A li'l reminder on 3rd party PS3 accessories

Void! - Image 1More than anything else, this one is just a reminder. Sony Corporation has always maintained the policy of voiding warranty whenever a user results to unlicensed third party accessories. We're not sure if this applies to all their other products like TV sets and stuff but needless to say, this applies to the PlayStation 3. After all, this has always been the case ever since they released the original PlayStation.

We thought it would be necessary to talk about this one because apparently, some users are already having problems with these unlicensed products. Like one poster from online forum AVSForum for starters. This guy is crying foul because according to him, the generic brand of component cables he has been using caused his PS3 to malfunction.

He went on and shared that he called Sony's customer support division. As expected, Sony told this guy that the warranty of his PS3 is voided and they will fix it upon payment of US$ 150. Good thing for him though, retail store Target replaced his system as they allow product exchanges for 90 days or full refund.

We're not against third party products or anything. It's just that they are exactly that - accessories not under Sony's jurisdiction. Whenever you decide to use these, take note that you are running the risk of having problems such as these. We guess Sony, or any company for that matter, has the right to employ strategies like these to protect their business.

» WHO CARES!!!

Stick this stuff in the PS3 section. I come to to PSP Updates to read articals on PS3.

If that's what I wanted I would go to the PS3 section!!!

Dont you people pay attention to your readers???

You had 4 or 5 people tell you that yesterday as well!

by Nos - 2007-01-18 03:22
» What a bummer, target ftw

thats some mad b.s. there should be some type of communications between sony and third party hardware developers that guarantees these things wont happen.

by Vietone - 2007-01-18 03:24
» This applies to both

If you use, for example, a fake memory stick in the PSP and the PSP starts having problems. Sony can blame it on the fake memory stick and void the warrenty. But who would be stupid enough to say they are using a fake memory stick.

If you use a third party remote or accessory. For example, those docking stations with speakers and control buttons, they can void the warrenty.

Sony has been doing this for years and its perfectly fine. Microsoft does the same thing to. If you told them your having video problems with a mad catz universal component cable, both companies would void your warranty.

» You make a good point...

no one comes to psp updates to read topics on the PS3, but the people at q j dont care about there readers. if 4 or 5 people were getting on them yesterday and there still doing it, then i doubt they'll stop posting crap in the wrong section.

(BUT I BET IF SOMEONE POSTED SOMETHING IN THE WRENG SECTION OF THERE FOURMS, THEY WOULD THROUGH A HISSY HIT)

by Vietone - 2007-01-18 03:28
» Wont happen

Third Party accessories are designed to be as cheap as possible. They will sacrifice anything in order to save money.

Because they know that people are willing to buy their product over sonys for less money. The only company so far to have licensed products was Nyko for the memory cards. They were real good too but I always preferred the Sony Blue and Red memory cards so i never bought the yellow nyko ones.

Monster is the only third party company who has higher priced accessories then Sony and they never have problems. You get what you paid for.

» secret spy cameras?..

And how, may I ask, is Sony going to find out what brand of cable you've used to connect your PS3? That's completely moronic.

by PTSnake - 2007-01-18 03:51
» right...

if Sony voided my warranty for using a fake memory stick, i'd just put them on court. I mean, if its fake, it's their problem. They should do something about that.

by NachoF - 2007-01-18 04:10
» unbelievable

I am very surprised that this got posted here, such a respectable site..... if the Ps3 broke it was NOT because of the component cables, it was because it came with flaws, unfortunately for him.... Sony just found that excuse.... they started asking him for everything he had to see if there was at least something that wasnt Sony and then blame it on that... come on pspupdates, read what you post

by some random guy - 2007-01-18 04:18
» re

this isn't about the ps3. it's about all sony products; including the psp. the point of the article is to point out that if u use non-sony accessories on a psp or ps3, your warranty is void...

by NachoF - 2007-01-18 04:19
» In fact

In fact, if you read the forum the guy NEVER blames the cables for breaking his ps3 so the claim that "This guy is crying foul because according to him, the generic brand of component cables he has been using caused his PS3 to malfunction." is completely not true... he never blamed the component cables, he just said that Sony did, even though they havent looked at the system....

by Where have you been? - 2007-01-18 04:21
» This, a respectable site?

You must not have seen what they did with that Zelda HB video. Respectable my arse

by some random guy - 2007-01-18 04:28
» re

what did they do with the zelda hb video?

by wha... - 2007-01-18 04:44
» PTSnake....

How are they going to stop crappy Chinese underground developers from illegally making memory sticks that are fake? You can't sue Sony for some stupid chinese people who like to make some money at your expense, and who lie to you in every way. If a fake memory stick breaks your PSP, have fun contacting the brutes who created that stick, as they would be responsible...yet...they are no where to be found...hiding in some underground lair of some sort...

» im on 3.03 OE B

... and my psp is now older than 1 year, so i dont have any warranty anyways

im gonna change the faceplate which would also end my warranty and im always using third party usb cables, since the sony one is too short and i have many left from my mp3player and stuff ...

by CSFFlame - 2007-01-18 04:57
» move plz

to PS3 section

by CSFFlame - 2007-01-18 05:16
» I should probably point out now:

That a component cable/Composite/SVideo can't hurt the PS3 (other than pysical damage if you force a bad connector or something.

You could short all the contacts and it wouldn't damage it really.

by The Frenchman - 2007-01-18 05:57
» LMAO why do you guys tell them why it stopped working?

I mean, you call sony and you say, I plugged my console and now it refuses to work, then they say ok we'll fix it and you send it over.

no need to go;"I bought Mad catz cables and now my Ps3 is running strange."

When I got my faulty SCPH 30001 PS2 fixed by SONY for DRE's they asked me if I ever used cheat code devices like GS or AR and I sure had but I said no because they would have charged me for the repair, and you can be sure GS had nothing to do with the malfunction. I even had opened my PS2 many times and they didn't charge me a penny for voiding the sticker... It may have changed for the sticker but the less they know about your problem the best you will be. They have no need to know what you used with your PS3. 3rd party or not these accessories are none of their business.

Companies will steal your money if you open your wallet to them.

by Dave - 2007-01-18 06:00
» Why not just....

Lie. Never tell Sony you used 3rd party products. They can't prove anything. If they don't have bullet-proof evidence that the malfunction is due to something other than a badly made PS3, they should replace it. Plain & Simple.

by highps3 - 2007-01-18 09:04
» ...

This is complete BS. Use whatever cable you want. And when you call Sony how about you just dont tell them!

by Matt - 2007-01-19 06:27
» Monster..

the monster corperation who makes so much money off of cable sales its not even funny! just buy something from ramcables.com or FS in house rocketfish brand, or Acoustic research. The acual improvment to cost ratio is a steep one. But even the Sony cables are low quality which is something which is sad.
