Zipper Interactive: Exclusives give hardware its identity

Zipper Interactive lead designer Travis Steiner recently spoke about what types of games give a console its identity.

"Exclusives are what give the hardware their identity. It's the brands, right? Ultimately hardware is important, but the hardware developers and the brands - PlayStation, or the other ones - are really defined by the exclusive titles," Steiner said. "Without that, everything would be lost in a sea of... being generic, if you will."

"I also think that multi-platform games sometimes have to make sacrifices to work for either platform, whereas we have the advantage of knowing the target hardware we're making the game for," he finished. "In the end result, you get better quality by making it specifically for one piece of hardware."

Exclusives are definitely essential for any game console. Without them, what would the point of purchasing one system over another be?

This is why i just now got a ps3 for 30$, to play the very few left exclusives, play all i ever wanted on the cheaper/better xbox360, now i get to go back and play some old exclusives i've wanted to try.

Key Example a new final fantasy exclusive to the ps3 would have made me buy one right off the bat.

This is why I have both : PS3 for exclusives and online cause they're worth it and Xbox360 to play every crappy multiplatform game which has been developed on this console (backups).
