A Location Free Video Guide: How To Stream Video To Your PSP

Location Free support for the PSP has been around since firmware 2.50, but the high price of the Location Free devices has always been an issue. A lot of people haven't been able to try it out and see for themselves how the whole thing works on their PSPs.

That's all about to change though, because thanks to YouTube, there is now a video that shows the Location Free - PSP interface as well as explain a few things about the interface. Kevin Lim, the guy who made the video, gives a meticulously detailed guide on setting up Sony's Location Free player, shedding some much-needed light on timeshifting and placeshifting in the process.

For a taste of Location Free in action, check out the video below. Oh, and the video's author offers this errata on his vid's YouTube page: "Towards the end of the video, I meant to say 16:9 screen aspect, not 14:9."

Enjoy, guys.

To be fair, it DOES look like quite a cool device, but the price tag makes it troublesome. In my opinion there is no point in this; I already have a televison, so this adds nothing new. If it could send TV shows over the internet (to watch in wi-fi places) then I might consider it, but by the looks of it such a thing won't happen.

# Isn't the PS3 going to function as a Location Free Player?Guest 2006-09-10 07:38
I thought the PS3 was going to have this feature as well. It would be awesome to be able to watch whatever is on at my house while I'm in Mexico.

@ 10

If you mean just streaming videos from the ps3 harddrive, why not just use the pimp streamer to stream videos? Anyways, the location free player is sweet, you can stream live T.V. from any wi-fi hotspot with your psp ^_^.

#11, I dont think its aimed at people watching tv in their front room. Its for people to watch tv in their garden, their lunchbreak while they're at work, or in the pub/cafe/beach if theres a wireless point.

Dunno how British TV license works with this though - I'm assuming your home TV license covers you - but knowing the money grabbing BBC, i doubt it.

BBC sucks.

That is what the system is made to do. To send live video/audio to any WiFi hotspot. It also has 2 A/V ports to plug in a DVR or some other video device. There is a IR Blaster so you can control the devices when you are at a WiFi hotspot.

# Check out PimpStreamerGuest 2006-09-10 09:19
Now that the 2.7 -> 1.5 tiff downgrader is available, a better route would be to downgrade to 1.5, and setup pimpstreamer and give it a try, as its free, and you don't need a hardware box -> the computer does the work. And with 1.5 you can install all your emulators and ROMS, and use DevHook to run all the other firmwares when you need them (like 2.7) for UMDs or to surf the web or RSS. You really want to have your PSP at 1.5 and keep it there, because from there you can do ANYTHING at this point in time, and so much more than the with the other firmwares. You can always use Devhook to run 2.7 off your duostick. So by downgrading you lose nothing and gain everything.

Two questions:

Are there any updates on Andy Fungs TVSP or eTV. They are much cheaper ways to send a cable feed to your psp.

Are there any PSP hombebrews that can send a video of what is on your computer screen to your PSP so that you can have a streaming video running on your computer and send it to your psp? and I dont mean Pimp Streamer.

# how much???Guest 2006-09-10 10:36
Well, how much exactly would the cheapest LocationFree player cost? and it doesn't have to ba an actual $ONY 1 either. 1 more Question. there is some other device in that video... it is silver, and it sounded to me like it was a location free player, but it didn't say anything on it, it was rectangular and boxy, with A to Z on top.

Yeah your right. I remember Sony mentioned that awhile back. I don't see why they couldn't with an internet connection and wifi to the PSP. People complain about the PS3 being $600. If you get this also with the PS3 that will be a plus. It may not be available right away but I see nothing that would get in the way of making the PS3 into a location free player.

I thought this was going to show how to get around NOT using the pricy location free player:P...lol ( Pricy for ME anyway). But hey I'm not knockin it though, looks like a pretty awesome feature. I'd probably get more out of the camera and the GPS unit though, since I don't watch TV much :P. That and I don't really want to update unless I absolutely have to ( more than likely when I buy my next game :-| ).

Don't post ignorant comments like this.. this is exactly what the locationfree does.. i use the locationfree on my psp more than any homebrew i have.. the nice thing is how great the remote control feature works.. u can turn on and off your cable box, flip through channels view infos of channel etc.. remotely... i have my pc/dvdplayer/cable all connected to the base station and stream all my favorite animes from anywhere... a cool thing is using it with the vnc homebrew app out there.. u can control your pc from another contry and just start and watch your movies via the locationfree.. anyway.. the only downside is the steep price.. but still this thing was like $350 i remember like some years ago.. but now its around the $150-$200 range... anyway... thats my 2 cents... by the way.. this whole thread was totally useless i think because the setup is a peace of cake...

You can get a sling box for half the price, and if you have a MDA or smartphone you can do the same thing. While I'm in the UK, I still get to pause record rewind my tivo from my phone or laptop.

Sony slips again

# PimpStreamer is ok but...Guest 2006-10-04 23:33
You guys need to stop saying PimpStreamer is better than LocationFree. It's not even close to being true.

LocationFree is built into the PSP and works really well and most importantly allows you to stream LIVE video and control your cable box. PimpStreamer does not stream live video without some extra configuration, a lot of work, and some piece of hardware to input the signal. In addition it can't control your cable box since it has no hardware, it's software only.

No knock against PimpStreamer, it's great for free software and I use it myself, just stop saying it's better than LocationFree; it's not even close.
