PS3 to come out at $ 500? |
Listed in: Rumors, News Tags: playstation rumors, ps3 news, ps3 updates
Analysts and developers told CNN Money on Wednesday that Sony's Playstation 3 will likely price at 9. The prediction is in line with a Nov. 2 Merrill Lynch report that estimates the PS3 hardware to cost $ 495 to manufacture. Sony has yet to make an official announcement on price or the release date of the Playstation 3 successor.
The system was a no-show at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and the company has backed away from its spring 2006 release date on press releases. A $ 499 price point would be an all-time high for the Playstation brand, which has sold at launch for 9 since its debut in 1995.The culprit for the pricey hardware lies in the PS3's complex CELL processor and its Blu-ray Disc drive that will play high-definition media.
The $ 499 is not the only price point that analysts and developers suggest. Several say that the cost could reach $ 600 - $ 700, while others believe that the electronics giant will match the Xbox 360's premium price of $ 399.

ps3 price, well, it's going to be expensive... i think we can agree on that, but we know it'll also be worth it!

the fans of 360 weren't happy about that article. It makes some valid points but also assumes 100% of what sony promises will come to pass. it seems to me a lot of people are missing a very salient point about the 360 vs ps3, and that's the games themselves.
in the ps2 generation xbox lost to ps2 because of the software, the games on ps2 were a lot better. i know that's why i chose ps2; and i have a feeling it's going to be the same this time around... you only have to look at the 360's current 'top sellers'- in my opinion they're boring and just pants. ps2 has such delights as ico, katamari, rez, ffx, mgs3... the titles on ps2 are better and i can't see sony changing that philosophy.
location free sounds like fun though

If we, just for the sake of the argument, play along and assume that the 'developers' and 'analysts' are on the money, then this has some implications.
both ends of the market.
2. The actual cost doesn't necessarily have a lot to do with the actual price. Normally, however, we would expect the actual price to be below the cost, as these consoles are as much like Senseo Machines to coffee pads as HP Printers to cartridges. So if the cost were truly 500 USD, the PS3 would be able to match the current xbox price-point.

3. Since the PS3 should really be expected to cost more, another possibility is that prices of hardware are expected to be significantly lower in the summer than they were at the launch of the 360.

1. The PS3 so far seems to have the more expensive components, vis-a-vis the Xbox. If the cost of the system is truly 500 bucks, then I assume the regular version does indeed ship without a harddrive. Of course, we could also just assume that the analysts don't really have a clue. The 360 is showing that the harddrive can be used well for downloads, but the GameCube is a good one for showing that cheap hardware also works (and the DS, for that matter). So the two system approach still does seem an option, that way it could compete better with

But which of these it will be, who knows? I expect we'll have to wait a little longer for definite answers. If I were Sony, I'd probably hold back such info as long as possible, because it is of great value to the likes of Microsoft and Nintendo.

meaning... "And when real console come out, the price is way lower than any of the predicted price." ...you would also fall into that category
