Sound Off: Hardest Game Ever Made? |
Listed in: Controller, Opinions & Analysis Tags: dark souls, ninja gaiden 2, super meat boy, vvvvvv
Last night, a friend and I played VVVVVV for the better part of two hours, pausing now and then to curse at each other via Steam. Neither one of us managed to make it very far – the game is just brutal, and I’m still trying to get the hang of the control scheme. But my repeated failures got me thinking about difficult games, and the satisfaction that comes from besting them.

We’ve seen a lot of talk about games like VVVVVV, Super Meat Boy and Dark Souls this year, but they’re only the latest in a long stream of incredibly difficult games. So I wanted to talk to you, the QJ community, and see what you believed to be the hardest games ever made.
Personally, my vote goes to Ninja Gaiden 2 on the NES. It was a beast from start to finish, and even with infinite continues, many gamers simply set it aside in frustration. Battletoads was another in a similar vein. I’m talking old-school, hardcore games that depended on trial, error, luck and skill.
It seems like every console generation has had at least one soul-crushing game – remember Altered Beast?
So sound off, QJ – what earns your vote as the hardest game ever made?

Problem is I can't remember if it was Master Blaster or Battletoads. For the life of my I just cannot remember between those two.

Master System - I was only little, and didn't have many games for it, so probably Sonic 2
Mega Drive - Gods. Hands down. Kicked my arse in ways previously unfathomable. Still a really good game though.
PlayStation - There aren't any that come to mind, where I haven't gone back to realise they weren't that hard after all. I'd probably go for the last few missions of Driver, or a no-junction FFVIII run.
PS2 - Again, nothing really stands out. Perhaps trying to finish all missions stealthily in SOCOM II, or adjusting to the PS2 controls of Deus Ex, after playing the PC version to death. Oh, and SotC hard mode time attack.
PS3 - MGS4 on "the Boss extreme" or Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising. Oh, and SotC hard mode time attack.
Xbox 360 - Limbo
PSP - Splinter Cell, simply because of the god-awful camera controls, and the finicky analog nub.
PC - Commandos 3: Destination Berlin.

Ninja Gaiden - nuff said
Battletoads - the stage where you ride the cycle. it's hard playing it on one player but try it while on 2 players. you'll literally try to smash the game or the tv due to frustration

More recently, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. I'm all for hard realism, but getting one-shotted by a guy with an AK-47 from a 1/4-mile away when you're hiding in tall grass is just cheap.
Another one that I think almost nobody played was Zoids Assault. It was absolutely punishing in the later levels.

X-Men - Once you beat Apocalypse, it literally becomes impossible to finish the next stage with certain characters (Gambit and Cyclops, I'm looking at you) because they are too tall to make some of the cramped jumps!
Zool - I don't remember much of this, because it wasn't especially good, but I do remember that the second level (music level) was insanely difficult.
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle - Just like every other Alex Kidd (ESPECIALLY "Miracle World"), it was the stuff of nightmares.
The Chaos Engine - Just really hard after a point.
