Texture Installation Coming to Black Ops 2 for PS3 |
Listed in: Previews Tags: Activision, call of duty, texture installation
When gamers across the globe think of the Call of Duty franchise, many different things come to mind. Maybe you think about fragging your friends, or that simple well-executed headshot that earned you supremacy in a heated deathmatch. Regardless of what conjures in that brain of yours, one thing is certain: you love playing that CoD for a quite extensive period of time. As girlfriends are lost and families are ruined, Activision looks to continue this trend by offering texture installation for their PS3 version.

This certainly isn't the first time we have seen a similar strategy employed in the shooter genre. After all, EA utilized the tactic to increase game performance in their own monstrously popular title known as Battlefield 3. However, unlike the option for that particular experience, CoD's lead designer states that installing these extra files on your PS3 hard drive won't exactly lead to any sort of smoother gameplay.
So why add the option then? According to studies of PS3 gamers, many in this demographic felt that past Call of Duty titles simply put too much strain on their system's Bluray drive, which in some cases caused the console to stop functioning. Obviously Activision wants the only casualties of their gameplay to be those of your enemies, so they took this information and easily solved the problem by adding this texture install feature. Once in place, you should be able to go straight for a gaming marathon without too much worry as to what will happen to that precious high def disc cradle of yours. I can't speak for the other parts of the hardware in terms of safety, but at the very least the developers seem keen to solve any drive issues. Game on, because duty will be calling for you in the coming months.

With that in mind, Black Ops 2 will probably follow in the same footsteps.
