Rumor Mill: Sony’s Super Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros. originally launched on the Nintendo 64, and was an instant classic. Nintendo fans immediately felt a connection to the familiar characters, and the simple but precise fighting mechanics turned the game into a massive success. The follow-up game, Super Smash Bros. Melee, later came out on GameCube and was probably the best iteration of the franchise, though the Wii’s Brawl is still looked upon in a positive light despite the unjust nerfing of Fox into oblivion.

All things considered, the Super Smash Bros. game system is a brilliant moneymaker: take familiar characters and make them fight. The end. So it’s no surprise that Nintendo’s competitors would want to get in on the action, and recent information indicates that Sony is doing just that.

Here’s what we know:

We know that a game, codenamed Title Fight, is in development at SuperBot Entertainment. We also vaguely know that the game involves several of Sony’s most famous characters, including Uncharted’s Nathan Drake, Twisted Metal’s Sweet Tooth and God of War’s Kratos. Also – Parappa the Rappa.

Various game websites have conducted investigations, turning up screenshots from the game, pictures of arcade joysticks and a tweet from SuperBot’s Chris Molina indicating that the new Sony commercials featuring a collection of familiar characters was “foreshadowing” his studio’s game.

There’s a full interview up at Paul Gale Network that basically lays the entire game out on a platter, so it’s unclear exactly how much of this is “rumor” and how much is “information.” For now, it definitely looks like Sony is cooking up a Super Smash Bros.-type game.

Do you think it’s possible for another developer to capitalize on the success of the Smash Bros. franchise?

If they manage to create a decent core fighting system, then yes, I think that they could capitalize on this Smash brothers thing.

I just hope that it isn't a 2D fighter, nothing wrong with 2D fighters but I just don't like them.

Now... I would love to see an RPG / Adventure game with all kinds of Playstation characters ( both new and classic )... sort of like how KingdomHearts mixed up FinalFantasy and Disney...

It's possible that this might work, but you have to keep in mind that the genius behind Smash Bros. is that it's super, super simple to pick up and play. There's no quarter-circles, or full rotations of sticks required to throw even the most basic of moves.

There's no complexity to the controls (relatively speaking) at all.

This is why a game like Street Fighter can't be played by most people at any kind of competitive level outside their own house. Most people can't be assed to learn the proper timing, nor the complicated hand motions required for even moderate level play.

You basically have to hit one target or another. Either you aim for the hardcore fighting fan, who digs on SF level of complex play, or you go for the Smash Bros. school of easy to play with surprisingly deep mechanics. Both are a challenge.

Mortal Kombat, I think, hit the middle pretty well. It's surprisingly easy to pick up, most of the moves are really easy to pull off, and it still provides a deep enough system that if you were to go online now, you'd more likely than not, get your ass handed to you in a matter of seconds.

If I'm thinking of the same game, why would you suggest that it wasn't awesome? It had Simon Belmont and Solid Snake as well. Besides, I doubt that many people know about that one since it never came out of Japan.

I sincerely hope this is a 2D or 2.5D fighting game, not a big fan of 3D type plus Super Smash Bros is around 2D-type.

3D type would make it seem like a DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi game. Which is great too.

So it could work either way.

I see it as a fail. idc who you are, Super Smash Bros. works out because it's cartoony and awesome. Sony is going to go all gore and crap and it'll end up like some Mortal Kombat rehash. The idea would be good, but the characters won't fit.

If crash bandicoot isn't in this game i'll be severely pissed.

If Square returns to its pre-Enix time and teams with DreamFactory again, then "God Bless The Ring." ;-) I've always wanted a sequel.
