New Line Cinema. Home of Lord of The Rings, Nightmare on Elm Street and the Austin Powers trilogy, has recently picked up the rights from Midway Games, what game? Rampage, the classic monster mash. The game got you to pick from a bunch of oversized creatures to destroy buildings and in later versions, each other.
The game was an arcade classic and it's potential as a film is a Michael Bay explosion, destructy-cinema, extravaganza but it seems that the producers might have more in mind. The development of the monsters destroying cities genre, really hit a home run with the release of found footage flick Cloverfield and Korean Family Drama The Host, which if you haven't seen, you should find as soon as possible before it's possibly remade.
John Rickard who produced the recent Nightmare remake and Horrible Bosses is in discussions with writers to develop the project after they bought the rights. There are only two real ways to embrace this project. One is the previously mentioned all-out smashy crashy Bayhem filled story or really focus on previous monster movie mythology and make it as cheesy and involved in it's own storyline and video game premise as possible. This is a throwback to the 80's and arcades, why not make it set there and even have hints and references to those movies.
This could be good and this could be big, but New Line need to take care of the property in the way that fans and cult-film fans will enjoy it. Go silly and all out is my suggestion. Pirahna 3D did big box office last year based on that premise alone and let's just say I'll be seeing 3DD when it comes out next year.
