Waiting in line in anticipation for something, there is only so much you can do but think and speculate and chat with others around you. The chance of playing a game for the first time, your mind is swimming with possibilities and how reporting on it may adjust someones future perspectives on the title. Let's just start things off nice and friendly and say if you liked Soul Calibur IV you will love Soul Calibur V. The game looks fantastic and the controllers are smoother than ever, playing on both arcade and regular controllers. But let's talk more about the event and the game itself. While we wait in line let's talk about what was happening.
In Sydney there is a big cinema in the middle of the city called an Event Cinema. They have a special type of cinema inside called VMax, which while I don't know what it stands for, I could easily say, regardless of the letters, Very Awesome comes to mind. Namco and GameSpot Australia recently invited a large selection of gamers, tournament players and some of the press to an event in which to show off the brand new Soul Calibur V. The game itself handles incredibly well with both a joystick and joypad. While there were no PS3 controllers there, the 360 and arcade stick controllers do an incredible job of handling the swift moves with or without combined move sets (i.e. K+B, KG+BK, etc.).
Heading up stairs you see almost a hundred gamers already taking off bags and jackets and energetically sitting down to take control of the new game. With over 15 TV's setup in the whole area working on honing their skills for something...but what? Some people who I'd entered with were telling me that tonight was not just a play test for the fantastic game but what was really going on was more than that. It was a competition. A tournament. All to be played for and in a finale inside the VMax cinemas.
