Just Cause Dev Says PS4 Will "Out-Power Most PCs for Years" |

Linus Blomberg, Chief Technical Officer for Avalanche Studios, really, really likes what he's seen of the PS4. So much so that he's out there extolling its virtues and comparing it to PCs.
"The consoles desperately need a boost since having been overtaken in terms of performance by PCs several years ago, and also losing market share to mobile platforms," he told Gaming Bolt. "I'm glad Sony decided to go with 8GB RAM because it means that the PS4 will out-power most PCs for years to come."
He also likes the PS4's scaleable architecture, saying, "The off-the-shelf philosophy behind the architecture makes sense from a pricing and heating point of view, but it also means that Sony more easily can make incremental improvements of their system. If that's actually their plan I don't know, but it could help prevent the inevitable loss of market shares that the long console cycle entails."
Blomberg also goes on about the PS4 as a social platform, stating, "The PS4 will not only be a very powerful gaming machine from a hardware perspective, but it will also be a social tool and integrated marketplace more akin to the successful mobile devices. It's the best of all worlds in a way; great performance for demanding high-end gaming, good social ecosystem and connectivity, and integrated business marketplace.
"For Avalanche Studios as an open-world games developer this is super exciting and opens up many new opportunities. It's a perfect fit for the types of games we do, and we are confident that we'll bring open-world gaming to a whole new level because of it."

Because of this, in spite of their consistently lower performance potential, the developers can max out the system and deliver a comparable end product.
Another bonus of this setup is that the gaming experience is uniform for all players. Ask a player with a top of the line box about a game, and then ask another who's gaming PC is two or three years old about the same title. The product they describe and the gaming experience they receive will be roughly similar at best, often times the two descriptions will not even sound like they are for the same product.
The main benefit PC players have over consoles is the consistently lower cost of the games themselves. However, these savings will be offset by the cost of the initial hardware purchase and scaling hardware to keep up the box up to date enough to play newer games.
Boil it down to one point - consoles will always deliver a more consistent and more affordable experience for both developers and consumers.

But, consoles do provide longer-term, more stable experiences. So to each his own.
