more of these kinds of adapters in the future as the 8 GB microSD becomes more popular. No pricing for this model yet so it might be a while before we see it become available, but it's worth keeping an eye out for.

# microsd is your friendsilwon 2008-04-11 02:14
since microsd is so small and there is so much space in the umd drive, does anyone think its possible to create a switching program or raid driver to access multiple cards individually or in the raid configuration? if you could fit two or four - 8 gig microsd's in a single pro duo adapter or perhaps fit 4 or more in the umd drive and selectively switch between them on the fly in the XMB that would be awesome! It's just a thought, the idea of 16-32 gig sounds pretty sweet to me, movies, music and games o my!

Nearly 16 euros for this, what makes this different from my el cheapo adaptor that i got from ebay, for about quid, mine works fine with my 8gb sdhc card in my psp, built in ms pro reader on my vaio and my external card reader.

i was thinking more along the lines of a electronic switch built into the card, you can change between your memory stick/flash and usb in the xmb already, why is this so far fetched? positive replies are always more helpful than some typical arrogant sluff...wanka;) I'm no coder or engineer so i'm obviously asking a question for answers and to maybe get someone thinking about that answer..it'd be cool is all.

they already sell these type of adapters on ebay for like 3dollars lol.

16GB pro duos are now at circuit city and are popping up on ebay now. for a hefty $240 plus shipping =o

also..

And 8gb prices are dropping! =]

they were selling near $80 2-4weeks ago and now there down 10$. =]

3 more months when ebays flooded with 16GB pro duos, 8GB will be around 40$ most likely. great news.

I just picked up one of these adapters and a sandisk 4GB microSD card.

Here's what I've learned:

The cheap ones are simple electrical adapters for *USB MEMORY CARD READERS* that natively support "SD 1.0" and memory stick in the same slot. It's literally no different than the Pro Duo to Pro adapter that a sandisk Pro Duo comes with -- pin to pin connections.

The unit in *THIS* article seems to have a SDHC translator ASIC built into the housing (hence it's much more expensive price, I got my crappy one for $3 including shipping from pricegrabber).

Trying to use my adapter with a Sandisk 4GB microSDHC inserted, the memory stick light just flashes forever and the PSP freezes until the adapter is removed.

I don't have a non-HC microsd card to test it with.

This is also corroborated by this link:

http://www.pspfanboy.com/2007/10/10/microsd-to-memory-stick-adapter-for-the-giga-thrifty/

So far, the PhotoFast CR-5300 seems to be the only SDHC compatible adapter I can find. Anyone in the land of the rising sun care to send me a GMAIL and give me a hand purchasing one and shipping it off to me in california for empirical testing?
