PoV: Yearly game sequels can be bad for everybody |

Yearly iterations of games are nothing new. Sports games, in particular, do them a lot. They mostly sell well, of course, but they have also ended up with gamers labelling them as quick cash ins with nothing more than updated player rosters and a little stat tweaking.
This practice become so popular, however, that yearly game sequels have pretty much become a staple of the gaming industry. Not a few gamers and even developers have voiced their complaints about it, but it looks like it won't be going away anytime soon. That's something that former Ubisoft man and current LucasArts creative director Clint Hocking laments.
In an opinion piece published in Edge, the Splinter Cell and Far Cry 2 dev warned that not only is the industry actively helping to bore gamers with yearly sequels, it's also undermining the creative well-being of developers. As far as Hocking is concerned, the easy revenue generated by sequels does not make up for the "long-term costs to the creative well-being of our workforce and the risk it places on our pipeline and workflow development, and on the skills we nurture and develop and will then need to leverage in making future games and (hopefully) new brands and franchises."
We've heard Battlefield 3 producer Patrick Bach say something similar, and I agree with both of them. Not only does a little extra development time let the developers make a sequel tighter and better, it also gives fans a chance to look forward to something new. The problem, I believe, lies mainly in the fact that publishers regard gamers as an exploitable resource that can easily be enticed with quick releases as long as they have an established brand name on the cover. That belief rings all to true, but the demise of the Guitar Hero franchise (no matter how temporary it is) will hopefully convince the entire industry -- developers, publishers, and gamers alike -- that these practices can be detrimental to all of us.
Of course, I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for that to happen. I may be idealistic, but I'm not that stupid.

Also it clearly said sports games.
Though some consider CoD to be a sport, similar to fishing.

Its usually crappy pop titles that do that anyway, like transformer movies, so it never really effects me either way.
The kids seem to like them.
