8 GB Memory Stick PRO Duo coming soon |

Sony will be releasing its new power-packed Memory Stick PRO Duo. This one's the MSX-M8GS 8GB card, which allows you to transfer data and expand your gadget's capacity. Apart from the 8GB storage capacity, it also has 7.35 GB available. Its write speed is at a minimum of 15Mbps2 so you can bet that's real fast. It's digital storage is also said to be reliable. How reliable? Well, you'd have to find out for yourself. Anyhow, this stick is expected to ship on or before February 19, 2007. So you might as well start placing your pre-orders now. Oh, and it's tagged at US$ 299.99.

yes it is, sony stated in the press release it will work with the current pro duo devices, just not at the full 8-bit connection speed as that would need a hardware upgrade to utilize.
so it will work with the full storage but only with the 4bit connection.
obviously a firmware update will be needed.
and this stick should come standard built in to the psp2, or something like it.
I'll buy a hundred, and then probably not use them, because I'm considerably richer than yeeoow.

Hard drive are rated as 1,000,000,000 bytes for 1GB
But in reality a computer sees it as 1,073,741,824 bytes for 1GB.
This applies to all storage devices Devices.
When you buy a 750GB hard drive you see 698.5GB in windows.
Are you going to go back to the store and complain your missing 50GB? NO, because thats what the hard drive manufactures did. Sony is following the "STANDARD" and Microsoft and every company in the world. Your getting 8,000,000,000 bytes on the memory stick and thats how it is.

That would be correct if we were not talking about a whole gigabyte. It is a misrepresentati on of data storage. very much like the old monitors used to be. They said 21" but in reality they were 19-20" same applies for HD. It would be better if they were listing it as bytes of sorage and not gigabytes.
So don't buy the "official Sony" mem stick. They're over priced retard sticks. I bought a regular Sandisk 1gb mem stick pro duo at Costco for TWENTY-SIX BUCKS! It works perfect.

Honestly, there's no reason Sony would release something to do that - piracy would increase a hundredfold. Portable systems require portable storage devices.

Although you're just trying to relate things, your example kind of... just sucks. You see, we're not talking about a 750 GB hard drive, that has so much storage you wouldn't even realize 50 GB is missing. But when you're trying to fit as much as you can for travel or whatever on a 1 giger, or 4 giger, you know when you're not getting the whole deal. Even a gig stick has something like 940 MB... that may not seem like a big deal, but if you only have 1 gig to start with and it chops off 60 MB, trust me there is always an extra video or some songs to go on it.

Go buy yourself a 8GB hard drive and you will find the same thing happens.
Its much more dramatic when you get to higher storage devices. Because when you buy a 160Gb hard drive, you get around 150GB.

Imagine someone who knows nothing and purchases a 750GB drive, they open up windows and see they only have 698.5GB. its a perfect example because when sony releases a Duo with more space, people will still complain about it.
Keep in mind PSPs aren't the only devices that uses Memory Sticks... So you can't use the PSP as a benchmark for its pricing.

I said that example sucks. It just does. There is a huge difference between a 6,000 TB hard drive and a 1 gig stick. You try to get as much as you can with a 1 gig because you don't have a lot. Do you think I'd give a ***** if my PSP could hold 600 GB when I bought a 650 GB harddrive? Or do you think I'd be more pissed if I had way less space to work with anyway and had to sacrifice ***** because taking 4-60 MB matters when you only have that much. The reason why Memory sticks cost a lot is because it's hard to fit a lot of memory on something so small like a Memory Stick Pro Duo. That's why it's expensive.
I paid $150.00 not including tax for a 1GB sandisk when I bought my PSP in April of last year... my how the prices have dropped.. Guess it's true.. you gotta PAY to PLAY
The people here complaining about the price of this 8GB memory stick either just recently bought a PSP or have the worst short term memory.
Don't you remember when 1GB sticks were released? Or when 2GB sticks were new? How about when 4GB sticks were let loose? THEY WERE ALL EXPENSIVE!
I bought my 2GB memory stick around 4 months after they were released and I paid $130 for it. Haven't kept up with prices on them but I wouldn't doubt if you could buy one now for around $50. They will start off expensive till they get enough shipments out or till demand for them starts to drop. That's how things work.
Also, 8GB memory sticks aren't exactly meant for the PSP. While it can most deffinately use the memory stick, and Sony is counting on that, it can also be used on other Sony products that except Pro Duo sticks or PRO sticks with the adapter.
uhh the 4 gb is now at 80 bucks..i garantee by the middle of the year..or untill christmas..that the 8gb price will drop dramatically

Yay a 8 gb memory stick just buy 2 4gbs for 160 dollars and have one for movies and one for games. 4 2gbs would be even cheaper. Sony wants more money, so they trick you into thinking the conveniency or 2 4gbs in one is worth 40 dollars! Once 16gb comes out 2 8gbs wil be less than 16gb. Inside the PSP card slot Its just blinks and blinks and blinks and blinks! Is there a way to set this *****cing thing? Oh and to all thos who say, "just take it back and get another one", WELL....... You all know that you are buying into Sonys plan when you buy any memory stick, those ******* things only cost 25 cents to make, sony sells them for hundreds because they know rich as$holes will go out and buy them. Then, 2 weeks later they release another one for the consumers to choke on. Sony is going to increase the gig levels by increments of 2 or 4 until greedy impatent dumba$ses quit paying for them.
