I should say, from the outset, I am somewhat sceptical of any sentence that has the words 'Sony' and 'Network' in it (Google it if you don't follow me!).
That said, the Playstation Home--with it's re-design Sony is pushing out--on second look, does have a lot more Indie games than you would first imagine.
Once you dig down into the Playstation Home screen, you will find gems such as 'Cogs', a free to play multi-player game (a loved title on Steam and the iPhone/iPad platforms).
"A lot of developers start at Home" because "Home tends to be one of the easiest points of entry for content creation on PlayStation."said Jack Buser, director of Sony's PS3 social network.
"Home is all scripting (LUA), and all the 3D stuff is being done in Maya. So it's super-easy," Buser explained. "You can have teams of literally one person. Usually team sizes vary between 5-10 people. You can create a full-on game the scope of Sodium in six months. That's just not possible in traditional console development."
"We've had 23 million downloads of Home. It's a very active service, so the traffic is extremely high. And we just point that traffic to whatever game is featured at the time."
"We're a managed platform, we make sure that if you take the time to build a game on our platform, we tell people to go play that game."
"We can go to a developer and say 'we need a first person shooter built,' we'll just pay them outright to do it."
Playstation Home - A New Look
Sony appear very confident on the prospects for Indie developers and the future of Playstation Home as a developer framework.
Most games are released on Playstation Home a free to play, with add-ons and in-game content as a pay as you go model.
The Reboot of Sony's Playstation Home is well underway, with a new interface and additional features. Games such as 'Bootleggers' and 'Cogs' that are already positioned within home will stand to benefit the most.
