As time goes by, it seems as if there’s been an increased emphasis on digital versions of games.  This is great if you enjoy digital downloads, but what if you prefer physical discs?  Don’t worry, Sony fans, the company says the PS4 will have a disc-based future.

Jim Ryan, CEO and president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, said that the PS4 will be primarily disc-based despite the big trend towards digital downloads.  “Clearly, and this applies not just to games but to pretty much every form of entertainment, there is a trend to increased digital consumption, and that is happening now on PS3 and will continue and will probably accelerate on PS4," Ryan told IGN. "But the primary delivery mechanism for the big games on the PS4 platform will continue to be Blu-Ray discs, for the foreseeable future.”

Ryan cited the size of some PS4 games as a major reason for using discs, noting that downloading certain games in some parts of the world would be unrealistic.  “If you go down to Southern Europe, where we have very big and important businesses, it can take you 3 days over a standard internet connection to download a file of the size, and that’s not fun. There are certain gating factors in terms of internet infrastructure that mandate that the disc-based solution is going to be the primary delivery mechanism for the foreseeable future.”

As for how long the “foreseeable future” is, Ryan said you can still count on seeing discs for at least five more years.

Same. While the "free" games as part of PS+ are nice, they have filled my 250GB drive stupidly fast. I have to delete stuff I don't play! Thankfully I now have unlimited fibre broadband but still, having to download every game would be a pain.

That is not the issue here, why do PR idiots insist on treating people like idiots. Are they resalable Does the consumer retain the same fair use property rights we would with other products. Also how about Content that ships with the game on the disk yea lets make it part of game certification that they can not charge a consumer twice for the same product that is a black mark on capcom and others.

I don't like the idea of all-digital because i prefer to wait til games drop in price to the $20-$30 range. Since there is no shelf space to constantly turn over in a digital format, there is no incentive for digital pricing to drop anywhere near the same rate as it does for physical copies.
